Photoninja 1.4.0d
« on: January 25, 2022, 10:46:20 »
I downloaded Photoninja latest version, to my surprise it doesnt support the Z6, it works on the Zfc but not great.

Hi Fons,

1) The Z6 (and probably Zfc) can emit lossless compressed, lossy compressed, and uncompressed NEF variants.  With V1.4.0d, I find the following behavior:
  * Lossless compressed NEFs from the Z6 decompress and display correctly
  * Lossy compressed NEFs decompress but show a magenta cast (probably a black point or white point issue; I haven't looked closely)
  * Uncompressed NEFs decompress incorrectly

So, one workaround is to shoot lossless decompressed.  Another possibility is to convert to DNG (for instance, using Adobe's free DNG converter); Photo Ninja should be able to process the DNG regardless of the format of the original NEF.

2) V1.4.0d doesn't include a built-in color profile for the Zfc, so even the lossless compressed files don't look quite right.   I've attached a profile to this email.  Save it to disk, start Photo Ninja, go to Image->Manage Profiles.., click on "Install profiles...", then navigate to the profile.  After you install the profile, it should be applied automatically if you open a Zfc image.  (I only have lossless compressed samples for the Zfc, and they look fine with the profile installed.  I presume the lossy compressed and uncompressed files will yield the same behavior as for the Z6.)

3) I currently expect support for the lossy compressed and uncompressed formats to be addressed in V1.4.1.

Jim Christian

Dear Photoninja

To my surprise after purchasing,  downloading the latest version 1.4.0d, found out that the cameras Nikon Z6 and Zfc were not supported yet.
Can you tell me when support will be available or what workaround maybe applied, the z6 files are completely unworkable the Zfc will convert but with a definite colourcast.
Thank you

Photo Ninja was a great raw convertor when it first came out.

Sadly, the promised update never emerged. I have moved on.

PN still is among the selected very few that can properly deal with my UV images. So kept it as my standard workhorse. It runs on Windows and Linux too.

No more overabundance of reds and cyans, apparently. I have to test some of my own Z fc files.

For example a conversion from photoshop, flat auto profile. Photoshop ignores distortion corrections unless adressed within the camera.
