General rehearsal -image heavy-
« on: August 18, 2016, 06:40:52 »
Last part of a three movement:

 Movement and image -creation-

Around the stage -backstage images-

Here are some takes from the general rehearsal of the show. Modern dancers from a professional company mixed with some advance students. This is the outcome of the previous working weeks plus two pieces of the repertoire of the company.

I have just recently change the raw format to 14bits. I know... It looks like it gives some extra room for post-processing high iso images of the already very malleable d750 files.

Some of the shots are not sharp, the combination of 1/100 to 1/160th of a second shutter with action and a light stand as a tripod. I wasn't suppose to be doing this part, was not ready, a promised tripod never made it and so I have to improvise.

Hmm,
they loose against your BW shots.
The color does not bring anything but is very muted, giving me a half cooked feeling.

cheers

Paco, unfortunately, I would have to agree with Andreas.  #4 and 6 in the first batch could be great if only the part of the leg and the tip of the foot had not been cut.

I know it is a challenging requirement, as the dancers move fast and dynamically.  But, based on your excellent works, I, for one, would dare to say so.

I disagree about the colour.  I much prefer the colour images because I think that in this context B&W is a signal that these images are about Art, and I find that contrived, and also at odds with the composition.

I don't mind the unsharpness.  It is nearer what a spectator sees on a stage, and unless your idea is to emphasise the sweaty reality a spectator does not see I don't see why sharpness would be good.

Thank you all again for taking the time to give your sincere opinion.
I usually work rehearsals in bw and shows in color. Just a personal choice. Lights were as you see plus dime and uneven...not perfect. This is not an excuse but food for thought as the good ones also depend in a great measure of the work of the light designer.
Sharpness, focus, etc... are not a priority per se even thou I look for them as much a possible. Not always, of course. Same about fidelity with what an audience sees. I don´t consider my work to give an accurate representation but a bias one, personal, filtered and then processed -postprocessed :) - I´m looking for catching emotions and magic as they happen; if that means fidelity so be it but also the opposite is true as many times.

   I´ll keep trying

  Thanks!

I really like the tight framing but I feel that most of the images are mostly a bit too blurry or soft looking due to movement and dark exposures. I would rate the importance of sharpness and focus much higher.

Sure depth of field can be small or thin - but it is usually preferable to have some areas, eyes or contours sharp.
