Title: Re: March 2018
Post by: John Geerts on March 01, 2018, 19:52:01
Yes, I like the 20/1.4.   The Sigma Art 20/1.4  is the only 20mm with f/1.4 around.  The quality of the lens is better than previous lenses I have used from Sigma.

It takes some time to get used to a f/1.4 in the wide 20mm range, as you collect a lot of light. I previously only worked with f/2.8  or much slower in that region.

I would like to know how the 20/1,4 would compare with the Nikkor 20/1.8, strangly enough I never saw a good comparision.

Whether through luck, circumstance or an instinctual need to keep moving West, my ancestors piled up along the west side of the continent and the weather is fine in February.

However, the green grass is brown by June or July.

One year I visited Sweden at midsummer. It was amazing. Each place has its moments.

I own the 1.8/20G Nikkor and sold my 1.4/24G, because I Did not use it anymore. Great lens and much less heavy and bulky than the Sigma.

I really like to see the comparsion to the Sigma too

There is progress in the establishing of a new work and living place ... Now at least the basic backbone of networked storage facilities is set up and tested OK.

Cable runs are on the unwieldy side still, but eventually also these will be brought into a passable likeness of order and system :D (that's anyway the general idea, time will show what happens).

After a lengthy period of forced inactivity for health reasons, I finally popped outside at sunset to squeeze off a few test shots with my Zeiss 25mm f/1.4.  D810 handheld, ISO 1600, 1/320, f/8.  Being in a hurry I failed to notice the exposure compensation set at -0.7. Image is straight out of the camera except for resizing and cropping.

Spring is still a dream of the future here in my part of the world ... tonight, we got an additional 30 cm of fresh snow on top of our already petty ample "supply" :D

Snow cleared off the roads now begins to make impressive heaps everywhere. The picture below is a snapshot of one massive "landfill" with snow, the heaps must have been up towards 15 m deep in parts.

When all that snow melts later, we'll have a very wet spring waiting for us ...

Met up at the realtor's office today for signing the sales contract of my old house here in Oslo. The realtor's daughter, having a day off from kindergarten due to a mild flu, joined her mother for a part of the negotiations. Eventually, the grown-up stuff became boring and she fell asleep on the office floor.

Today the protective fence was finished and the ground was examined by geo-scientists. They did look for possible chemical contamination & how the soil is layerd. In two weeks the final results will be there. All I know now is that no really, really bad things were found that are obviously visible. There could still be some non obvios problems of course and I will try to wait as calm as possible!

Possible Roman villa. ;)

We will intentionally not dig deep enough to disturb the Romans. Our laws say we have to pay for everything if we disturb the Romans.

And: There were no villas in that part, only graves could be a possibility, but these lie more that one meter below ground where we will not disturb the soil layers.

The moving out of Oslo  project is drawing to a slow close these days. Most of the stuff is set up and organised in a functional pattern (or so I hope). Today I celebrated by hanging some of my pictures and arranging a late night listening station for my Stax Lambda Pro earspeakers. A small LED lamp (IKEA: Jansjô, very flexible and incredibly cheap at least in my country) nicely rounded off the layout.

So far so good. Spring might arrive over Easter too thus about time to dig out the more "serious" cameras. I've used the Nikon V1 the last months just for snapshots of the moving process. I located my Df yesterday and this very morning, the second of my UV-Nikkors emerged from the rubble -- I had been looking for that specimen for a week to join its sibling in preparation for UV photography later in spring time.

Thank you, John.  So far, I'm impressed by the metering technology of GH5 to stuff such color and dynamic range into a m4/3 sensor which is inferior to that of full size ones.

I admit having a weak spot for the old "chrome-bumper" style Naims. Been with that brand since the mid '70s. However, my history with Nikons precedes that by an additional decade. Thus they all are old "friends of the family" as it were.

Yes agree, but sharpening up does wonders. The colours are lovely with the 35-200.   Reminds me also a bit of the 35-70/3.5 Ai  and Angenieux 35-70.  Out of focus at 35mm is 'special'.

Concluding  a very convenient asset, that 35-200/3.5  ;)

Thanks Frank, Armando and Akira.

These Tulips are part of an Art-project of landscaping.  On an unused square on a busy corner a few years ago a park was developed by an artist. That included Tulips with LEDS to give some light in the evening. It was however a growing structure of Oat.

As the unused square will be built with apartments, the park and artwork will disappear on a short notice.  (extra info:  http://bijzonderebuitenruimte.nl/portfolio/goej-aord/

Four weeks later than the last image of this subject, snow is still quite plentiful outside my house. However, now you can read the "Parking Reserved" sign, but as the parking lot itself is buried in meter-thick layers of that white substance, those waiting for s parking lot need to be patient :D

As this is the last day of March, spring continues to be a dream of the indeterminable future in my corner of the planet. Last night we had -15C.
