Even as a native, it took me a moment to find the right spelling ,-)

I will be honest with you. I think this shot might be stronger. Proper separation of subjects is important in this kind of shots, especially regarding the main subject.  The fact that the guy has two hats and some spare limbs is a bit unfortunate. By moving two steps to the right and taking a lower position you could separate him, place him on a nicer dark background with his hat on a contrasting bkgd of the roof, add a bit of more dramatic perspective and also reveal the other guy.  It could have made the shot stronger.

I absolutely agree.
Typically I would go down on my knees to reduce the effect of my 2m..

But I had to shoot over the crowd and could not move as freely as I wanted.
I have other shots with main actors more isolated from each other, but the feel less appealing to me as the background becomes even more prominent.

I'm always looking for optical drama ... I would have tried using a longer lens and shoot tight, trying to get the whip crossing the face, the maybe low and wide shooting up. Then going long again and attempt to capture selective expressions of the children (fingers in the ears of the first image). But, it is always easy to make suggestions from the comfort of my chair as opposed to being confined by by the actual situation and equipment at hand.
