The Dwarf Daffodils outside got a cold surprise yesterday ... They didn't seem to be troubled too much by the snowfall, likely because the ambient temperature didn't drop far below freezing.
Olympus E-M1.2 (not a favourite, but used in an underwater housing for my current aquatic macrophyte project) with the ultrawide Laowa 7.5mm f/2 (110 degrees, focus to 12 cm, as most Laowa designs amazingly sharp at least in the centre of the frame. I am replacing an Olympus 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye which I never took fancy to, with the Laowa for this season's shooting. Tests so far strengthen my belief this replacement was a prudent decision)

My 40cm Novoflex 'Fernobjektiv' set up and ready to be deployed .... I could never get anything remotely stable using the Pistol Grip section, so set the system up using alternate parts I already had at my disposal. The PN-11 extension ring at the end of the PB-4 bellows gives a better near limit and one avoids extending the bellows device to its full extent. As the front head of the Novoflex ends in 48mm threads, it was a breeze to incorporate a Baader U filter at its rear end, and link together the lens and the required F mount for the bellows unit. The CPU at the very end allows full EXIF data to be recorded. Admittedly a little bit of extravagance but we deserve pandering to ourselves in these bleak times.
In field tests, the 40cm lens head compared favourably in terms of required exposure to the UV-Nikkor. For sharpness the UV-Nikkor wins hands down, which is no big surprise. However the UV-Nikkor despite its manifold attractions is no 400mm ...
-
Impressive setup.
I see the snow has vanished, look as you have nice weather.
-
Interesting setup!
Could you specify the exact Baader U ring you used?
-
Interesting setup!
Could you specify the exact Baader U ring you used?
The Novoflex head has 48mm threads - very unusual for standard photographic purposes, but normal in astro etc. The Baader U itself sits into a small cell comprised of a Nikon K2 to give rear F bayonet for the PB-4, and a holding ring which simply is 48 to 52 step ring. A K-4 is used as an extra spacer.
It's easy to put other 48mm sized filters in lieu of the Baader U for IR or other specialised applications. Or other filter sizes if a different filter cell is devised.

I have an even older Novoflex Fernobjektiv 1:5.6 f=40cm. It does not have the pistol grip but can be used with a Novoflex bellows. Here it is attached to the camera with a Novoflex NEXA and an Sony E to Nikon Z adapter.
For the latest incarnation of the Novoflex follow-focus lens, there exists a replacement for the pistol grip with a focusing mechanism; the Novoflex TUBUS-D. It is very solid but rare. I tried to get one a few years ago in an auction, but didn't win.
-
Kim, a nicely looking Novoflex!! I too have a "Fernojektiv f=40cm", but obviously the exterior is differerently finished. Both likely are nearly 60 years old by now. In my really young days I sometimes borrowed a friend's Novoflex with the Pistol Grip for shooting wildlife, a feat which I never mastered to satisfaction. Thus the idea of the Novoflex hibernated until the last couple of years, when Ulf Wilhelmsson, a Swedish member of UVP, demonstrated the vintage Novoflex passed a lot of UV. So I bought into the 'Schellschuss' system again, but quickly found the Pistol Grip idea would not work for UV in the field. Hence the dedicated setup shown in a previous post.
-
Mine is from the 50's. The advantage of this one is that it actually has a tripod socket just behind the aperture element. The lens head can also be rotated. The specific lens is most likely made for a Leica. It ends in a 39mm thread, which fits the Novoflex belllows.
-
Both look gorgeous!
Do these "Fernobjektive" consist of a single optical design of two glued convex- and concave elements like Leica Telyt 560mm and 480 lenses?

Yes, I compared this lens with the new 28/1.4 E and the latter wins on all accounts, also very good up close.

Have both the 28mm wins where acute sharpness is wanted the oof of the 24 is preferred.

The setup below is inspired by this thread: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53810416 (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53810416)
I found the idea of using a Canon 500D close-up lens as a telephoto lens quite interesting. The Canon is a 2-lens design (doublet achromat) like the Noflexar long lenses (except the T-Noflexar).
I made a setup with a PB-6 bellows, the extension bellows PB-6E, a PN-11, the extension rings PK set, some step-up rings, and the Canon 500D 72mm.
The result is a f/9.6 500mm. The limit for aperture is the 52mm diameter of the tubes.
Below a picture of the setup and an example picture with a crop. It is seen from the full picture that there is some vignetting.
This is the crop - the other pictures follow.

Preparing for an editorial. I just love shooting in cloudy weather (maybe because is no usual here)
The Z6 85mm 1.8 S combination did great overall but it does struggle with movement, even just walking towards the camera at normal pace. Sure, it was a f2 but still...

John, that scale plays games with the mind.
Wide maximum 1.8 meters. As the signal gently says. Can you spot the many scratches on the wall from cars a bit too bold?
D5, 35mm 1.4 ai
Reminds me of the two streets surrounding La Catedral in Ronda (one good, the other one BAD): I was able to pass without scratching, but it was impossible to open doors or even exit off a window. Fortunately a passerby helped us, it was a matter of millimeters...

Signs of spring here too. Snow everywhere except Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge where airport crews have used their machinery to clear the snow to welcome our winged guests. They do not do this just out of their good heart. If the fields were not cleared, the only other larger snow free area for the birds to rest would be the airport.

Honkers - Canadian Geese (Branta canadensis)
These geese seemed to be confused. There used to be a very large pond at the VA hospital about a bow shot away from where they are standing. The VA bulldozed the pond knowing that veterans staying at the hospital would rather look out their windows and see a butt ugly roof with aluminum vents than a pond with aquatic birds. The geese flew all this way and there's no pond so they just stand around thinking, WTF?

Thank you, Colin. Actually, it looks more like two drops hit the handrail simultaneously.
Because of the shutter release lag, it is virtually impossible for a hobby photographer to capture "the moment". The image was the result of pure luck! Also, I used a 45mm lens on the full-frame, so this is an extremely heavy crop barely helped by the "Enhance" function lately added to ACR.
It has been very dry for a couple of days here, so the shower offered some moisture. Hope you will have some rain only outside of your house!

Ruth and I just spent some days on our usual remote island. No internet, no TV, hardly even cell connectivity, so really cut off from the world. A most welcome spring break.
On the way back, I become aware of the tracks on the beach followed by an immediate association to the 'sea tanks' featured in the apocalyptic novel 'The Kraken Wakes' by the English writer John Wyndham. The book was first published in 1953 and might be not as well known to the public of today as his previous work entitled 'The Day of the Triffids'. Both are very well worth a read even today.
-
First mosquitos of the season showing up here, in spite of the snow. This is a large species overwintering as adult, likely Culiseta alaskaensis, also going by the fitting common name "snow mosquitos". One can be tricked as they sound more like buzzing flies, not the familiar high pitched sound of mosquitos one are used to. I already got several bites, so I did not feel bad about pinching this one that was trying to get to the dog I am looking after.

I followed Birna's advice on another thread and went out to do a little shooting. Our Mediterranean landscape in California is transitioning from the end of the wet season to the beginning of the dry season, where the grasses and flowers are largely dormant in the form of seeds, roots, and the like. This year the wet season delivered only a fraction of the usual moisture so there will likely be some bad fires later in the year. Still, there are flowers to be found.

Despite my transition, I'm still capable of indulging my previous nerdy instincts. This time just showing a test shot with the 38mm f/2.8 Olympus OM macro lens (modified to Nikon F mount) equipped with a modified Laowa LED ring light, the package deployed on one of my V1 cameras through the Erik-enhanced FT-1 adapter. I could, thanks to the quite bright LED light, easily shoot at pretty fast speeds 1/125-1/200 sec with a hand-held camera. All this in preparation for the upcoming field season, which looks to be very busy indeed. Probably will use a Z camera instead of the little V1 for any serious macro work in the field, though. The OM 38/2.8 itself is all metal, very robust and gives good image quality so is ideal for the hazards of field investigations on aquatic plants. The Laowa LED ring light is designed for their 25mm f/2.8 'ultra-macro' lens, which I use extensively, but constrained to studio photography. With a suitable ring from my odds-and-ends boxes and some Epoxy glue, the ring light now is seated on the Olympus lens. I purchased another Laowa ring light for use on the 25mm lens as these items are quite inexpensive. In field I feed power to the ring light from a Power Bank, in the studio any 5V USB source will do.

Thanks Bent! I am always amazed at the miracles that this little 382 gram midget can do. Very nice as an everyday-carry camera with its native 10mm or 18.5mm lenses, but works with big tele lenses. It has unique features that were excluded from current mirrorless cameras, such as 1/16000" exposure, and burst modes @10fps, 20fps and even 60fps (very useful for stacked shots of the moon)
