After the recent trip to Latvia, Ruth and I sought shelter on a remote island off the southern coast. Remote as in not having internet or phone access ,which is an increasing rarity these days. However we could not escape being followed closely by a TV film crew :( who decided I was an interesting object. They stayed on the island for several days.
I paid back by shooting them in IR ...
-
Great picture, Birna, and great "micro contrast", too. Maybe the NikonGear community wants to know your lens in use caused by, in my opinion, great definition? Thanks!

It was snapped with the current IR "standard" setup, i.e. Nikon D5300 (IR-modified, 720nm filter inside) and the AFS 18-140 Nikkor. I was bored and just played around with the image.

Frank, I also strongly believe that a real opportinity is being lost by not developing and deploying Thorium reactors. And we need to do so very quickly indeed.
Also a 10,000% tax on all palm oil products might help slow down the destruction of the planets lungs - the forests - especially the rain forests.
But what does an old man like me know? Nothing it seems.

J Russel Smith wrote "Tree Crops ... a permanent agriculture" in the 1950ies. Next to no better way pumping down Green Houses Gases into the soil than PERENNIALS.
All of our food production should be bases on perennials: forage, fruit, seeds, funghi ... The main cause for Global heating is that there is not enough Photosynthesis on our farms, often less than a quarter of what a natural ecosystem would do. Plus the old carbon in the soils is pumped out, not only a coal, oil, gas but also as land is abused by stupid unsustainable agriculture that is not even profitable:

Birna, how do you find those Mitsutoyo objective lenses you, Bob and others are commonly using these days? Is the venerable Macro Nikkor no more a must-have for the purpose?
-
Akira, the Mitutoyo objectives are really good. Plus they allow a very decent working distance despite their high magnifications. However they are "infinity corrected" thus must be combined with another optical component to focus, and of course the magnification for all intents and purposes is fixed. I have the 5X and 10X Mitutoyo objectives.
I also use some Olympus macro lenses made for the OM system, 20/2 and 38/2, the latter being ruggedised to allow it being brought into the field. The vintage Macro Nikkors see some use, too. Mostly the 65mm f/4.5, on occasion the 35/4.5 Macro-Nikkor.
This season I have used the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 Ultra-Macro lens on a regular basis as it exhibits good quality, and is small thus making less demand for an extended support structure. It's not perfect, but nifty for my purposes and the 2.5-5X magnification range is spot on for most of my subjects. Putting a CPU inside helps secure EXIF data which is helpful for fine-tuning the setup.

I read somewhere, 1 ton of thorium will generate as much electricity as 3.5 million tons of coal. True?
It is roughly a 1:1 Million relation. True. Basic physics: the energy released is the binding energy. Nuclear binding forces are several orders of magnitude greater than molecular binding forces. C + O2 contains more energy than CO2. Thorium contains more energy than its fission products.
A handful of Thorium powers the whole life span of a European with a total energy consumption of 200 kWh per day as avarage. Total Energy consumption means: Cooling, Heating, Building, Food and all other consumption, Production, Electricity, Mining, all energy use a person causes. I reported earlier about the use of the Mitutoyo objectives on my various Nikon Multiphot units.
From today's shooting of Elatine triandra Three-stamened Waterwort. A plant so small even the great Linnaeus himself didn't observe and describe it :)
Firstly an overview of the plant at 10.4X magnification. Thus the frame spans approx. 3.5mm (!). The opened flower is 1.2mm across, the rosy red buds about 0.6mm. The 100% crop shows part of the flower with a stamen dusted with pollen grains -- the anther is less than 0.1mm wise and the filament itself about 0.05mm. A human hair is approx. 0.15mm to indicate the scale at with we are operating ....
10X/0.28 Mitutoyo, Raynox DCR-150, Nikon D810, about 75 frames using Stackshot and Zerene Stacker. By the way, Zerene does not like these objects with reflective cell surfaces and partly hyaline details. Not at all.

A section of Birna's "garden". Boxes with wet, dripping plant material everywhere. Thoroughly enjoyable -- for me, at least :) Lots of photo opportunities as well.
This photo shows nearly twenty - 20 - identifiable aquatic species. Amongst them a knotweed (Persicaria foliosa) endemic to Fennoscandia, which is a biological rarity in itself as this part of the world saw deep glaciation 12-14.000 ago.
In the front row, to the right in the Petri dish, is the über-tiny Elatine triandra I exhibited macro photos of earlier. If you cannot see it on the overview, perhaps providing a 100% crop makes identification easier? Just follow the red arrow and there it is :) This is the very plant I posted pictures of before.
My apologies for a slight fuzziness in the photo. A hand-held morning shot before coffee!!

Still on the Norwegian-Russian border, far up North (69-70N).
The "red menace" once was a political slogan of some popularity, hopefully being laid to rest today. We have the Border Guard to help protect us. As the border itself runs in the middle of a wide river here, the military crews use a lot of well-equipped speedboats to patrol the river. Transgressing the border is a felony with stiff fines (several thousand $) and you get listed with an additional criminal record to complete the misery :(
However the vigilance of the Border Guards against any "red menace" cannot prevent immigrants from East. On this IR photo, Russia is the red landscape on the far bank of the river, in front are the military vessels, and -- wait -- in the foreground, the long floating leaves of an aquatic plant originating from Russia :) Nature remains without respect for lines drawn by humans on a map.

Slowly working up the material collected on my recent trip into the Arctic North. One of my target taxa was Hippuris lanceolata (Lance-leaved Mare's Tail), which I managed to find on several localities. One probably has to be an ardent botanist with a preference for aquatic flora to truly appreciate this Arctic species -- however, the impression of male power manifested by its tiny flowers is hard to ignore!! A section of the flowerering spike, here reproduced at 10X, shows the vigour of the male parts.
Z6, Laowa 25mm f/2.8 Ultra-Macro, stacking in Zerene. Ordinary Zerene does pretty well at high magnifications, but the algorithms deployed do not favour plant material I'm afraid. Thus lots of retouching is required later on.

The Synagogue in Tilburg
Z6 17-35/2.8
Every photographer's dream, capture a beautiful old building like this (church, I assume), and have a cancerous tumor (microwave tower?) ruin the view! Consequently, I'm not sure that saying " Good catch, John" is entirely appropriate. ;)

It was my intention to show this contrast, Carl. The extra wide angle (17mm) gives all opportunities to manipulate your background. A synagogue is a Jewish church, by the way.

Don't misunderstand, I was not negatively criticizing your image, John, the scene was well spotted. My remarks were more about the choice of locating that tower where it would detract from beauty of the synagogue view.

Let´s not forget the third contrast with the young smiling woman in movement! Can not be more opposite with the rest if you try. This makes the shot with old synagogue and the odd sci-fi like tower. Great detail and lines by the way- Looks like you close down the lens quite a bit

Jack, I love the graphics in your "traffc patterns" Great capture!

Currently on the Western coast of Norway. It is wet -- *very wet*. So many waterfalls that warning signs about yet another boring waterfall ahead can be spotted :)

Thanks Paco. Yes I needed a bit more in focus, so used the f/8
