I have experience with the 17-35/2.8 and the 14-24/2.8, used on D3(12mp) and D800(36mp). The 14-24 is superior at reproducing small details at matched apertures and focal lengths, especially if one plans to use the outer 1/3 or outer edge of the FX frame. Also, the 14-24 has what is considered less complex distortion. Lightroom/ACR corrects the 14-24 distortion better than it does the distortion of the 17-35.
Also, a lot depends on the size of reproduction that is planned.
For larger reproduction, I'd prefer the 14-24 to any AiS-era prime (in that range) that I have experience with.
With a small reproduction of 4 inches/10cm, almost any functioning lens will work.
