Field of dandelions
« on: May 27, 2016, 02:17:37 »
Because powerful weed killers are banned in Ontario, Dandelions grow everywhere, and there is a large field beside a highway near our home that is covered in them.
To shoot them I used a camera and lens I hadn't picked up in at least five or six years, and finished a roll that was in it.
The photos are surprisingly grainy and had a strange colour cast possibly due to heat damage, but I liked the compositions enough to post this one anyway.
Nikon N65
Sigma 12~24 4.5-5.6 autofocus
Fuji 100 ISO colour slide
f16 @ 1/125th
I shoot with film. That's film. F...i...l...m. You remember film. It was in all the papers.

I like the colour cast. It somehow fits this enormous field of dandelions.
Quite amazing to see so many.

Do I see a graduated filter at work here?

The result is very interesting. An old friend of mine is specialized in buying film intentionally that is way past
Its best before date to use that film as an unpredictable filter.

This is a really nice image. Would have loved to be there and snap a few...

Massive amounts of dandelions in a meadow is a sign of fertilisers, not lack of weed killers.

I like the overall warm tone and composition here. I agree that this picture was not affected by the degradation of the film. These fields are hard to drive by without stopping to take a picture:)

Thanks all for commenting.
Frank,
The lens was unfiltered, but tends to vignette at the corners so it almost appears that a grad was used.
Bjorn,
Except for mowing, the Town of Markham who administers all local public properties such as this field does not tend them in any other way, and because of a Provincial government ban on effective Pesticides, they are all overgrown with Dandelions, and many other weed types. With the exception of Golf Courses, it is virtually impossible to find tracts of land where I live not covered in them.
