If the price is very tempting (say, $200-250), and condition of the lens is OK or even better, you may get it, cose cleaning shouldn't be that much, $50-75.
Currently, in the Los Angeles area, a routine C.L.A job on a Nikon Ai/AiS-era CRC lens is $150.

Just curious, Keith, where do you take your lenses to have this work done her in Los Angeles?

It appears as though the Nikon service and repair center moved from El Segundo up to San Vicente & Wilshire Blvds.

I cannot currently recommend a lens service place in L.A., as my most recent place,  that was close to where I live, did a bad job the last time.  PM me if you want to avoid that one.  My last contact with them was about 1 year ago.
In the distant past (like 10-15 years), International Camera in Pasadena and Authorized Camera Service (ACS) in Woodland Hills were good.  I may return to ACS next time.  I have used Nikon's service in  L.A., but only for recent AF bodies/lenses.  I keep intending to ask the Nikon facility IF they service old Ai lenses.  I've got a backlog of 3 or 4 Ai type lenses that could use a CLA job.
