Nikkor 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 for IR
« on: February 24, 2021, 04:02:24 »
Am looking at options for small zoom lens primarily for IR use. From Birna's site review, this was rated as 4 which looks really good. Has anyone tried it for IR? Will be using a IR converted D200 (720nm).

From previous posts, the 35-105 afd is also an excellent choice but i cant find a sample for sale yet.

Thank you
Keep shooting,
Bern

I sense this topic needs a "dither fish" so I'll be that dither fish...

I own two copies each of the AF-D 28-70/3.5-4.5 and AF-D 35-105/3.5-4.5 but unfortunately I have no experience with them and IR.

These lenses were both kit lenses. Some may have had rough treatment. Sometimes mishaps don't leave obvious signs. I think I bought three of the 28-70(s) and returned one due to de-centering or misalignment so I recommend testing quickly during any return grace period. I fumbled my AF-D 35-70/2.8 while it was in an under padded Kodak Instant Camera bag. Later I found I had image smearing in the upper left quadrant that persists until about f/5.6~f/6.3. The lens looks mint though it best use is a paperweight.

The price I paid ranged from $80.00 to $105.00 (USD). I use protection filters on some lenses and not on others. Given the price paid I figured it didn't make senses to buy expensive filters and buying a second copy made more. I use a Nikon HN-3 aluminum lens hood on each and a Tupperware #G tumbler cap as a lens hood. The Tupperware caps were recommended by the Nikon School long ago.

I hope soon those with IR experience with these lenses come out from hiding.  :D

18-70mm has serve me well with a modified D200. Plenty of examples with that and other lenses here: https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=6085.30

The 18-70 was, and still is, a good match to the D200 for IR. The small 28-70 would likewise suit the D200 well.

Thank you for your replies. I will consider looking for a Nikon 18-70mm lens. I gave my copy of that lens to my sister before getting started on IR.

Pulled the trigger on a used 28-70 f3.5 - 4.5   ;D ;D ;D
Initial test shots shows some potential. No nasty hot spots appearing when using the smallest f-stop.  Hopefully will be able to do some more extensive testing soon
Keep shooting,
