I  performed similar surgery on a D1x many years ago to  no avail.

Was very interesting, explaining precisely what I suspected about not exerting excessive force to unscrew the eyepiece cover lens and rubber surround, my rubber part seems to be missing.  Øivind explained the solution which is logical really, close the shutter, sealing the aperture and the eyepiece unscrews easily.  I only read the manual as a last resort, when all else has failed.

I was on tenterhooks that he would knock the (uncapped) bottle of IPA over, which he almost did at one point...   I was actually shouting at the screen at one point but he didn't seem to hear me! LOL
