Wild flowers on the mountains of Crete
« on: March 30, 2016, 20:31:02 »
I was for 3 days on the mountains and gorges of Crete trying to photograph birds. I could not resist the wild flowers, some of them tiny,
coming out between rocks. Please, feel free to comment

Thank you Bjorn. Crete is a very interesting island. The western half of the island is mountainous, wild, wildly beautiful and supports a healthy populaton of vultures. there are numerous gorges. The most famous is the gorge of Samaria, which opens for crossing in May.

It certainly looks like the flowers are worth the trip. Very nice pictures! Would love to see the vultures as well.

I like the one with the rocks ... the texture and weight contrast.

Crete could be an idea for an NG get together in April 2017?

I, for one, am in head over heels. I dont know if they are other Greek NG members.
Thank you all for your comments, and I am adding some more photos.

Some of the flowers look pretty familiar ... I probably won't be required to haul around the 5-tome, 6 kg heavy, version of Flora Europaea to navigate the flower fields of Crete :D

Tristin, thanks for your comments, Bjorn, dont worry about the names of the flowers, just enjoy shooting them and then feel happy looking at them. On second thought, I might be wrong. Maybe you must know the names, isnt it part of your academic studies?

When I shoot flowers for documentation purposes, I obviously need to learn the name. Usually I capture the flower in UV at the same time.

However, being trained as a botanist, it is hard not to try to identify the species in any case. Even when the photograph in question turns out to be quite abstract. That is how my mindset works. I have this urge for insights.
