For about the last 10 years or so, instead of staying up to midnight on New Year's Eve, the family has had an early night and got up early to catch the first sunrise of the new year. Here is our start to 2021 from New Zealand :)
What a beautiful sunrise! Your info on the MF Nikkor lenses are always helpful, but I'd like you to post more of your images!+1

Thanks Fons - no thankfully I have been C-19 free all along, but sadly my brother contracted terminal cancer in 2019 and I went back to NZ in the last quarter of 2019 and then again in February 2020 to nurse him. He passed in May 2020, but I got stuck in NZ as part of the NZ nation wide C-19 lock down and have been here ever since. I hope to get back to Australia in March.
NZ have been lucky in respect of C-19, but were greatly helped by a comprehensive pandemic plan drawn up in 2002 to combat SARS and successive prime ministers from both sides of the political divide have thankfully kept it up to date to combat MERS in 2008/9 and then a bad avian flu outbreak in 2016 so the NZ prime minister and her government had something very solid to work from when C-19 came along. We were also helped by the fact that our Director General of Health is a medical man whose specialties are the management of epidemics and pandemics and who has had significant WHO experience. It is also fair to say that the NZ population has worked as a team.
The sun was shining to day, fantastic weather, cold but beautiful.

Today it's the real winter of the Nordic kind. Still, little snow, but pretty cold -17C so I don't envy the young lady walking her dog. Fortunately for all of us, there is but little wind.
I shot this as pure UV monochrome using a W-Nikkor 3.5cm f/3.5 with the Baader U filter on a NEX-5N Monochrome (thanks for the camera, Vivek). This Nikkor might not be the best in terms of transmitting "deep" UV, but it delivers results with an undeniable crispness despite being used with a hand-held camera.

Earlier today, Birna in the aftermath of an exhausting session of MRI scanning
Earlier today, Birna in the aftermath of an exhausting session of MRI scanning for the newly detected brain tumor on her hearing nerve. Sick and nauseous -- that contrast fluid with all its Gadolinium ions really is awful. That the health care service is free confers little consolation.
I snapped a photo nonetheless, for the scrap book :(
Sorry to hear Birna, please take care. From me too

Sharp lens for sweet results. I wonder why it is not more widespread.
Sharp lens for sweet results. I wonder why it is not more widespread.
I tried it once and was pleased with the results. The VC worked admirably. Sadly, it is too big and weighs too much especially combined with D750 to carry around casually...
The weight is 540grams and dimensions are 91.7 x 80.4 mm, for me a selling point is a mfd of 29,5 cm etc..
I really don´t know how to read that image but hope for the best for sure.
It took me > 48 hours to fully recover from the horrible MRI contrast fluid they injected me with. Just the future mention of 'gadolinium' makes me cringe.
Today I had come to the stage of browsing through the MRI footage. No doubt I have had an alien visitor from outer space which silently burrowed into my head. Ouch. This is worse than I had anticipated.
Birna,
sorry to learn about your alien.
Hope that the neuroma is of benign character and that its removal will be returning you to normality.
All the best for sure :)

The last set is written in three kanji's and one hira-gana, and reads "mu-sin-no-kokoro", which means like "a state of mind of nothingness" (hope it would make any sense). |
Thanks for your concern, Paco.Ouch, so sorry to read about this. All the best Birna!
Lots of strange things residing inside one's skull, that's for sure. However, the white "lump" pointed out by the red arrow should *not* be there. It is a tumor ('neuroma') on the hearing and balance nerves. Nature has not made any space available for it and accordingly, it causes -- literally -- headaches, balance impairment, and an increasing loss of hearing. If allowed to grow, it eventually becomes fatal.

“Ku-ra-u » : Clare, maybe ?
Nice umbrella, Paco!"To eat in a rather wild way" It is so close to home by chance...this cracked me up ;D ;D ;D
On your request. :)
The majority of the Japanese letters are called "kata-kana" which are commonly used to write foreign words or onomatopoeia. The red letters read "pa-co", so it is not difficult to assume that the umbrella was designed for Paco.
The letters above "pa-co" reads "a-na" which would be a female name. Clockwise from there: "ku-ra-u" (I'm not sure what it means. "To eat in a rather wild way", maybe? ), "do-kko-do" (again, it doesn't make any sense to me), "ni-ko-n" (there should be no need to explain!), for the next group, I cannot see the whole word. ), "u-i-chi" (seemingly a male name, but I'm not sure), "o-ru-ga" obviously refers to "bailarina fantastica" (the Japanese doesn't have the pronunciation of "L", so "L" and "R" are treated equally or confused).
The last set is written in three kanji's and one hira-gana, and reads "mu-sin-no-kokoro", which means like "a state of mind of nothingness" (hope it would make any sense).
Akira, you are right on all accounts. This are the names of: Olga (oruga); Clau (Kurau), short form of Claudia, for my goddaughter; Wichi (U ichi) for the latest newborn in the family; Nikon should explain itself ;D, Ana for my mother; I´m afraid do-kko-do is a very bad phonetic translation of: Dokkōdō (獨行道); and finally,
mu sin no kokoro or mushin no shin (無心の心), a Zen expression meaning the mind without mind and is also referred to as the state of "no-mindness". That is, a mind not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion and thus open to everything. It have been taken from Japanese culture and translated directly into the world of arts, specially to dance, as the state of mind can be very similar, if not the same, when dancing on stage. In english it is called "to flow". Train to achieve this state of mind on stage so that a flawless execution of moves is accomplished. Or that is the idea anyway. I came in contact with this concept early in my career.
I hope, Akira San, this is perceived with all the respect I put into it.
Just the for fact that you can read it at all I can call it a success! ;D
Oh, and Pa-co for yours truly 8)

LOL, Paco, thanks for the correction and the further explanation! I didn't know the shortened name Clau and Dokkōdō (I don't even know how to type "ō" ::) ::) ::) ).
Still, an explanation would be needed for the word between "ni-ko-n" and "u-i-chi". ::)

Thanks for the comment John and Akira. I did push up saturation some, however it matches the visual perception of the type of light that can appear during these winter months. It is actually vertical 3-frame stitch.

Cuco (カッコウ/Kakkō) is my cousin. When we were teenagers he took some photography lessons in school and was one of my early contacts with the subject.
