Title: 300mm 2.8 vrII, af in infrared
Post by: golunvolo on September 24, 2019, 18:19:24
The ir modified d200 I bought right here had de af calibrated to work with the 18-70mm 3,5-4,5G dx. It does work specially since I usually use it at f8ish.. Yesterday I was trying the big 300 in a gimbal and gave the combo a chance. To my surprise, the af was spot on even fully open at virtually any distance.
A few, fully open, minimal pp, from closest to farthest.

One has so much detail it is heavier than the web will allow

One extra panning at f5.6. The Neewer gimbal does work too.

That the longer Nikkors do well in IR is a common experience. Good to see this version of the 300 join the IR-capable arsenal, though. Images do look very sharp and free of vignetting and hot spots.

I agree and thanks  :)

What really surprised me was the ability to get precise autofocus from the d200 with this lens with no further adjustments. Will see if I can get advantage of the combo!

Nice results, I have never had problems with focus on my 720nm converted D200.  The previous owner had it converted from a surplus D200 which he had.  He had many issues initially with inaccurate focus, manual and AF.  Eventually the problems were resolved by ACS who did the conversion.  I'm told they can be easy or hard, some just work, others are a pig to get right, so if yours is good, as it seems to be, then it's a blessing.

I have tried all my lenses, the best seem to be the 18-35AF and the 18-105VR which I now keep exclusively for IR duties.  It doesn't get as much use as it should.  :(

Hi!

It is great to see, that you like the D200 so much, which you got from me in sept. 2017... !
And that it is not just "reduced" to the little DX-lens...

Keep on working!

Christian

Thanks Robert. Yes, I try different combinations and get whatever comes as "per combo". Birna also pointed out that any change in camera, filter, lens... is a new mistery. Didn't know that even the same camera model can behave so differently. Well I'm lucky :)
Yes Christian, that's the one! Still enjoying it :)
