Title: 1001 Nights #65

I recently read this interesting story, and then realized there had been an earlier Nikon zoom lens of similar zoom and aperure range developed some years before the G model. All I know is that the earlier lens is physically bigger, according to Roland's published lens records.  It is not mentioned in story #65, so am I correct in assuming the D model is totally unrelated to the later G model?

Yes, very different. The Photosynthesis page on Specifications ( http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/specs.html#28-xx )shows the 28-200mm D lens had 16 elements in 13 groups, weighed 520 grams and had a filter size of 72mm.  The G lens had 12 elements in 11 groups, weighed 360 grams and had a filter size of 62mm.  A real masterpeice of optical design by Sato-san.

Netr, thank you for your de-mazing comments.  I only knew of the different filter size, so you have cleared my horizon considerably.  Wow, what a weight difference. I wonder if there was also a manual focus model, or if the G model can also deliver good manual focus results.
