I wish the theme options included a dark grey background theme with white text.
All of the available theme options I have tried have only bright white background with black text which is hard on my eyes and makes it hard to fully enjoy the wonderful photographs posted here.

I agree that it'd be nice to have a dark gray or black field option.

Well, there is such a theme now ....
Go to Profile > Modify profile > Look and Layout > Current Theme > Change > (select theme UX)

I tried and it looks nice and sleek but came back. I need my yellow on NG :)

Thanks Birna!
It is a lot easier on my eyes and the uploaded pictures look much better.
All that is left to do is update the new theme with the Nikon Gear Logo, Menu, etc.

I know. I do miss the helping hand of our esteemed boffin, Andrea. A little reluctant to move too much of the internals of NG on my own. However, I look into this to see whether the required changes are obvious even to my non-specialist eyes.

I used the dark theme for a few forum visits. It needs improvement. Viewing on a laptop, blue-colored writing and the small, dark 'New' button are nearly invisible against the black field. I'm thinking that a dark gray would be better than the black or near-black surround. Check out the Fred Miranda forums to see dark gray in action.

I agree. This was a just a "shot in the dark" (literally). The SMF sites hold plenty of themes. If one finds something better, just drop me a PM and I'll install it.
My hands are tied up by work related commitments at present, plus the added efforts to procure the new server. So cannot do much more than I outlined above, for now.

The dark mode, something like the UI of a photo editing software without colorful icons, would be nice. I prefer 18%-ish gray to black.
I'm not in a hurry, though.

Agree, no hurry here.
