The Sid, cool sequences .  I have not used the new 300 f4 vr so do not know how it holds up at distance.  My 300 2.8 holds up better than the 300 f afs.  I only use the TC 2.0 III on the 300 2.8. I've tried it on other lenses but not happy.  I prefer the TC1.4 and 1.7 on other lenses. 

I am interested in the D500 for birding and sports... we shall see.

I find the bird vs bird encounters a lot of fun to watch and photograph but normally the distances are pretty long.  Lots of Kite vs Eagles, Harriers vs Eagles , Eagle vs Eagle and of course the Indian Crows chase everything

The more you shoot the better you will get

Tom, thank you for your comments and the very nice photo you posted. The 300/2.8 will always be better for birding than the 300/4. The  TC 20E III was produced with the current AFS 300/2.8 VR II in mind. Supposedly this is the best match.
D500: On paper seems an excellent camera for wildlife. I have not ordered one. I will wait for the first reviews. As for the 500mm prime, I will buy it when I win the lottery. I might get the new 200-500mm (not decided yet).

I'm in the same holding pattern on the D500.  Several of my bird/wildlife shooting friends have ordered so I will wait.  They've all had the same basic progression from D200 to D300(s) to D7100 as I have.  I bought my son the 80-400 afs which we are very happy with so not tempted by the 200-500mm.   I am shooting my 500vr much less these days.  Getting the 500vr, tripod, foldup seat out and then no birds is getting to be too much hassle  .
