Interesting sequence - as individual images, I think #1 is the most successful.

I think every landscape photographer has experienced the following, perhaps many times -
1. Excellent weather forecast.
2. Gets up very early and goes to favourite location.
3. Dawn sky is clear but with hints of cloud formation.
4. A few minutes before sunup, a bank of cloud suddenly covers most of the sky.
5. Sun rises on schedule but is quickly hidden behind the wall of cloud.
6. Stays that way all day.

Dave, thanks for your insightful comment. 

Fortunately, my place allow me to run up to the 6th floor using an emergency stairs whenever I want.  So far as this particular viewpoint is concerned, I can avoid the sad situation described by you so humorously. 

It is interesting that you say #1 is the most successful.  In fact, the sun was overexposed, which I regret.  I compensated the exposure by a couple of stops for #2 and later, and am pretty happy with the exposure.  My personal favorite as a single image is #2.

I just realized that the first four images suffered from the red ghosts which were probably caused by the protection filter.  Coward me!

My reason for preferring #1 is that I like the under-lit cloud, and a second, less important reason - the foreground buildings have just a hint more detail (at least, on my monitor).

Dave, you look at my images in a much more comprehensive way than I do.

I was attracted by the gap between the end of the cityscapes and the clouds which is just as wide as the diameter of the rising sun.  Thus I processed the image for the gap lit by the sun.  I wanted the foreground showing the details only slightly to guide the eyes of the viewer.
