Infrared Monkey Business
« on: December 02, 2015, 14:52:41 »
Back in 2013 Erik came to visit me in The Hague and we went on trip to Apenheul to shoot monkeys.
Looking at these photos now from a distance, the first question that popped up in my mind was: why did I decide to shoot in IR?

To get the nice burnt orange hues in the grass?

As it turns out, of course, it was somewhat of a mistake because the monkeys themselves don't radiate/emission a lot of IR if any at all, and since they are situated on grass that does radiate/emission loads of IR, you end up with an underexposed monkey if you want the surroundings to be exposed properly, or the other way around.

IR photography is about reflected radiation ('light'), not emitted heat which is the domain of thermography.

The image of the gorilla is stunning Jakov!  The contrast of the sweetness of the gorilla's expression and the gorilla's naturally powerful physique is really nice to look at.

Thank you Tristan for your nice words.
I often visit that monkey paradise in Apenheul and it always fascinates me when I see how their expressions are humanlike :)
