Title: Roland Vink's Lens Pages Down...
Post by: David H. Hartman on January 02, 2021, 03:31:13
Roland Vink's Lens Pages ( https://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html (https://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html) ) are Down. Please tell me Roland is OK.

Years ago I exchanged emails with Roland, don't remember what but it must have been about Nikkor lenses. I always read his post here at NikonGear. The information he kindly provides is of great value. Now I'm getting a 404 page not found error when I try to access his site. I hope he is doing well.

Dave

I started this discussion under lenses since forever I have referred to this page seeking information about Nikkor lenses.
Edit to add the correct address that works: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html (http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html)

Excellent! I'll bookmark this link!

This site exhibits a very high level of availability.

Maybe we should wait and see if it comes up again - this would be a good time of year to do site maintenance.

I haven't realized I've been accessing to his older(?) non-secured site until know.  The non-secured site is accessible.

His site "Nikon lenses serial numbers" is perfectly reachable in NY. No problem.   LZ

Thanks for your concern, I am well! I can load all the pages on my site and my provider has not sent any recent notifications that they are doing maintenance. Not sure where the problem lies... :o

The http-based URL works just fine. Using https however generates 404 errors.

Roland, I'm glad all is well. I'll figure out the technicalities of the web tomorrow.

Dave

My stupid browser hides http:// v. https// from me!

Oops! I didn't mean to start a, "Paul McCartney is dead" scenario. A Firefox update gifted me a "browser.urlbar.trimURLs = True" and “(x) Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows” on a school computer with all kinds of neat security policies set and I freaked out.  :(

On my Firefox, the "https" caused the alert warning that it detected a potential security risk.  :o :o :o

Safari (Mac OS) gives a similar warning.

On my current Linux box, running Firefox 84.x, the https URL results directly in 404 Error, whilst http URL promptly loads the requested page.

With the NG site, one is automatically taken to the https by behind-the-curtain automatics. Apparently there is no such mechanism at Roland's site.

On this Windows 10, Enterprise box using "About:Config" I've set "browser.urlbar.trimURLs = False" and “(x) Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in private windows only”. I'm doing a fresh install of OS X High Sierra on an older MacBook Pro and "Bird Sitting" a friend's lovable but mischievous cockatoo.
