D800 and 128GB SD cards?
« on: August 12, 2015, 04:46:54 »
Hello,
Except for the very beginning in 2000 I have been using almost exclusively SanDisk CF and SD cards.
Lexar currently has interesting deals on high capacity cards and I plan to extend my shooting capacity of the D800 (currently w a 64GB SD and 32GB CF card).
I haven't been able to find consistent information on performance or issues of 128GB SD 1000x cards on the D8xx.
If available I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

Consider the Samsung pro cards too. Very good price performance relation.

Never considered high capacity cards on my D800/810, and in fact in any of my cameras.
Just because of Murphy's law... "when something has to be wrong, it will...", and the bigger the card the bigger the loss...

Have run Lexar and SandDisk but too many issues with Delkin ones.

The probability of card loss or damage increases if you need to handle several (smaller)cards in the field. I use primarily one pair of 64GB cards and with dual card writing the probability of data loss is low.

Just out of curiosity, why would like to use 128GB cards?

If I remember correctly my D800E needed 1GB for 20 14 bit NEF's that totals to 2500+ images on a 128GB card :o
Cheers,

D800E with 32G card nets me about 400 files(at 14bit).
Obviously this depends on the scene, but as a rough approximate go with figures that loo like that.

I also agree too tho, 1600files is probably a bit much on the one storage device.

The other angle to look at this tho, is if you do a lot of video.
My predominant capture type is stills, and have only done one session of video once(as a favour).
I have a 32G SD card simply for that purpose(if the need ever arises!) and it's other main purpose is really as the spare card, or backup card if the primary CF card fails for any reason.

But if you do lots of video, then such a large CF card can make sense.
