Title: Best cheap Portrait Lens for Nikon D850
Post by: f4-fan on March 17, 2020, 12:50:01
Dear Nikon friends,

i'm currently looking for an inexpensive portrait lens that gives very good results on the D850. Before my system change to Nikon I had 'unfortunately' one of the best Canon portrait lenses (Canon 85mm 1.2 II),

Here are some of my former sample photos mainly with Canon 5D MK 2/3 and Canon 85mm 1.2 II:
https://www.fotogemeinschaft.de/die-besten-portraetobjektive-fuers-digitale-vollformat/2140/

so I am very spoiled by good bokeh and outstanding sharpness and overall portrait-effect at open aperture.

For my desired lens (Nikon 105mm 1.4 ED) my money is currently not enough.
I'm saving for it but at the moment - after the system change from Canon - it's much too expensive.
The lens should be a cheap  intermediate solution (portraiture insider tip) for the D850

Also the second choice lenses (Nikon 85mm 1.4 Ai-s or AF-Nikon 85mm 1.4 or Nikon 105mm 2.0 DC) are too expensive for me at the moment.

So I'm looking for a lens (105mm and /or 85mm ...; manual or AF) which is up to the requirements of the D850 and doesn't cost more than 100-200 EUR used. (insider tips for the D850)

Which one would you recommend as the best compromise? (Please only Ai or later; no conversion necessary)

And - very important: I need many sample photos (e.g. on Flickr) to be able to judge the bokeh and the overall effect.

Thanks
Ralf

I'd suggest the 105/2.5 Nikkor AI.

I also like the 105/2.5 very much……who does not like this lens?
I also like Nikkor 85/1.8 H or H-C (you need AI-ed version)…...very smooth bokeh but may be difficult to find for less than 200 Euros.
The 85/1.8 AFD may be cheaper…...and it is also a fine lens.....but I have never owned one….only watched some nice images.
I know some does not like the 85/2 manuel focus (you need an AI'ed version). I have some of them…..and I could not find any problems with this lens.....
The 85/2 you should be able find quite cheap.....
The old 135/3.5 and 135/2.8  .....could also be an option.....the 4-lens designs often has a nice bokeh....but is probably not as sharp......but sharp enough for portraits. Some of these old lenses has been AI'ed. I think the 135/2.8 exists both in a four lens and five lens version.......I have them but never used them other than a few test shots. From that I remember that they have a nice bokeh......but have not made a close inspection for sharpness.

At least you can get these old Nikkor 135 very cheap:
http://forum.mflenses.com/nikon-nikkor-q-135mm-f3-5-test-t40101.html

.....but at $30-$50 it may be difficult to compete with a modern Canon bokeh master lens......

To nail focus on the D850, consistently and under portrait conditions I strongly recommend the DC 105mm f/2.0 AF-D

It's so good at many types of images but especially portraits since its sharp enough and has great bokeh and color tonation and graduation

A used version in mint condition costs nearly 2/3 (800-900,-) of a new Nikkor 105mm 1.4  with rebate (1800,- ./. 19 % VAT 1512,- ./. potential rebate of 200,- = 1300)

In the meantime (i.e. until the next discount campaign) I am looking for a particularly inexpensive solution...  ;D

If none of these work for you, I have a Nikon 180mm f2.8 ED that's in good condition that I rarely use now.

I'm in the UK - message me if this is of interest

the 1.8/85G is a superb portrait lens. It even made it to the best lenses list of ming thein:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/blog.mingthein.com/2012/11/23/nikon-85-18g/amp/

it is roughy 300€ used. The 1.8/85D is also phantastic and roughly 100€ cheaper in the used market

I am afraid that a manual 180mm lens without VR on the D850 leads to countless blurred images...

Even for my 35mm lens (1.4) I need at least 1/100 or better 1/160 sec for sharp images.

I personally don't like the look of MTs photos... (too 'perfect' and with a lot of distance)

I am searching for a lens with more subjective 'feeling/look' like the BW Portraits from Stephan Vanfleteren
https://www.stephanvanfleteren.com/artists

Perhaps like the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 Ai-s - but this lens also costs 500-700 EUR

Yes, 105/2.5 is very good....and also Nikkor-H or HC 85/1.8 (AI'ed).

Found an example of the image quality here (there should be many examples out there):

There are many examples:

Same smooth bokeh as 85/1.8....or maybe even smoother.

The 105/2.5 exists in at least two versions......an old with narrow focus ring and chrome barrel and a newer with wider focus ring (all black).
Both are very good.....but maybe go for the newer version.....and go for an AI or AI-S version.....

I cannot speak to the D850 specifically but I believe that generally speaking, lenses get better with increasing resolution sensors if you look at the final images of the same size. My experience is with D90, D7000, D700, D600, D750, and Z6 on which I have used the lenses below.

I would strongly second the recommendation for a 105/2.5 lens if your ultimate goal is to get the 105/1.4. I have the Nikkor P.C. with scalloped focus ring. This lens is simply amazing. There is a thread somewhere by Olivier Anthony who took an extensive series of excellent portraits with this lens, I believe first on the D700 and later on the Fuji XT-something, but I cannot find it now. Maybe you can contact him https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?action=profile;u=34 (https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?action=profile;u=34). Since the lens can be found so cheaply, why not simply try it out? Otherwise I can upload some test shots later, I'll see what suitable subjects I can find (human or not). Most of my shots with this lens are not portraits, I use it for everything including architecture ;D.

If you need AF, why not an AF 85/1.4 D or an AF-S 85/1.8, depending on the budget? I think the former can be found between 500-700 Euros and the latter around 200-400 Euros used. I do have experience with the 85/1.4 D. I don't use it much nowadays but every time I take it out of the drawer I'm astounded by it's beautiful rendering. It has some issues with LoCA that you need to work around depending on the conditions and if you are using apertures larger than f/2. I often use the lens from f/1.7-f/2.8 where it shows it's best IMHO. The reason I don't use it much now is because the 85mm AOV is not the most natural for me, I prefer longer (105, 135, and 180) or shorter (35, 50) most of the time. I found the lens more natural on DX than on FX, but that's just my taste.

The 180/2.8 ED Ai-s is very nice but the focal length is more niche, I would say. I use this more for concerts etc. where I need to get a tight shot from a fair distance. In any case, it has an old-school rendering which is soft and pleasing, of course the lens has quite high resolution as well, but the images look less harsh than modern designs.

Finally, the 105/2.8 AF micro (D or non-D) can be had for about the same price as a 85/1.8 AF-S and is also not bad for portraits if you can live with the slower aperture.

Thanks a lot ... I agree with everthing

Unfortunately the

A.
Nikon Nikkor P.C. 105mm f2.5

is rather expensive (300-800 (!) EUR)

AND I don't want to risc a 2. repair with a Ai-converted lens (the AI-conversion of my old micro Nikkor 55mm 3.5 destroyed the very sensitive F-FO base plate ceramic unit of my D850 ( the pressure on the bayonet was to high )

B
Example photos of AF-S 85/1.8 did:t convince me

C
AF 85/1.4 D too expensive

D.
180/2.8 ED Ai-s - very good description; perhaps not ideal for the D850

E.
Fazit: Perhaps an  105mm 2.5 Ai or Ai-s
would be the best compromise...

I am searching for a more or less 'old-school rendering' with a closer focusing distance...

This forum is a fantastic place specifically because many of it's members have the most extensive knowledge and experience with lenses you can find.  If the reputable members of NG all recommend a lens, you can trust it is good without demanding samples.  If you are looking for a portrait lens that must be cheap and you don't want to use a 50, you're simply not gonna do better than the 105/2.5.

The most famous National Geographic cover photograph was taken with the 105/2.5

I know you say you don't like it, but if you want cheap reliable AF my vote would be for the afs 85 f1.8

the 105 f.2.5 AIS is awesome but sometimes I miss the focus, I find the focus dot to be reliable with this lens - it is not reliable with the 55mm f1.2. this example is with the fuji x-t3

I do own, and use, all versions of the 105/2.5, from the early 10.5cm f/2.5 Rangefinder model up and including the 105/2.5 AIS. I warmly recommend the 105/2.5 AI version as the best of them all.

I know this lens (I've had the Nikon 105 2.5 Ai and Ais both with my former Canon 5D MK 1+2 and Nikon F4.) The Ai-s Version I had was better than the Ai Version.

I also had the 105mm f/1.8 Ai-s (I liked this lens more than the 2.5)

I also had the 85mm 1.4 Ai-s (for ME the best Portrait lens AFTER the Canon 85mm 1.2 II)
I liked the special rendering of the 85mm Ai-s very much.

Unfortunately I sold all of these lenses... AND I used theses lenses analog and with max. 22 MP-Digicams

But after my first experience with the D850, I'm really unsure whether older lenses can still meet the requirements of this camera.

If the prices werent so high, I would test

Prio A.
85mm 1.4 Ai-s  // Nikon AF 85 mm/1,4 D IF

Prio B.
105mm f/1.8 Ai-s  // 105 DC f/2.0

Prio C.
105 2.5 Ai and Ais

But with my small budget, I think Prio C will become Prio A  ;D

AND I will follow Birna's recommendation and look for a Nikon 105mm 2.5 AI version

Thanks a lot for your comments...

You can get them at about 200 Euros in photo shops (105/2.5 AI)......if lens is not like new.....but fine optically.
I have just checked the local dealer.......they also have the AI 105/1.8 at about 200 Euros......but again lens is not like new....but fine optically.
Private I think you can get a very nice like new 105/2.5 AI at about 200 euros......it my best guess.

Else.....if you want something cheaper and with a lot of personality.....search for the Nikkor Q (four lens) 135mm's....

I don't get it. So a guy buys a Ferrari and looks to equip it with budget cheap tyres!

So you get a Nikon D850 but do not have the money to buy a good portrait lens!

Nevermind that in case you are short of money, then the sensible thing to do is to buy a camera and lens within your budget.
Or put the money behind the lens which is more important than a body.

You do appreciate that a picture is not the gear but the photographer in general and portrait in particular.
Shooting wildlife - deep water....etc does need special gear.

The example you mention of Stephan Vanfleteren shows his photos retouched like there is no tomorrow.
This started in a camera and ended on a retouching bench.

105mm or 85mm or whatever is not the point. You make the picture whether in camera or in digital darkroom

Well spoken - and also true.  :)

However, I already bought 2 great lenses (Zeiss Milvus 35mm 1.4 and Nikon 14-24) and now the money (and the Nikon Instant Discount Promotion) is gone and I need something crappy and really cheap for portraiture, which still gives top performance on 46 MP.

"Stephan Vanfleteren likes working with the Rolleiflex best of all, a camera from the 1980s"

He often works analogue with medium format cameras and thus maintains the really extremely small depth of field and the wonderful overall-look in BW... which I like very much (and with KB you need f/1.4 or f/1.2 to get this

OK.....by closer look it has some small scratches at the font element (and it also mentioned) but it is pointed out that that apart from that it is optically ok:
https://www.photografica.com/brugt-51/brugt-nikkor-ai-s-105-1-8.html

1600 DKK is about 220 Euros......few minor scratches at front element usually don't effect image quality....but never nice to have a lens where optics is not 100%......
I am quite sure they will ship to outside DK.

This might be the 'crappy' top lens I'm looking for.
The only downside is it'll be hard to resell if it's not suitable with the D850...

I personally don't like the look of MTs photos... (too 'perfect' and with a lot of distance)

Are we talking about lens character or personal style here?

In this Flickr group you will find 25.000 shots taken with the 1.8/85G from hundreds of different photographers: https://www.flickr.com/groups/nikkor85mmf18g/pool/

As I remember they have a very good return policy with used equipment.......so you can swap to something else within 3 months.......at least it was so.....some years back......
But that means that you will need to send it back.....a have something else sent......
I think the white spot in the center is a light reflection.......you can always ask them.....and get more pictures of the front lens....

2 cheap ones are missing (curious which reasons will speak against them ;))

Nikon E series 2.8  100mm
Kaleinar 5N  2.8 100mm  F mount

both below € 100.- if you get them and both do a good job for portraits

And whats about the

AF 105/2.8 D Micro for portaiture?

One can get this lens in really mint condition for about 200 EUR
I only scanned this thread quickly so apologies if this has already been answered.

The AF 105/2.8 is a good macro lens, and is reasonably sharp at medium-far distances so is a good all-round lens. However the background rendition tends to be harsh at typical portrait distances, I wouldn't recommend it for this purpose. It's also relatively big and heavy for the focal length/aperture because it is a macro lens. The focus throw near infinity is very short, very difficult to focus accurately by hand, so you would have to rely on AF. Also, it is an old "screw-drive" AF lens so auto-focus is relatively noisy, with no instant manual over-ride.

The AI 105/2.5 is an excellent portrait lens, but is manual focus only. Results are excellent IF you can focus it accurately, it could be suitable for seated portraits where you have time to focus accurately, but it will be difficult to get good results for moving subjects. The D850 is very unforgiving of the slightest focus errors unless you don't enlarge greatly (in which case you may as well use a D750 instead).

Given your limited budget, I would take another look at the AF-S 85/1.8 G. It is a well regarded portrait lens, the faster aperture will give you more DoF control compared to the 105/2.5 and it has AF so you should get a much higher rate of well-focused pictures.

Good arguments against the Micro and for the AF-S 85/1.8 G.

Thus possible candidates (150-350,-) would be the :

- 105mm f/2.5 Ai (150-200 EUR used)
- 105mm f/1.8 Ai-s (with little scatches for 230 EUR)
- AF-S 85/1.8 G (330,- EUR NEW 390,- ./. VAT)
- AF 85/1.8 D (230,- EUR USED) ("Bokeh not so good; too harsh for elder faces")
----Other
- Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherique IF Nikon ? 240,- EUR NEW
- Samyang 85mm T1.5 VDSLR AS IF UMC II ? 260,- EUR NEW
- Zenitar-1N MC 85mm f1.4 ?  260,- EUR NEW

Some important comments from you summarized for my decision making:
"nailing the 105 2.5 is very difficult imho at full opening"
"All mf lenses like the ais lenses are very difficult to nail focus, to shoot wide open portrets the model will need to be at complete standtill"

"The G is very smooth /  balances perfectly with a D3 or gripped D500 or D850 /  heavily underrated lens / it is better to use the G for women ... much finer, smoother skin rendering here"

"I second Roland, the 105 mm Micro Nikkors (including the MF versions) are not for portraits as good bokeh is not their strongest side."

"Older Lenses:
105mm f/2.5 Sonnar-version
Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 P.C."

"I would strongly second the recommendation for a 105/2.5 lens if your ultimate goal is to get the 105/1.4. I have the Nikkor P.C. with scalloped focus ring. This lens is simply amazing. There is a thread somewhere by Olivier Anthony who took an extensive series of excellent portraits with this lens"

"I have not used the older AF 85/1.8 D but from comments I have read, the background bokeh wasn't so smooth unless you get relatively close to the subject with a distant background. It also flares when shooting into light and shows purple fringing in some situations (correct me if I am wrong). It is a "screw-drive" AF lens so focusing is noisier than the AF-S version and no instant manual over-ride. I think in most respects, the AF-S version is a better option."

Conclusion for me:

A. I will look for a really cheap 105mm f/2.5 Ai (130-150,-)
B. I will test the AF-S 85/1.8 G in a store...

Thanks a lot for your help!

There is also the older AF 85/1.8 D which is also a fine lens....many available at ebay:

It should work with AF with D850 body.....and is a physical small lens compared to the AFS 85/1.8 G.

330 Euro for a new AFS 85/1.8 G sounds cheap.......seems to be a "no brainer" at this price level.

With 100-200 Euro you are a bit on the limited end (too limited imho), but you can get a decent 105/2,5 which i also recommend. (bought mine for 135, AI-S version)
you probably might not make use of the full resolution but portraits usually are not the thing where details matter - and sometimes less is more.

I second Roland, the 105 mm Micro Nikkors (including the MF versions) are not for portraits as good bokeh is not their strongest side.

I have not used the older AF 85/1.8 D but from comments I have read, the background bokeh wasn't so smooth unless you get relatively close to the subject with a distant background. It also flares when shooting into light and shows purple fringing in some situations (correct me if I am wrong). It is a "screw-drive" AF lens so focusing is noisier than the AF-S version and no instant manual over-ride. I think in most respects, the AF-S version is a better option. I am sure a good used example could be found on auction sites without too much difficulty.

Of the manual 105mm micros, the 105/4 has what I would describe as "neutral" bokeh. It is not smooth like the AI 105/2.5 but it's not terrible either. With a maximum aperture of only f/4 the ability for shallow DoF effects are limited. On the other hand mechanical vignetting is very low so background blurs remain nicely rounded well out to the edges of the frame (no swirly bokeh). I have taken some good portraits with this lens.

The AIS 105/2.8 micro is also not as smooth as the 105/2.5, but I have been surprised how good it is - it is sharp and backgrounds are quite nice. The main disadvantage is the short focus throw at non-macro distances (but much better than the AF version), and the straight-edge aperture blades cause background blurs to be distinctly polygonal rather than slightly rounded as with the AI 105/2.5.

Regarding the 105 micro AF D (I cannot speak to the other micro lenses in this focal length) I agree with the others that the bokeh could be described as more defined/accentuated than dedicated portrait lenses but depending on the background the results can be pleasing. I find it very usable especially for child portraits. But of course these issues are highly subjective.

What a micro lens gets you is versatility and the ability to get close. maybe a person has got interesting hands or other features/jewelry that you want to capture and a macro lens allows you to do that virtually without constraints of MFD. I‘m suggesting it as an alternative based on the budget restrictions because it would maybe cover two different use cases. If you prefer a specialist portait lens or have macro already covered this obviously doesn‘t apply.

let me speak for Autofocus too. I have bought the D500 and the D850 both on release day and shot them extensively since then. Why do I mention both? because they have the same pixel density and both are very unforgiving when it comes to slightly defocussed shots.

The 1.8/85D is a great lens. I bought it new with my used F4s in 1996 and shots mountains of portraits and other pictures.

Why did I exchange this lens against the 1.8/85G as soon as I had tested the new lens? Transitions and rendering. The G is very smooth, the 1.4G even smoother but much too heavy for daily use.

Compared to the 1.8D the 1.8G is bigger but lighter. It balances perfectly with a D3 or gripped D500 or D850. On many occasions I leave my front heavy 1.4/105E at home and take the 1.8/85G. It is just a tiny bit less perfect but it is beautiful to carry and handle.

I paid 450€ for the lens when it came out. 330€ is dirt cheap for this heavily underrated lens.

another thing. look at how skin is rendered under different light conditions. go to flickr and search for "Nikkor". Enter the group that shows pictures taken with the lens you desire.

now take a close look at skin rendering, human eyes and brains are very sensitive when it comes to skin

compare the 2.8/60D with the 2.8/60G and think about this statement: "The D is useless when it comes to portraits of women above 25"

do the same with 1.8/85D and G and you will see that also here, it is better to use the G for women ... much finer, smoother skin rendering here...

I don't think the lens is cheap any more, but the 85mm f/1.8 K-version or HC  is a great portrait lens.  Another option is the 105mm f/2.5 Sonnar-version.

Cheap portrait lenses? There are none, there are cheap lenses you can use for portraiture. All mf lenses like the ais lenses are very difficult to nail focus, to shoot wide open portrets the model will need to be at complete standstill.
For portrets i think of 85mm f/1.4 D or G, 105mm f/2DC or 1.4E, 135mm f/2DC and going longer, lenses like 180/2.8, 200/2, 300/ etc

Remind you that the famous Steve McCurry portrait of the Afghan girl was shot with a filmcamera, Nikon FM2.

I will narrow it down to 105 2.5 ai and 85 1.8g. They are both excellent, cheap and easy to find. You can start shooting. It is true that focusing the 105 is not easy but not that difficult either (with the new mirrorless and evf magnification is a breeze )
The first image in this article was shot with a d850 and the 105 2.5 ai and I´m know for my lack of skill with manual lenses:

No experience with any of them. The Samyang T1.5 is probably the same as the Samyang f/1.4 but measured in T-stops instead of F-stops, with the barrel designed for video. All are manual focus, and with the fast aperture the DoF will be very narrow, very difficult to nail focus unless the subject is static.

Unless you really need the extra speed, I think the AFS 85/1.8 is a better option - AF will give you a far high percentage of keepers.

The D850 works well with manual lenses for landscapes, product shots and other subjects which stay still, not so practical for moving subjects unless you are willing to accept a lot of mis-focused shots.

I tried my Nikkor-Q-C 135/3.5 (non-AI) for a quick test at full aperture for sharpness and bokeh on my D5200 body.
D5200 has no aperture ring so non-AI lenses can be mounted. It is a shame that the higher level DSLRs has a plastic aperture ring and not a metal ring like on a F3, F4 with the possibility to lock-up the small tap so non-AI lenses can be mounted.

I think the lens is quite good a full aperture showing a small amount of purple fringe which disappears when lens is stopped down and also sharpness improves. I think lens at full aperture is sharp enough for portraits.
Bokeh is as expected very nice and soft at full aperture.

This may be the cheapest Nikon prime portraits lens (single coated version is probably a bit cheaper). This lens has "personality". I also like the blue color of the coating on the single coated version.....may be reason enough to get one…...some day :-)

There is a 100% crop of the brick building so sharpness and CA can be evaluated.

I owned the 85 f1,8 AF-D for a short while (about 3 years) and sold it because it rendered backgrounds with double lines in many situations where the 85 f1,4 AF-D did not. AF on the f1,8 lens is very fast, and somewhat accurate. AF on the f1,4 lens is significantly slower. About as quick as the current AF-S 85 f1,8 lens.

I handled the Samyang 85mm f1,4 on a Nikon D800.
-The lens did not feel as solid as the 85 f1,4 Ai-S which I kind of find very important in a manual focus lens
-The lens did render very much like the 85 f1,4 AF-D suggesting it is slightly less sharp then the Ai-S version
-If you really feel certain manual focus is exactly your thing, go for it. If not, buy the 85 f1,8 AF-S as many before me suggested, or..

... wait until you can afford the 105 f1,4 and buy that. I never used that one, so I can not say whether it rocks your boat

You can also always buy a Canon and the 85 f1,2. That way you are exactly at the spot where you place your benchmark.

Personally I think looking for a cheap portrait lens involves one thing more then anything else. Pick up your camera, use what you have and take pictures. Good photographers were never limited by their equipment. If they were limited by anything, it was by not being in the right spot at the right time.

If you are interested in using old lenses, the Df has an aperture flip tab so you can use pre-AI lenses. However, the Z series is even better as you have better ways to focus (viewfinder magnification, focus peaking) and in body stabilization which makes it possible to shoot in very poor lighting conditions. Because the FTZ adapter does not have an aperture tab, you won’t get f/stop information in your EXIF files, but I never look at that after the fact anyway.

For me personally the Nikon F4 F4s etc. was the best camera of all times... extremly robust and with a lot of robust manual features... and very good looking like the classical  Jaguar E
When I compare the rather delicate and sensitive D850 with the extremely stable and robust Nikon F4s - with its sturdy rubberized knurled wheels and controls... oh my god what a descent...  :'(

Therefore I have a problem with converted non Ai lenses like the Nikkor-Q-C 135/3.5 (non-AI) (Bokeh seems to be great)
If the conversion is not perfekt, it can destroy the very sensitive F-FO base plate ceramic unit of the D850

In this thread I got more than enough useful technical hints and now I wait until there is a good chance to buy one of the mentioned lenses...

Changing back to Canon is no option. (By the way: The Nikon 105mm 1.4 ED is better than the Canon 85mm 1.2 II )

In the meantime I use - as you wisely remarked - my existing equipment - especially my wonderful Zeiss Milvus 35mm 1.4 or my Nikon 50mm 1.8G for portraits...  ;)

The Zeiss 35mm Milvus 1.4 is ideal and ultimative lens for environmental portraits;
the Nikkor 105mm 1.4 ED would be the ideal lens for headshots etc.

I have some photo-project-ideas, where I need both to characterize the person (environmental study and face study)

Some photos (also portraits) are in THIS thread...

Very nice images. The D850 is good in "available light" situations......

My F4 was also my main film camera for many years......it has been sitting on the shelf....with 85/1.4 attached.
I used the 85/1.4 AFD on F4.....but never used it on my D5200......but it looks good on a F4.....so in moment only for display.

Shot at 3.5.........I can see know......blur circles are also quite circular......

Yes, shot at f3,5. I use most of my lenses wide open only because of the ugly shape the aperture takes when stopping down Ai, Ai-S and older manual Nikkor lenses.

There are just a few exceptions there. The 13,5cm f4 I recently bought has a round aperture at nearly every setting. The 85mm f2,8 PC Nikkor does a good job at keeping the aperture circular when changing settings. There are a few others too. But I do not own many of those

Yes, it is easier to use many aperture blades when aperture does not have to stop down during exposure.....so lenses with pre-set aperture often has this "rounded" feature.
Some lenses with 9 rounded blades can do it quite well.....but not perfect.

Actually, my girlfriends Sigma Art 135 f1,8 has 9 rounded blades and that aperture closes almost as neatly as the one on the 13,5cm f4. At least up to f5,6. From there on the 15 blades iris has an advantage again

As I have said before: I sold all Ai/Ai-s Nikkors.

I used some Nikkors (always adapted on digital Canon 5D I/II/III or analogue Nikons): My 'Problem' are the 46 MP of the D850...

Micro Nikkor Auto 55mm 3.5 (adapted on 22MP Canon really great surreal sharpness and good Bokeh; optical on 46MP D850 not bad but not so good as on 22MP - Bad Ai-Adaption destroyd some Parts of my D850)
Micro Nikkor 105mm f/4 (great cheap Makro on Canon 5D )
Micro Nikkor 55mm 2.8 Ai-s (good allrounder on 5D)
AF Micro Nikkor 55mm 2.8 Ai-s
Nikon 105, f/2.5 Ai/Ais (Ais Version of my lenses was optical better; Bokeh not perfect)
Nikon 105mm f/1.8 Ai-s (for me on 5D better than the 2.5 Version; Bokeh better...)
Nikon 50mm Ai-S 1.8 (my Version was bad on Canon)
Nikon 85mm 1.4 Ai-s (second best Portrait lens with Canon 5D MK 2)
Nikon 180mm 2.8 ED (Ai-S) (great Bokeh and great colors on 22 MP; for D850 perhaps not ideal without VR...)
AF Nikkor 180 mm 1:2,8D IF-ED (older Ai-s ED was optical better for me on 5D MK 2)
+++

Canon 85mm 1.2 II (better than all mentioned Nikkors; NOT better than the new Nikkor 105mm 1.4)
Zeiss Distagon 35mm 1.4 (better than all Nikkors)
Zeiss Milvus 35mm 1.4 (best manual 35mm; perfect Bokeh, Rendering and Sharpness; close-up limit 30cm therefore also great atmosheric images in the middle close-up range; great for portraits that include the living and working environment )
Zeiss Makroplanar 100mm 2.0 (ZE on Canon 22MP) for me better than all above mentioned Nikon Makros (Colors, Sharpness, Universality, 3D Effekt..., Bokeh etc.)

And yes - I also had a lot fun with searching the ultimative Film-developer-Kombination, which I never found...  :'(

So many choices for Nikon shooters ! My opinion on a few ones I had (or have kept*)
1,8/85K Ai-modified*: a bit soft wide open and prone to flare; getting better at 2,8 and really (very) good from 4-5,6 to 11. Nice handling, long and precise focus throw.
2/85: even softer (until 5,6-8) and somehow nervous bokeh. I had the Ais. Good at medium apertures and very good handling (compact as a 50mm) but not so good contrast, nor bokeh.
2,5/105 P, P-C* or Ai/Ais: better bokeh and very good from 4. I had a few of them, always good or very good. Bokeh can be very good (depends on what is behind the subject)...
1,4/85 Ais: nice contrast from 2-2,8 but a bit soft at 1,4-2
1,4/85AFD*: my preferred 85, very good wide ope (1,4-4), very creamy bokeh...alas a bit CA on highlights at 1,4 until 2,8 (IF design). Not too bulky, good
2/105 AFD-DC*: also a very good performer; perhaps a bit better bokeh than 2,5/105 (but CA on highlights, like 1,4/85AFD)

1,4/85G and 105E AFS: not yet tried, 105 seems a bit bulky (but not so compared to the Sigma !); very good advices and opinions here on NG and on many blogs/ forums...

Some pictures: on Df: 1)  2,5/105 P-C at f:4; 2)  2,5/105 P-C at f:5,6 (close);3) 3,5/135 Ai at f:3,5; 4) 3,5/135 Ai at f:4 cropped; On D700: 5) 2/105DC at 2,8; 6) 2/105 DC at 3,2

I wonder if you might be better off with a Z6 if you are doing a lot of macro work and like to use other lenses. It gives a lot more flexibility to adapt lenses. The lenses for the Z cameras are quite good. Some would say better than the nikkor which came before.

No mention of the 70, 80-200mm f/2.8 zooms.
Title: Re: Best cheap Portrait Lens for Nikon D850
Post by: the solitaire on March 20, 2020, 18:03:36
Fons, for someone as critical on lens performance as F4 fan here, I did not mention the zooms because they do really lack compared to the primes.

I found the 80-200 f4 Ai-S good on the D800, but resolution stays behind compared to the primes listed here. I can take a perfectly sharp photo, but at 100% magnification it still seems slightly soft.

I have not tried the 70-200 f4, but that would be the first candidate to meet the criteria listed.

The 80-200 f2,8 AF and AF-D and AF-D two ring are not exactly sharp wide open. They are T3,5 wide open though. I found bokeh of the 135 f3,5 more pleasing then that of the AF and AF-D lenses, and even that does not seem to satisfy our OP here.

As for the 70-200's. I always find them a mixed bag. Best bokeh can be had at closer range, but exactly that is where the VRII version acts more like a 135mm then a 200mm.

So for the "I want a 85 f1,2 for Nikon" crowd, I figured the zooms didn't really need to be mentioned. That said, the zooms perform excellent on D3's, D4's and Df's and I sold my perfectly sharp 200mm f4 Nikkor-Q.C in favor of the 80-200 f4 Ai-S because I could not discern enough of a difference between the two to keep both

I wonder if you can generalize that all Nikkor-Q's has nice bokeh…..may not be the sharpest lenses…….but sharp enough…..especially in the center which is fine for portraits.
Tessars also render nice "out of focus" …..as far as I remember…...

I don’t know what actually searching for ;)
I did some testing with my D750 and the 80-200 2.8AF compared with the 85 1.8 G  and the results were more pleasant with the zoom just because of the less sharpness of the zoom
With the zoom I noticed that shooting in 135-140 mm f 5.6  the final result was very good in terms of limited depth of field
The only issue is that zoom  lens physical dimension is a little scary for the others except the photographer

Actually the 80-200mm AF-S 2.8 could do the job for sure.

It has the AF speed and accuracy also plenty sharp and bokeh is great.

Thinking VR is needed, surely that is a mistake, the D850 needs a fast shutter speed to avoid motion blur, that can not be ignored if any consistentensy is needed.

The jump from F4 with film to D850 is huge!

Sorry to hear your trouble with badly AI modified lenses, must have been very badly done  :o

The 80-200 AF-S f2,8 is the only one I have not tried. At the time I bought my AF-D I found the price of the AF-S prohibiting. On the D300 and D3 the AF-D f2,8 zoom performed excellent. On the D800, it was sharp up until about the 170mm setting of the zoom ring. From there on it was not sharp wide open. It was at f4 again.

As for badly modified non-Ai lenses, fortunately I never had issues with that because I modified my own lenses and made sure to remove enough material to prevent pressure or rubbing.

I seriously doubt that, at least from Nikon's side. In fact, they are at a crossroads now where they can realise their dreams of dropping support for a whole first generation of AF technology relying on mechanical connections. They really want "E" technology to replace the former "D"/"S" approaches.

Any such third-party adapter would require a built-in focusing motor, a screwdriver linkage,  plus the control electronics to emulate  AFS seen from the camera's side. Power must be drawn from the camera as well.  The adapter would definitively be more chunky and awkward than any current FTZ-type.

Ad A.
My intended photo-project would be (in-room) portraiture in available light:  a big/long 80-200 2.8 would not be the right lens for that... (too big, not fast enough etc.)
With my Zeiss 35mm 1.4 I need (inhouse, available light) minimum 1/160 sec. with the D850 to avoid blur; with an 80-200 I would need min. 1/500 with 2.8...
I discussed this in my other thread on NikonGear:
https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=9163.0
With the D850 I have to optimize my techniques of shooting (Frank Fremerys tip: https://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/long-exposure-handhelds/introduction.html )

Ad B.
My F4-time is long ago; I come from 22MP Canon 5D MK 3;   but even this jump seems to be big.

No. (other cam sold) :)

I made some  tests with some little objects (Coins); my more or less subjective impression was, that the results (with Micro Nikkor Auto 55mm 3.5 non Ai) with the former 22MP Canon 5D MK 3 (with Adapter) were better/sharper than with the D850
But after some tests the Ai modified lens destroyed the very sensitive F-FO base plate ceramic unit of my new D850 ( the pressure on the bayonet was to high ) ; after this I will never use a modified non Ai-Lens on this cam...

I wonder if a DX sensor is better to use with old lenses as only center part of lens is used. They seems to be able to deliver pixel sharpness on my D5200. I am quite sure a 55/3.5 micro can do that and maybe also on a CX sensor. I guess 24 MP DX sensor has higher pixel density than a 45 MP FX. And a 20 MP CX sensor has much higher pixel density…...without calculation I would guess a FX sensor with CX density would be like +100 MP.

I actually chose the Z6 at first, but then decided to go for the D850, because I really wanted the Zeiss Milvus 35mm 1.4 and the Nikkor 14-24mm; both lenses are not very ergonomic with the Z6 AND the FTZ adapter.

But surely: for the use of cheaper older lenses, the Z6 would be better.

I made a test shot using the Micro 55/3.5 (old Nippon Kogaku type....also AI'ed….but that does not matter on a D5200 body). I had a 50 cent coin I used to see how it looked on a D5200 24 MP DX sensor. Also at f8. I can see the smaller sensor gives a bit more DOF as the paper as background is a bit more defined. Maybe this can have something to do with perceived sharpness using a smaller sensor?
It is difficult with lightning to get the coin look good and be able to see most possible details…..something where my image could improve. There is a 100% crop also. The larger and more modern sensor on D850 has more dynamic range....so finer tone graduation.

Images sharpen up a bit when lens is stopped down but center sharpness fine enough for portraits. I think I like the lens. It seems to be a sharp lens when I look at the images at 100%.

I really liked that 135 f3,5 Nikkor-Q.C for the time I owned it.
In the end, the 80-200 f4 Ai-S gave me much the same rendering I got from the 135 f3,5 so I sold it.

Colors with the Zeiss are often a little bit too 'punchy' for portraiture, but here it seems ok

Seems you don't need a cheap Nikkor portrait lens.....if you still have the macro Planar. I guess you can get an adapter for the lens....

I have sold everything with Canon Bayonet (also the Makroplanar (ZE); and before  I have sold all old Nikkors  :-\

I am not a lens collector but I always look for the best lenses in a focal length class that I can afford. I know photographers who have 10 different 35mm lenses (crazy!) I look for exactly ONE 35mm lens, but that should be one of the best. Collecting makes no sense for me; but sometimes there are specialists who really need different 35mm lenses... (I am not)
BUT: Once you have photographed with a top lens, you no longer like the image effect of the less good lenses ... Then you always need the best again...

Sometimes there are cheap jewels (for 22 MP at least) but for the D850 only the very best lenses seem to be good enough.

From the Nikkors you had on your lens it seems you have experience with a lot of Nikkors......like the 105/2.5.
In the beginning I thought you was a previous Canon user and had not much knowledge of Nikkors.....but I wondered why your "nickname" is f4-fan.....but it could also be the aperture f4 :-)
Later I understood. During the years I have become somewhat a collector but lenses I have used and did not like I have sold again like the Nikkor AIS 15/3.5, AFD 18/2.8, Nikkor-H 300/4.5 ….and a few others….

I was always a Nikon 'fanboy' (Especially the Nikon F4s and the digital pro cams), but the first digital full format cameras and all pro cams from Nikon were always too expensive for me: That's why I started with the Canon 5D MK 1, then MK 2, MK 3 and adapted many Nikkore. Only recently the price of the D850 dropped ((new net below 1800,-) and that's when I bought it together with the great Zeiss Milvus 35mm 1.4 and the 14-24.

Here an example with a great Portrait-Nikkor

55/3.5 Bokeh seems very good…..and also 50/1.8.....on DX sensor 50mm can be used as portrait lens...….

Compared with the Zeiss Milvus / Distagon the Bokeh and rendering of the AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1.8 G are not really great

Here are 2 examples of IMHO great rendering of the Zeiss Distagon:

Ahhh. Finally a breath of fresh air on this site with a beautiful portrait of Leah.

A bit sick and tired of lame flowers and manholes and stupid buildings and nonsensical pictures for my taste.

Please indulge in your pipe organs and whatnot as it is well understood that back slapping is only allowed and photography of "real" women is not desirable here!

But it is not the 1st one (BW portrait) that is shot with 135/3.5 wide open?      …...it looks a bit too sharp…...the middle one looks more like the 135/3.5 wide open?
But nice pictures anyway…….

Too lazy to hunt too far into the archives right now, but for full frame portraits, at least indoors, how about the luscious old 85/1.8?  The original manual one, that would  need conversion to AI.  Not such a convenient size for me these days on DX, especially since I got the 85/2.8 Micro, but I loved this one on an F.

The AI/AIS 135/3.5 is sharp wide open. The trick is to focus it accurately.

On the BW portrait, I can't see any signs of polygonal blurs in the background, they look nicely rounded (it is hard to tell though), which suggests the lens was wide open. My guess is this one was shot with the 105/2.5 anyway, due to the soft way the background is rendered.

On the middle one, the middle person (shoulder) is sharp, the other two look a little soft because they are in front or behind the focus plane (DoF too small). My guess is this was shot with the 135/3.5 as the background bokeh is not as smooth as the 105/2.5.

I'd say the last was shot with the 85/1.8 as the field of view looks wider.

Speaking of the old 85mm f1.8 K: The first image I took at the border of South Africa and Zimbabwe back in 1987, on Kodachrome with a Nikon F2. The second image, a colleague took of me about 10 years ago in the old msnbc.com newsroom, with the same camera and lens and Kodacolor 400.

With my copy of the 135/3.5 Ai, there is marked improvement going from wide open to f/4. A certain amount of haze disappears and the clarity of the image jumps up a notch.  Amazing that such a small change in aperture makes such a easily seen difference!

It's hard to find old images scanned from film, and harder yet to remember what lenses I was using, but here's one I know was done with F and 85/1.8H. Casual snap and low res scan, but I think it did a pretty good capture.  That's my mother in law, at around 90.  She made it to 99. Fled Cuba in 1962 with four kids to reunite with husband who had defected.  Under the exterior tough as nails.

I do own, and use, all versions of the 105/2.5, from the early 10.5cm f/2.5 Rangefinder model up and including the 105/2.5 AIS. I warmly recommend the 105/2.5 AI version as the best of them all.

Today I bought a 105/2.5 AI in a very good condition with the metal lens hood for 165,- EUR.
Handling (focussing) with the D850 ist rather easy and perfectly soft. Tomorrow I will shoot some portraits...

I bought another lens (Zoom Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5) for testing purpose. But I have to admit that this lens is not so well suited for the D850 and I have to sell it again.

As I mentioned before I bought the Nikon 105mm f/2.5 Ai.

I tested it with the D850: Sharpness was OK, but the bokeh is not outstanding for me; therefore I had to get a faster lens:

I quickly sold the 105mm again and bought the lens from a colleague that had impressed me earlier:

Nikon 85mm f/1.4 Ai-s

And I think that I have found THE classic that will stay with me:

The following product photos were taken with the not very popular Nikon AF-Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.8, which I recently bought in mint condition for 80 EUR: It seems to harmonize very well with the D850.

1. Not enough money
2. Looking for inexpensive lens alternatives that can still do the job (static portraits) satisfactorily (while I'm saving on the expensive portrait lens)

I have bought the Nikon 85mmm Ai-S f/1.4 for 1/5 of the price of a more 'adequate' lens (f.i. the 105mm 1.4) and it does the job very well. Colors, rendering, bokeh and sharpness are good from 1.4-2.0 and even excellent from f/2.8... :

For human faces (and vanity), often a 'less-than-excellent' lens might be desirable.  I have an 85/1.8 K/Ai that's already too "sharp" sometimes.

You are right, and therefore I don't like (105mm) Makros (Zeiss Makroplanar etc.) for portraiture. The - for me - best portraits are seldom ultrasharp.

For me the most desired portraiture-look (strong unsharpness in the background / 'old-style medium-format-Bokeh' ...) needs either at least 85mm/105mm f/1.4/1.2 (135mm f/2; 200mm f/2.8/2.0) OR true analog medium format (s. the photos of Stephan vanFleteren: https://www.stephanvanfleteren.com/artists [he often uses an old analogue Hasselblad]

But to make a sharp eye/face softer is easy, but to make a really unsharp face/eye sharp is impossible:

For human faces (and vanity), often a 'less-than-excellent' lens might be desirable.  I have an 85/1.8 K/Ai that's already too "sharp" sometimes.
For that reason I prefer 80-200 af D 2.8 instead of 85 1.8 G

Sometimes this desirability might be true also for camera-Sensor resolution- the D850 can do portraits but is not
always the optimal choice

Some high pass filtering + red filter (simulated) will do the job, if sharpness or microcontrast is deemed excessive.
