If you had time to plan & frame this beforehand, fair enough.

My new dietary regimen excludes bananas, but such fruits can find other fields of application besides being eaten :) Some of my Duckweed cultures are grown in enclosures with slices of banana or apple inside; this to generate ethylene gas. I do this to trigger formation of gibbous fronds of some species (such as Fat Duckweed Lemna gibba, which unfortunately can exist in a non-gibbous form since these plants don't read the Flora description ...). Ethylene, being a gaseous growth hormone, is claimed to induce gibbosity if the culture can produce such growth form.
After about 5 weeks sure enough. some fronds tend to be more swollen, so that's fine as I already have identified them as Lemna gibba on other criteria. However, with these morphologically reduced and highly plastic aquatic species, there is always a question about their identity unless true differential criteria are observed. Hence my culture experiments.
What I hadn't thought of beforehand is that ethylene apparently can trigger flowering as well. The putative L. gibba culture started flowering yesterday, many weeks or even months before any flowering would have occurred in the wild. The Duckweed flower is truly minuscule, comprising 1-2 stamens and a style all of which is enclosed in a basal, hyaline spatha.
Here is a UV capture of one such flower, shot at 4X magnification with a reversed Coastal 60mm f/4 on my UV-only modified Nikon D3200. The small object on the left, looking like a minute apple, is in fact a pollen grain of a Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris. That pollen grain is 65 µm (0.065mm) so sets the overall impression of scale here. The complete stamen with filament and anther is around 400 µm. A normal human hair is around 75 µm (Europe) to 100-120 µm (Asia). Not much size-wise for this flower, but it does have what is required to ensure a future seed set. Because the Duckweeds have such efficient vegetative multiplication and dispersal, one might wonder why the plant bothers to flower at all. Maybe a fall-back option to ensure a tiny chance of genetic recombination? Nature as usual answers with more questions.

Looks like it's from the dark side of the moon ;D

More Duckweed flowers. Tiniest of them all standing merely 0.3mm "tall", so even 10X magnification really isn't sufficient. I'll have to go up to 20-30X next time. Meaning even more tricky getting the shot as there is a time constraint; these minuscule plants can't be out of water long before they literally dwindle away.
Z7, Mitutoyo 10x/0.28 objective. The flower started to wilt during the shoot so sharpness suffered. I had to abort the stacking sequence early. No more subject at hand :(.

Watching the sunset. A group of youngsters have chosen this spot to pass their evenings. Not a bad choice...
-
Thanks, Colin & Paco. Appreciated. This kind of photography is, frankly, more of a challenge than I really like, but being stubborn I soldier on. The restricted time window before the plants literally disappear (by drying out) is the biggest hurdle, though. The pure technical aspects are much easier to deal with.

"Homoerotic" -- two male parts here :)
The flowers do show a surprising variation in their build: staminate, pistillate, or dioecious flowers in a confusing array of flowering plants. Some have aborted carpels, others actively "suck in" pollen through funnel-shaped structures. and perhaps there is some insect pollinators afoot as well, since some pistillate flowers do secret nectar. The latter observation was very unexpected and novel -- haven't seen this mentioned in any of the duckweed literature I have read the last years.

Last instalment in the Duckweed Flower Series for now.
This is the female (pistillate) flower of the Fat Duckweed Lemna gibba. Its truly minuscule size, merely 200 µm (about 2 hairs combined in thickness) necessitated running my Multiphot extended to the maximum 30X magnification using 19mm f/2.8 Macro-Nikkor and the Z7.
Finding the tiny flower in my culture was one thing, locating it and focusing on it under such high magnification another story. Suffice it to say I afterwards constructed an XY(Z) table for the Multiphot, Z-axis being automated by a Stackshot rail, to make further photomacrographs easier to accomplish. I also ordered a Mitutoyo 20X infinity-corrected objective as I think this might be an optically better approach.

Thanks Frank and Colin. That was a lucky shot, considering the short appearance. Yesterday, as I suspected, the hummingbird clearwing moths were hanging around in some lilacs where I had seen them a previous year at initiation of blooming, and kept coming back. Returning home from a late afternoon walk with my dog, I saw these sunlit ferns in my side yard. Didn't think they would remain so lit long enough to get a camera and lens on them because the sun passes through the woods quickly at that time of day, but they stayed so illuminated for another moment or two after I got there with all my paraphernalia. Hooray!

There was a major update of the firmware for SIGMA fp. There are some some interesting improvements, and the "Color Mode (corresponding to Picture Profile in Nikon term) Off" is one of them. The unprocessed images look as if they were shot in some log profile. Since I had purchased the camera, I've felt that Sigma's RAW (DNG) images were a bit too contrasty even in the "neutral" color mode. So, I really like this new "off" setting because I can now make the images in a natural tone.

Thank you, Keith and Paco, for your interest. I will post some comparison of the neutral and off. I used to like the flat picture profile of Nikon but Sigma fp didn't offer any flat profile. Its neutral profile was noticeably more contrasty and saturated than Adobe neutral, and thus I needed to start my processing from Adobe neutral. The new color mode "off" setting offer the most pliable DNG images which would be my favorite.
Sigma offered other improvements for stills like double base sensitivity of ISO 100 and 3200 and other image improvements whose details Sigma hasn't disclosed yet. But the high-ISO images seem to be improved dramatically in terms of noise and dynamic range.
