Minis are rather 'maxi' these days compared to the one (Mini Cooper) I drove in the early '70s.

the sunroof in your pic seems to be bigger than the Union Jack we
obligatory had to  paint on our mini´s as roof design in the seventies
in these times I had twice the honour to sit on a battered Union Jack

The 'mandatory' UK flag painted on a genuine Mini Cooper .... Certainly makes the little car highly assertive.

I couldn't more agree.  My sister used to have the 70's mini.  With the size - probably due to dozens of security regulations - for sure, a better and safer car, but with the size, most of the charm is gone ...

I still remember the excitement of taken my beefed-up Mini Cooper out for a nightly spin on slippery roads after heavy snowfalls. Once the Finnish-style 'see-saw' driving technique for bends was mastered,  you could propel these small cars extremely fast even under the worst road conditions.

Build quality of these cars, however, was 'British' with what that entailed at the time. Thus maintenance issues and rust killed the car after a few years. In this respect I assume the humongous 'Minis' of today are vastly better.

Where I driving a Mini Cooper-S on Los Angeles freeways I'd feel like I was sitting in a trash can at the curb naked wondering how to get into the house without being seen.

No wonder - the new mini is effectively a Beemer sportscar under the skin.  Not that it is a bad thing at all -  it is that it is just now more European than British I feel.

I understand that the new shape BMW Mini Cooper is scarily fast! But I'm not and never have been a driver only a nail biting passenger.

Sir Alec Issigonis, the British car designer and engineer who created the Morris Minor and the Mini, was a first cousin once removed of BMW's CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder (1993-1999) which was regarded as the reason why BMW purchased the Rover Group so Pischetsrieder could get his hands on the Mini brand.
