Set up an appointment for the scene at predetermined intervals. Say once or twice a month, return to the exact same vantage point and shoot with the same camera and lens each time.

Bjørn - yes, pretty much like that, but in my case the subject is an entire hillside of trees, and incl. quite a few different species. So all that variety and extra information will work to my advantage, possibly.
