Title: Layered TIF/TIFF Files v. PSD Files?
Post by: David H. Hartman on March 25, 2021, 01:32:33
I'm wondering about future compatibility of my PSD files created by Photoshop CS2. What other programs can open these files?

Would a layered TIF or TIFF file offer compatibility or portability advantages now or in the future? Yes I had to mention the unknown future. Would layered TIF or TIFF files create larger files without giving any advantage?

TIFs are larger than PSDs.

As far as I know, all imaging programs can read the Composite Image in a layered Tif; but you may find that only Photoshop can make edits to Tif layers which contain content that you created in Ps.

Thank you!

I guess there is probably no advantage to saving layered TIF(s) as compared to PSD(s).

I always save Ps-edited images in PSD format. But may be for the wrong reasons (file size).

I store my edited images as TIFFs as in the past I've found PSD files to be incorrectly read by some non-Adobe software.

Thanks for the reply! An anecdote follows...

I once had a computer crash while I was partitioning a HD for my operating systems HD. Stupid me!  :o I neglected to un-cable my DATA HD(s). The crash took out the MBR (Master boot record(s)) on all four HD in the computer. I was backed up but about 1 month out of data. Stellar Phoenix Data recovery software recovered all but 30 PSD files and one TIF. The 30 PSD files were recovered as thumbnails only. All of my IMG and NEF files were recovered. I over wrote as examination all the recovered NEF files with the back up NEF files. As far as I could tell I recovered all of my financial (trivial pursuit) and correspondence files. After buying an external 1TB HD for the recovery I bought an additional five 1TB HD(s). Since I had the original NEF(s) I was able to recreate the PSD and probably did a better job on the second try.

Anyway for some reason PSD files may not be recovered correctly. For those who don't backup redundantly Ye Be Warned. It can happen.
