Title: Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIs - a rejoicing rediscovery
Post by: Luc on October 02, 2020, 19:04:00
I'm slowly but steadily rediscovering the joy of manual focus lenses on the Z6.
Today I took the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIs out for a spin and by chance found a vintage shop with lots of photo opportunities.

+1 from me also.

And what a find - the shop seems to have just about everything.  I hope that you kept your wallet zipped up!  ;D

Very nice Luc.

Thanks Fons and Hugh for watching and commenting.

Hugh, I was so concentrated on looking for subjects and scenes to photograph I didn't pay attention on anything nice to buy. So now I have to go there again, without camera!

Impressive Stuff, Luc.

The great 28mm f/2.8 Ai-S  is also very suitable for evening/night shots. Has a remarkable clarity.

Yes, it is one of my most used lenses for meteor showers. Untracked Geminid from December 2018 at f/3.2, 15sec exposure at ISO1600, Aurora at f/2.8 15sec:

Great shop and shots, Luc  :) That little lens is a gem (though I use it on the Df). Nice to see it's still as good on the Z !

Superb images from a superb little lens!  When I was building my Nikon lens list, f2 was the watchword, and I purchased the 24, 35 and 50mm lenses with  f2 but somehow went to f2.8 for the 28mm, and spent some time regretting my decision, but finally came to realize that the little f2.8 has no need to make any apologies for its smaller aperture, and may be even sharper than its bigger brother. My Df doesn't care what aperture lens it is accommodating, and I also have a comparatively tiny f3.5 28mm always in danger of being overlooked.

Thanks Kenneth.  The f2.8 is indeed very sharp, even in the corners. Remarkable for such an old design.

Another one from the vintage shop.

Iso 4.000 (such a joy to be able to shoot high iso's on the Z6)

More good use of the 28mm f/2.8 AIS here, Luc and Jacques!

Here is another night shot, handheld wide open with D5100 at 1/10 s ISO 800. I was also impressed by the corner performance wide open when I got this lens.

(note EXIF is has incorrect focal length, as this was before I re-chipped the lens).

Very nice Øivind. Great bokeh also, no cat eye shape or onion rings I like that.

Thanks for the kind comment on my night capture.
Luc, so ESA took it into space (especially the first one, all really nice).  ;D

On a smaller scale it works quite well in reversed mode (BR-2A + a filter ring):

Luc : At first I thought the 28mm f/2.8 AI-s did go into space... Nice shots  ;)

The f/2.8 can also be useful because of it's minimum distance focus (20 cm) for small objects when you don't have a Micro lens at hand !
