Richard, another interesting write up.
OK, so this one is about a Canon 7 - now I am really worried! :o You do not have the flu I hope? ;D
(Upon reflection, Canon's had Nikkor lenses back then, so not quite as bad as I first thought! Phew, LOL - I was worried for a short while. ;D.)
-
Hugh, at what at did Canon stop using Nikon lenses? I have an early Canon screw thread lens, a 28mm f2.8. Would it be Canon or Nikon? It is an uncoated lens.
-
Kenneth, Canon started to stop using Nikkor lenses in 1946 when they commenced making their own lenses. Up until then, Canon and Nikon had close working relationships.
Work on the Nikon I rangefinder camera also commenced in 1946, with sales starting in 1948. The cessation of WWII marked the point where Nikon started work on building camera bodies, and where Canon started making its own camera lenses. Nikon did not achieve camera body volume until 1948 and Canon only achieved lens volume in 1947. The two companies then proceeded along their own lines and forged their separate identities around this time.
If your lens has Nikkor or Nippon Kogaku on it, then it is a Nikon lens; Canon lenses are branded as such.
Some history is here: https://www.canonrangefinder.org/Nikkor_50mm.htm

Thanks, this is interesting. I list the early Nikkors for Canon Hansa cameras here: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html#RF_5cm
But I don't know much about their history.

Interesting. Learned something again. ;)
Thanks for posting, and for the additional links

part 2 :o :o :o
speaking of early Nikkors, i am now looking for a kwanon with a 50/4.5 Nikkor ::)
-
Japanese pronunciation of Kwanon, the old name for Canon before it was Europeanised, is very similar to the pronunciation of Canon as I understand the history of the company and its name.
-
i am a Buddhist so the Kwanon name has some significance to me ::)
apart from being the vessel for the first consumer Nikkor :o :o :o

Oh,,,, you got to hunt for a Canon 50mm f/0.95 :o :o :o to fit this? 8)
Never seen one apart before, surprising low build quality on the internal, taps and wires soldered here and there, looks like a quick and dirty product
