Low rider loon with chick on board
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:58:04 »
This pair was imaged in Northern Michigan.  From birth until about 2 weeks of age, the chicks spend a significant amount of time on the parents back to stay warm and protect themselves from predation (snapping turtles and pike mainly).  This chick is about done with the free rides!  The adults can adjust their buoyancy to ride at different heights, which makes it easier for them to feed the chicks, and let them climb onto the bus.

D4  600VR  TC14EII  f/5.6  1/800s  ISO 800  .  Shot from my little boat.

The orange color comes from a boat house in the background.

Advice and comments always appreciated.

Cheers

Randy

Randy, superb image.  Perspective is the key.  Shooting that combo from your 'little' boat really works .
Many thanks for posting.

WOW!!!
I am not really into birds, but this is magical.
How smooth and crisp, the tones, and the color transitions. Well done!

Ok... I'm on the dark side...

Nice photo indeed, but I'd prefer a tad more of DOF so the small could be more on focus... otherwise great.
