most of my published photos were shot with the D700 :o :o :o
I tried a D700 this afternoon after 8 years of not using one and I was blown away by the character of the photos and the metering. theres something very special about the sensor of these cameras and how they handle details. something that I didnt see when I switched to the D4 and eventually the Df ::)
the pixels look more defined and less mushy like what i get from a D7000 and everything that came after it.
do you see the same thing? is it just me imagining things?
-
I like the same for my Nikon D3s and also the D700. I think the large pixels (Full Frame- 4284k, 12mp) contribute to this character and detail handling. Files are also very flexible
-
The D3s was a pinnacle in its time. Still is, if the "small" files don't bother you.
-
theres something about the way it renders photos :o :o :o
very film-like!
-
I kept my D700 (although some new achievements came in) and still like it - should put it in action again soon
-
My son still uses my old D700 and has no reason to complain. Of course he cannot push the ISO beyond 3200 where I'd use 12800 with the Df (a 2-stop difference), but within those limits the image quality is quite good, even by today's standards. And above all, it *works* (no trouble in 11 years).

Interesting. Let me ask where the D7200 images fall in this conversation?
I'm embarrassed to say that between the self-quarantining due to the CPVID-19 situation, and my ever- increasing ARMD, I've not picked up a camera in far too long. I can see, and enjoy, crispy sharp images on my display, but I'm dependent on AF in making my own images.

the details of the D7000 and D4 look "mushy" to me, not blocky like the previous generation :o :o :o
-
I like the files from my D4 better than those from my D3. They are cleaner at high ISO and are more malleable in post processing. I have no opinion on the details.
-
I cannot compare D700´s output with newer cameras as I did not try any of those.
But I bought used D700 last year again, after I lost previous one couple of years ago, and man - I do love this machine.
And they are cheap now. Really great. :-)
-
The D700 seems remarkably popular after 10 years!...a huge time in digital photo terms. How do the files stand up to A2 enlargement? Presumably there is no video facility...what about 'live view'...??

You are right there is no video functionality - which can be advantageous as well
D700 has got live view but that is not its strongest side. Live view is more complicated to activate than with recent cameras and the mirror operations during live view are more "inefficient".
There is also a kind of LV- bug. When using AF-lenses with aperture ring and the camera is set-up to use the ring for aperture setting, Live view does not work.

.... How do the files stand up to A2 enlargement? ....
I did just a couple of such large prints and upscaled the files using some software (do not remeber which one though).
But I was very satisfied with results.
-
As much as i long for a D4s I can't seem to part with my D700 and D3.
As a matter of fact i can't seem to part with my D1x, D2h and D2x..
It's time to do it never the less if i plan to move on to a D4.
-
Gigapixel can make surprisingly good upsized files. Once upon a time a client ordered an 8 x 4m (!) print from a D1X file.
-
154992640 <- this is the shutter count of my D3 :o :o :o
I tested this with 3 websites! how can this be!?
having said that, theres something magical about the old sensor that nikon uses, certainly renders differently compared to newer ones. i will do a test and see if i am just nostalgic or not ::)

I agree that images from the D3 sensor have (or had, in my case) a certain charm to them that is not fully explained by numbers and measurements. The dynamic range of capture has since been exceeded by newer sensors, but the D3 was capable of beautiful imagery.
-
Just for reference since it is the D3 ;)
A lot more about the D3

i went to Nikon, they attached my camera to a computer and the shutter count now is unbelievable, it's around 2600 actuations!
what is happening!? :o :o :o
I cant believe it...it was crazy high yesterday now its unbelievably low ::)
-
Did you check the shutter count in the Maker Notes with ExifTools/EXIFToolsGUI?

i uploaded my file to 3 different websites :o :o :o
-
Your camera is Connor Macleod, the highlander ;D
-
if it indeed has that much shutter count then my camera would have looked more worn.
i got it because it looked new :o :o :o
its now time to look for a cheap D3s ::)
I have no experience with the D3x, can anybody confirm that it has the same look as the D3 when it comes to photos?

You should ask Erik, as he has been using D3X as his main camera.

Love my D3S
Autumn leafs on a rainy night (with AF-D 85/1.4)
-
D3X same look and feel, just better resolution.
ISO surpassed by all of the later cameras,,,

thank you. somebody told me that the D3x uses the 24mp sensor that sony never wanted and is worse than the A7, is this true? :o :o :o

there's something about the algorithm of these cameras, my photos look like they were shot with Provia. :o :o :o

Another vote for the D700. My first DSLR. Cannot bring myself to get rid of it even though i rarely use it. (My Df is my favorite.). Like the Df, the D700 works great with all my Nikkor manual focus lenses. Must be something about the big pixels in both cameras that make the images so satisfying.

Back 2010 I bought a D300s. The price was $1,699.00~. I always wished I could have bought a D700 but the price was about $2,299.00 as I recall. I just didn't think I could push that far.

At the time, I saw many reviews telling pictures from D700 and D300 that were supposed to be comparable in term of how they look. Did any one notice the same?
BTW, I passed a $300 deal for a mint D700 a few weeks ago and I feel like a dumb now ;)
Cheers,
Zang

I know of a nice D3 going for a reasonable price, not too far from you ;D
-
The D700 I saw had 4000 actuations, I believe. People did not buy D3 for curious cabinet displaying, I assume ;) Those D3 I saw had 150K actuation in average :)
-
The D3 that I have for sale has only 9086 actuations. I am close enough to deliver it.
You want a D3. <Waves hand and hopes fervently that his Jedi mind powers finally manifest>

Oh, I see. That sounds like a cool deal! However, I have changed my plan a bit and I am so tempted to get a new Z6/Z5 (only one of those, of course). May not be right for Christmas (still putting on saving :) ) but maybe early next year.
Thanks anyway :)
-
But if you have D700 for $300 then for sure, let me know ;) D700 will not set me back as much as D3 :)
-
Love my D3S
Agreed. And my 85 1.4D.
-

very film-like!
I agree about the D700. For that "film like" my guess is you haven't spent time with one of the old 13.5mp, Kodaks. I wish Nikon had similar imagery and the ability to index lenses like the Kodak.
-
Agreed. And my 85 1.4D.
Yes, that is a lovely combination.

D3S AF-D 85/1.4

D3S AF-D 85/1.4
This makes me wonder why we need more advanced technology. Let stop here... ;)
-
Making money! ;)
-
Another lovely portrait.
And as Zang says - the D3s + the 85mm + the operator have all delivered - as did the cat! ;D
D3S AF-D 85/1.4

+1
All the ingredients and participants working together. Gorgeous

Thanks Hugh and Paco

Nikon D3S Micro Nikkor 105/2.8 Ai-S
-
Beautiful light and compositionl, John. I don't see CA. The AI-S seems to handle CA better than the 105 2.8 VR.
-
Thanks Peter. I find, but that may be my personal view, the Micro 105mm/2.8 Ai-S Nikon's best 105mm Macro lens. (also because of the bokeh)
-
Nikon D3s Nikkor AF-D 105/2 DC
'Dobby'.
-
The blue background for the apples is unexpected, but works really well! Nicely shot.
-
Thanks Jack.

D700 with 135/2.8 Q and micro adapter ring.
My first try of focus stacking.
