Work around to make a short low quality video - if you only want the audio- to record yourself and sort the files by time.

Good idea Frank.
The Olympus OMD bodies have a voice note feature built in to them. The voice recording is placed on a separate file with the same file number of the image's jpg or raw file but with its own file extension. Let us hope that in the future Nikon sees fit to do the same.

The higher-end DSLRs from Nikon have had that feature for years. I never understood why the concept wasn't kept for the middle-tier models as the extra circuitry hardly could be expensive ... The naming of the recorded sound file (.wav) with the same name as the image file was practical. You could in fact add the sound any time after the shutter release as long as it occurred before the next frame.

And I agree with you as to why the feature has not been included on other than single digit camera bodies - it cannot be that hard.
