As per suggestions in the corresponding thread on 105mm lenses, another thread dedicated to the 85mm class lenses is opened. I put the title as '80-85' as there have been a few 80mm Nikkors available over the years.
Please keep to prime lenses not zooms set to 80mm, and if you so wish technical details are not illegal to add :D
One of the 80mm Nkikkors was of course the AF 80mm f/2.8 made for the F3AF many decades ago. After some internal modification it works nicely on more modern cameras albeit without AF. I have used it mainly for IR or suchlike work, in which it excels. Manual focusing is not the strong point of this lens as the focusing collar is narrow and there is a lot of play involved (seems Nikon expected everyone to use AF only and added the manual focusing feature as an afterthought and didn't bother properly decoupling the internal AF mechanism). For stationary subjects this is not a big deal.
One of the few remaining Norwegian Stave Churches (at Eidsborg, Telemark, built around 1250 AD). Shot with the D200 IR. Thus the white ground is due to IR not snow. This church is among the smallest of its kind, but well preserved.

I should scan some stuff. The 1.8/85D was my 90% lens before the 1.4/85G came out and I switched to digital. Both are great for portraits and general purpose photography.
My current Cologne set is 100% taken with the D850 and 1.8/85G, except for the first image which is taken with my smartphone:

I used to love the old 85/1.8H on film, but haven't used it that much since I got the 2.8 PC. Not killer-diller sharp, but rather lush. This is an old shot with D3200, and since it leaves EXIF blank on manual lenses, I can't remember what the aperture was. This was a bargain lens with slight delamination of the front element at the edges, which never seemed to bother it, and a fairly decent AI milling job. A bargain at 60 bucks a dozen or so years ago, This thread reminds me that I should take it out more often.

We have some talent here, yes.
A question about the intention of the thread: is it to show the lens characteristics or the photographic skill or the editing?
For lens characteristic I cannot contribute so much, because so far I did only own two lenses of 85mm for a long time the AFS and AFD 1.8 plus I had the AFS 1.4 for a week and the AFD 1.4 for half a year and did not use it much, because I did really hate the sound of its screw driver AF.

Richard, thank you very much for the confirmation! Yes, Sauter! Apparently, the outlook of the shop hasn't really been changed, although the shops (or the buildings) on both sides of Sauter look different from the way it was 30+ years ago.
And thank you for the image. I happily downloaded!

This thread is making me want to jump on an AF-S 85 1.8, but it would be mounted on my D7200 since I don't own an FX body.
-
Sorry, I am not able to post anything taken with my old well-forgotten 80/2.8 Nikkor AF, on Nikon F3AF. As well as 200mm wonder. No digital files, and no any reliable way to convert to them. Somebodies experience will be greatly appreciated! THX! LZ
-
If you think of the 200/3.5 ED-IF for the F3AF, it's a breeze to make it acceptable to modern cameras. Just snip off the contact print lane going into the lens. Same procedure goes for the 80/2.8 AF.
The pin layout on these old AF lenses is incompatible with modern circuits and one runs the risk of short-circuiting the camerera battery or damage the camera innards. When the CPU of these lenses is removed or inactivated as described above, they work both as any manual focus lens.
-

The 1.8/85G is a breeze to use on the D500. The 7200 should be a great experience too and you can later use it on FX too
-
Thank you, Birna! Unfortunately, I've sold all of F3AF gears way before digital era. But I still keeping the negatives and slides, so, it was my question for - how to convert them to regular today's files. Even the best drums 4-5 years ago did not delivered any acceptable result. Yes, I agree on the way to convert those old AF lenses - it was what I've done to the 28 lens inside that system, to try on F4, but this particular lens was not that good. Thank you! LZ
-

I am currently copying my fathers old slides from the 1960's I have been using my new D800 with the 55mm Micro but I would have thought with a shorter lens perhaps a 28mm crc, you would get very acceptable results. I am extremely pleased with my results, I am taking five bracketed exposures of each slide and it is allowing me to copy slides which were pretty under exposed revealing much of the shadow detail. Way better than scanning them and faster too.

Way better than scanning them and faster too.
. Sorry, Klaus! You know, Seapy, even drum scanner, which delivered about 20X more half-tones and way better color and resolution, is not enough for quality copy to post here! It is interesting to post all of potential of this old 80/2.8 AF Nikkor, but impossible, so far... I am really sorry! LZ

Hello! For this image I used the "old" AF-Nikkor 80mm f2.8, originally made for the Nikon F3AF camera, back in the eighties. This is really a very sharp lens. Image is taken with Nikon D3X at aperture f16.

Nikon D810 + Nikon 85mm PC-E lens. I use this lens for portrait and product photography. Especially when stacking is not really an option, this lens is very useful. Each time, the lens amazes me with the way it renders colors and with its sharpness.

Agree this lens is wonderfully sharp. A pity its manual focusing is so imprecise as the AF cannot be used (incompatible with anything other than F3AF). Its original CPU is incompatible as well, but can and should be swapped out for a more modern version.
These days I mainly use the 80/2.8 for IR.

Thank you,
Yes, I used a Godox Ad600Pro with a large soft box and an AD200 as a second light. It is setup that I can easily take with me to a location

I admire those who are able to take photos of subjects like this at full aperture and get a beautiful image. In my attempts with a very narrow DoF, usually the picture just ends up looking out of focus, the sharp zone not enough to make the image hold together.

Thanks for noting the actual lens ID, I mislabelled the photo (now corrected).
The D3S is the generation model of choice for me, I still have at least one floating around but [too] rarely use it. I tried a full-spectrum conversion of the D3 that failed due to the internal shutter-LED monitor, and hence sold off the camera.

I like this high-ISO look, you are a past master of it. Also the railroad tracks shot is [presumably] a lovely demo of what is accomplished with the tilt function. Many great 80/85 photos here.

Sometimes Norwegian authorities surprise us. For example, by putting up megalithic monuments along roads crossing the mountain backbone of Norway. Still no idea why they do this other than making a "window" into the landscape view??
85mm f/2.8 PC-Nikkor on a D2X, B+W 403 filter. Neither UV nor IR, but nice nevertheless. The "window" monument itself is > 2m tall and must weigh tons. One of the glaciers in Jotunheimen, Smørstabbreen, is seen through the forced viewpoint.

Just sitting in a hotel room in Moscow when writing this. I`m also a lover of the 85mm Nikkor lenses. If you have the NPCI (Nikon Photo Contest International) calendar from 2000, then you can see a picture taken by me (august image 2000) in that calendar. The image is taken from a bridge with Nikon FA and Nikkor 85mm f/2 on apertude f/5.6. Please see the name of the photographer down to right and also on the calerndar`s last page where all the thirteen images (including the front page) is shown. See you!

I have a similar shot taken @28 mm and FF (not shown here: it would be OT) in Aug.2018. My POV is a little more to the right, the perspective is different. You can see it in the Objet trouvé theme. I have been wondering too on the meaning of such a heavy "frame" in that particular context. It gave me the same feeling when I saw the Snøhetta Viewpoint (Dovrefjell): An artificially superimposed concept, adding nothing (instead removing ) to your own experience. Better walking around and finding more inspiration without some "artist" giving preconfectioned hints.
Nonetheless, like Birna I have taken a few pictures around the monolith... Maybe the "artist" would say Mission Accomplished!
Ciao from Massimo

Ah that 85/1.4 AF-D and those images :)

I made a small mistake - the first one is taken by another 85 - 1.8 D :-)
And I have so many portraits taken with 1.4 - as I used it a lot for my "100 strangers" series on Flickr.

Airy, I would not touch those apples, but I would love to taste that cheese. :-)

That cheese is more stinky than you could imagine. "Revolting" comes to mind.
Next, a shot at f/1.6 and we'll go on stopping down. D700, 2000 ISO, once in a while I needed a "fast" lens.
-
Hmm, here in Czech we have also some "strong" cheeses. Some I can eat and actually like, some are too much for me. :-)

Here, the "Maroilles" smells like dog shit when warm. Still deemed acceptable. But the "Vieux Lille" smells like a morgue after 24h power outage.

What a great portrait, Petr. Where was it taken?
-
Thank you, Jim.
Even though it looks like some oriental country, I took it in the middle of Europe in Czech and the girl is my daughter
She played with towel. :)
But there is a chance that you feel some "eastern traits" and if so, then you are right. She is half as my wife is Japanese.

Nice, Petr! My daughters are pretty much grown up (either married or in college) so they are not readily at hand for portraits, sadly. Enjoy it while you can!

Beautiful portrait Petr.

At a completely different end of things, and stuck at home not only with Covid isolation but killer sciatica, I was reminded that some years ago I got an 85/2.8D Micro lens used, in part due to Birna's long ago review. A bit long for DX, and not very handy to use hand held, but every year around this time I go out and try to bag the unattainable but challenging fall staghorn sumac. One of these days I'll get it right. Today wasn't it, but I'll throw one in anyway.
