Hello, Roland. I have an early 43-86 with an Ai ring. i tried putting that into the 43-86 C version and it just would not work and I risked cross threading the Ai ring. it looks like the tolerances inside are not the same. I overhauled them both and the mechanism that holds the pin from the aperutre ring is a bit different. :o :o :o (actually, there are many improvements mechanically in the C version, i will show them in a future article)

Interesting ... according to the AI conversion charts from Nikon, the same three AI rings are for all 43-86mm lenses from 438601 - 774070 which covers all the early types. It only changes when you get to the New Nikkor/K version at 774071.

I will check that. I think mine might be the K version because it has a black front.  :o :o :o
I was intending to salvage the aperture ring and sell the donor lens  ::)

OK, the aperture ring transplant is a success. The internals looked the same as far as I can see :o :o :o
i did not open the Ai one, just peeked inside. ::)

Yes, definitely the 6-element version here, in pre-AI and AI mounts.

The AI lens on the left is the newer 5-element version, with the 6-element version on the right.

The newer lens is a little longer and the DOF scale is level with the focus ring, not under it as with the 6-element version.

Also notice the focus scales, the newer has a much shorter focus throw, the first distance after infinity is 2m, compared to 5m for the older lens.
