November 1. Dusk of dragon's fire. D750 with 50/1.8G, needless to say. :)

Good luck with your panels Fons. I put in a 5kW system here in Melbourne five years ago. With Australia's now privatised electricity system and our soaring electricity prices, my panels have long since paid themselves off. May put in batteries if battery prices fall as sharply as the panel prices have.

Our installation will deliver electricity at present consumption, but expected break-even point on the investment will be more than 5 years calculated at the current price level.

today by the river. the concrete structure in the back is being demolished. I hope to take the same perspective in a few years with the next building at the site

The panel prices went down worldwide because of Angela Merkel. For us Germans it was a pricey investment because we do not have a lot of sun in our country. We started early and financed all R&D with tax payers money and with our electricity bills. All in all the state subsidies for the inefficient sun & wind strategy in sun & wind poor Germany are planned to sum up to 2000 Billion Euros. The world can thank or curse Merkel for bringing the prices of Wind & Solar converters down. In wind & sun rich countries the profits will be high.
For Germany the added cost for electricity will be a burden for decades. For 2000 Billion we could have build 1000 big Nuclear Power Stations to Power the whole of Europe Carbon free. I would prefer Thousands of small local Thorium Power Stations of course.

Yes Frank, I agree with you.
The nuclear option is an inconvenient truth that the politicians and policy makers seem to steadfastly ignore. But what would I know about the nuclear option - only did a PhD in Physics and worked for an electricity utility for 17 years - apparently if I had studied politics and joined some ratbag political party I may have learnt all of the answers to this one and similar issues! ::)

May i remind you of for instance Chernobyl or Fukushima fatal errors were made by men.
We need to use less not more energy, in this case, while this applies to all of human life under worldly conditions. Just an observation on my part.

Tchernobyl was sabotage and we still do not know who was behind it. Tchernobyl type reactors should long be of the grid. Same goes for Fukushima, although in this case it seems to have been a fatal management error. Same goes for most reactors in India.
All these are good arguments to build better nuclear power stations and switch off the dangerous ones. Nobody died in Fukushima. 25.000 died in an Erthquake with Tsunami. Emotionally they all have been killed by Nuclear Power.
Every year 70 Million people die of air pollution caused by coal, wood, gas and oil fires. Burning fossil fuels potentially kills billions of people if we do not start to suck down CO2 from the atmosphere using photosynthesis and binding the results for a very long time (which is how fossil fuel was made in the first place):

No birds yet, disappointing for November >:( , Events all next week so had a quick run to check out the bird scene. Just a colourful fly with a7iii, 70-200 f4 at MFD handheld. The a7rii with macro 90 f2.8 would have been better suited ;) . Absolutely gigantic crop ;D
Edit:Took some digging but it is a Wasp Moth (EUCHROMIA POLYMENA ) . I'm not a Macro shooter but normally shoot interesting flying insects while waiting for birds, bored
The only image I found were all shot in Goa but appear to be found in South India and Borneo

I thought that I was following the rules listed in post #1 of this thread:
"No theme (other than what the passage of time creates), no contest implied, a maximum of one picture per day in the actual month and no more than 4 images per month for NG members, up to 30 for Supporters. You can distribute the contributions as once per week if you so prefer."
Did I misunderstand them? Did I violate the once per week alternative? If so, then my apologies are offered.
-
Carl:
one picture per day
is a rule Bjørn made because Fons and me posted more than one picture per day in the first year

Sweet photographer in action.
thank you Fons. The dog had a hard day and it is now a hard day's night?? 😂
-
Carl: you violated not the 'one picture per week' rule as that applies to non-subscribers, but the 'only one picture per day' rule for subscribers.
However, we are not out here policing our members as we believe most are responsible adults anyway. Just don't repeat.
The underlying reason for these guide lines simply is people should be concerned about submitting what they consider *the* best, and not leave the sorting task to others.

paco: looks like oil on the water...
It is the reflection of the sky, the ceiling and brick side of a building, etc... and the moving water that makes the effect -straight of camera image, landscape picture mode- but not sure if there was real oil in there. I have more images of the same place.

Apparently the bonus card is a Sony G 64GB. It certainly works.

today I helped a friend's kid with his school homework. Here is one of the results:
This is a fun image! So, were you posing in the soccer outfit for the kid?

In a neighboring town, saw this brand new lift or crane or whatever the industrial term might be. It is satisfyingly large and could easily paint the tops of the spires of our town churches when fully extended. Love these things. First saw one when an arborist brought one similar to this to our home to take down a massive tulip tree that hung above our house behaving like an increasingly malevolent force as the tree grew larger with age. So, down it came with the help of one of these contraptions.

The last few days certainly show the depth and breadth of talent shared on NikonGear!
Fons, your abstract color in "walk in the woods" is surreal
Armando, "marathon" shows the extreme fitness of the runners as being natural and easy
Daniel, "by the creek..." is a lovely pastel rendering of a child's innocent enjoyment of a beautiful moment
Paco, "Before going to bed" beautiful abstract image from the refelctions on the water
Fons, "Rainy day" soft, subtle and simply beautiful

I like the light in this image John, did you add light to the scene, or was the weaving machine already lit in this way?

Thanks Tim. These are the original lights. However, the automatic matrix-metering of the camera makes a mix, so in post I enhanced the dark and light areas a little bit.
I considered to use spot metering, but it would make the darker areas black.

If I move, I´ll take the windows with me. City lines
judging from the appearence of the left side the house could be destined to be demolished. If that is the case, taking out the windows is normal practice. In fact, the idea of recycling leads to deconstruction work as sophisticated as construction in Germany. All parts of a building are separated and brought to different recycling places for reuse or landfill or transformation...

Shot with the Z7+35/1.8S combo yesterday afternoon, whilst driving in Ruth's electric Kia to a meeting in Oslo. The windscreen is dirty as usual this time of the year, as people have started using studded tyres and thereby rough up the road surface.
I did notice an unexpected sighting on this unpretentious snapshot, viz. the car in front of us is an electric Jaguar. I didn't know such an animal existed!!! Just goes to show how fast electric cars are becoming the new norm over here (40% of new cars sold now are electric and the figure is rising sharply).

Buenos Dias fellow NikonGearians, NikonGearettes, NikonGearions, (I think I prefer NikonGearettes, 8).)
Yesterday I attended the memorial of an Uncle. He was 96 when he passed. He was married to my father's sister, Stella. Sports, especially baseball was a significant element in his life. He played ball into his 90's. When he was young he played semi-pro leagues and as he got older less competitive ball. Uncle Maury was on a team I organized of cousins and brothers. He was in his 60's and played first or pitched (so he didn't have to run far). Man, could he still hit. He loved hitting the ball. When the bat connected to the ball you could see fireworks flash across his eyes. He was very quiet, a man of little words. After the services, Mary Lou and I visited my cousin Patrick. He has been bed-bound since having a stroke two years ago. He can barely speak. Another sad state of affairs. Except for cousins on my mother's side, (of which Patrick is one of three), I am not close to my family. My fathers was a politician and as he moved up the political ladder we saw less of all my relatives. I had difficulty matching names to faces. I just sorta went my own way during my teens, leaving my little town to pursue other interests and brighter lights.

Buenas Tardes fellow NikonGearettes. This is the day after Thanksgiving. Mary Lou, Maggie and Gary are recovering in the patio. It is three o'clock and about 70F/21C in the backyard. Yesterday was long and tiring, but well worth the effort. The food was excellent, wine wonderful and both were more than plentiful. Nearly twice as many guests showed up than expected and fortunately we cooked up a ton of food. Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, salads, breads, cranberry sauce, et cetera all washed down with California, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, some unique red blends and an extremely tasty brandy. It was a very pleasant afternoon and evening and I wish you all could have come.
Mary Lou, (my much much better half), suggested that we do absolutely nothing today and I didn't argue. Consequently, after walking Maggie, (our Wheaten Terrier in the local park), we spent the day relaxing in the patio, sipping coffee, eating banana bread, watching news shows on the tele, reading the paper and just kicking back and watching the Koi swim lazily in the pond and the hummers darting amongst the blossoms.
Tonight, Thanksgiving leftovers ... a Netflix, followed up with a dip in the hot tub.
Tomorrow, I will roast some coffee beans.

Thank you, Tim, for pointing out the reflection on the roof. I tried two different versions for the process. One with CNX-D and another with CC. On CC, it was so bright that the reflection was assimilated to the buildings. The posted version was processed in CNX-D. I feel it more natural. And, yes, that is a contrail, and that was what made me want to shoot the scene. :)

Thanks for sharing, Gary. Your experience was close to our own, save for our homemade Habanero cranberry sauce that has become a must have. Not only did we get pumpkin pie, but my wife made pumpkin-ricotta cheese pie, just to gild the lily. By some standards, the whole event was a calorie counter's nightmare, but we persevered! ;)

None from moi. There just wasn't enough time for photos ... the thought didn't cross my mind as I was too busy cooking and the hosting. I know you would have enjoy all the food and I would have wanted you to add a few dishes. I separated the turkey skin from the meat and rubbed he meat with a mix of butter/basil/thyme and a branch of rosemary on top. Than I bagged the turkey and cooked per thermometer rather than time. The bird was juicy and delish. The wine was great from Temecula and Sonoma. I'll remember next time to get some snaps of the food.
Frank, I can see you stripping down to your undies and leaping into the hot tub with a glass of wine in one hand and a turkey leg in the other. 8)

Buenos Dias fellow NikonGearettes. Gary and Miss Maggie have returned from our morning walk. The sun is out, but it is a cool 66F. Maggie played with Honey and Chloe in the park. Honey is an expert at Frisbee and Chloe is a German Shepard Doberman pup. Honey and Chloe's human has a touch of the stomach flue and asked if I'd take Chloe home for a spell. Consequently, Maggie and Chloe are running around the backyard pulling all the toys out of the toy box and trampling the gardens ... an artichoke is half the size than it was pre-Chloe. 8) Gary is in the patio reading the paper and dogsitting. Well, more dogsitting than reading. Chole is mesmerized by the hummingbirds hovering about the feeder. At noon a friend is coming over to learn about roasting coffee. Then a movie at 3:00 p.m. and sushi later.

Buenos Dias Fellow NikonGearettes,
Gary is in a mood to write ... consequently you NikonGearettes may be my victims. Gary takes a sip of Colombian Supremo, delish.
In the last week Mary Lou and Gary watched a few movies and shows. Alpha is a Netflix movie, a fantasy based upon man's initial domestication of the dog about 20,000 year ago. A fun watch. Miss Maggie, (our Wheaten), loved Alpha and she watch the entire movie. Maggie was quite amusing watching the Tv with her popcorn. Another Netflix we enjoyed last week was Woman Walking Ahead, a very interesting movie about the last days of Sitting Bull. For the theater, Gary highly recommend Border. A very very odd Swedish movie with subtitles (at least here there were subtitles). Gary could tell it was Swedish because of all the Volvos and Saabs.
Gary is back at the keyboard. It has been raining here and Gary just finished emptying the rain barrels, fishing out a ton of leaves from the koi pond and getting soaking wet. The rain has eased up a bit, Gary has to run off and walk the dog.
Back again from the morning walk with Maggie and a quick break to toss on some dry clothing. Yes, the movie Border ... it is a very very odd movie, but Gary highly recommend it despite the mediocre cinematography.
Gary discovered The Maverick Theater, a little theatre in Fullerton (next door to La Mirada). It has two stages, one stage seats about 60 people and the other maybe 100. The theatre is so small that no audio amplification is necessary for the actors. It is wonderful place with a bar (a plus) and a lot of the shows are all about fun and not serious topics. The first show we attended was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde which was was not only quite well done but also made us fans of the venue. The next show in October was Night of the Living Dead. There were zombies coming out of every crevice, window and doorway. A cornucopia of flesh eating and severed limbs. The play was a ton of Halloween fun. Then there was Plan 9 From Outer Space, a marvelously stupid and funny play based on possibly the worst movie ever made. Lastly, Mary Lou and Gary watched Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, simply two hours of Christmas fun. On Tuesday, Mary Lou and Gary attended a play at The Mark Taper Forum, a theatre in the Music Center complex in downtown Los Angeles (DTLA). The play, written by a local playwright, was centered on a Mexican-American family and a Japanese-American family during WWII with special attention on the Japanese-American internment camps. OMG, it was knocked Gary completely flat it was soooo good. Gary could relate to the play on so many different levels. The play deeply touched Gary. Gary doubts if the show will ever play outside of California, but if you ever have the chance, it is a must see. The Mexican-Americans were sharecroppers for the Japanese owner, the two families working side-by-side in Cupertino, CA. When the war came, the Mexican-America family took care of the farm until the Japanese-Americans returned from the camps. The daughter of the Japanese-American family and the oldest son of the Mexican-American family fell in love. The only son of the Japanese-American family was killed in France with the 442nd Infantry Regiment and the youngest son of the Mexican-American family was with the 2nd Marine Division and died on the beaches of Tarawa. In spite of all the difference, the Mexican-Americans and the Japanese Americans found common ground to unite the families and prosper.
The play touched Gary because he grew up in a small agricultural community 20 miles east of Los Angeles. Some of my best friends in high school and college were of Japanese descent. Gary's father was in the first wave of Marines at Guadalcanal and my uncle, (mother's brother), also a Marine was severely wounded on Bougainville. (One of two survivors of an ambushed patrol.) Even though the Japanese were the enemy in a life-or-dead environment ... Gary's father and uncle never spoke badly of Japanese-Americans and welcomed them into our home as if they were family. In college Gary's Japanese-American friends and he would either go sushi hopping or discover new taco stands every week. A college photo professor of Gary was imprisoned at Manzanar. Gary's Japanese-Americans friends invite Gary to work on an oral history project composed of stories gleaned from internment camp survivors. The project turned into a book and was published. Gary can only thank his parents and also California for his liberal attitude towards races. Gary feels this attitude is pretty much pervasive throughout California. Out here, who you are, is more important than, what you are. In California we are not afraid of differences ... we celebrate them.
Later,
Gary
