Title: Spain / Paco / Granada / May 2018
Post by: Frank Fremerey on October 04, 2017, 23:25:07
Who will be in?

Paco just writes:

"Granada is a great meeting point. Many interesting things very close, Alhambra, Gardens, Cathedral, Albaycin-Sacromonte, Sierra Nevada, the beach is 1 hour away...tapas come free with a beer for less than 3 euros :)

I´ll love for a NG get together to happen in Spain for sure.
I´m bury pretty much the year round but so are all of you. Taking in consideration time frame and the best season to come to Spain I will suggest the month of May."

And who wants help make it happen?

Potentially yes - I'd love it, but subject to dates, duration and agreement with wife as I already have a trip to Skye planned for late April.
The sooner details emerge, the greater the chances for me.

How about we just say 5-12 May and work around this preliminary 7 day slot :)

Running by the river this morning I though about our discussion at Jakov's house about settling in the countryside (near Granada in this case) with a bunch of rental cars to be able to move all into the same hotel / huts / venue and be able to spend the time from breakfast to night together PLUS more than one option of adventure per day like we did in Scotland?

For me the week after would be much better: May 12 to 19.

I added a poll

Unfortunately (as always) I cannot participate.  Hope you enjoy the meeting.

Maybe I'm looking forward to a small but intimate NG event here in Tokyo instead.  ;)

Hi everyone,

yes, the preferable airport is Málaga. There is one closer in Granada but with very little traffic and usually more expensive.

Hotel accommodations are plenty and in a wide price range. I have asked for little hotels close to the center and Albaycin neighborhood -some 80 to 120 € for double room per night in May- and still waiting for an answer for small apartments that can be rented for the weekend. Will post more here soon.

Really to keep in mind are tickets to see the "Alhambra" they sell very fast and should be reserved as soon as possible.
Any more questions-suggestions please don´t hesitate to ask

Erik is the airfare ordering executive for the two of us so I lower my shoulders and relax :D :D the strenuous move out of Oslo should be well and truly over at that time and I certainly will be in need of a vacation then. Must shop some suitable summer wear though.

SECOND EDIT, changes in RED

My friend just called. She found a house with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, availability and price she will check today.

I will be in Granada Airport 5.5. at 1:30 p.m. and have a VW Polo/Seat Ibiza size car for 217€ for 8 days, including full waiver everything, second driver included. Sharing will be 55€ plus gasoline if we share with four, etc...

I will fly back from Granada on Sunday at 7 a.m.

Bent: I will also do a part time sharing if not enough full time sharers can be found.
But: I fly Granada, because it was much cheaper than Malaga in this case. Check option Iberica over Madrid (whomever this may concern)!

I have visited the Alhambra and Granada on many occasions .  One of my favourite places in the world.  I read "Tales of the Alhambra" when I was very young and drove over every time I was working in Rota (near Jerez) and often took my support team with me.   I envy all that make the trip.

Have a great time.

She and her sister are still on it and try to find a good place. Last thing I heared was that they identified a four bedroom for bathroom place and try to get it for us.
Will 4 bedroms do it, some will have share ;) I will share with my wife, Gunver.
I count 7 persons at the moment, Bjørn want a single room, so it fits if the rest share rooms :)
Looking forward to meet you all.

I can share, I did share before. In Heidelberg we shared a bedroom with four. All good if the people are nice!

Bigger villa is not easy and two together is what I’m aiming for. Will keep updating info as it arrives.
Would you like for me to try to set some time shooting a dance class?

I can only recommend to check on direct flights to Granada. In my case these were cheaper and you save the 90 minute ride per direction to Malaga. Of course you milage may vary.

My traffic agent is still sick but at work again.

So we need two single rooms, two couple rooms and how many shared rooms?

Pre-aprobed to take pictures during class. Will be in the morning (09:00 to 14:30, somewhere there) for modern class. Trying to add ballet and flamenco so you can choose.

Ortsbeschreibung

And it is not expensive at all. She sais that it is very difficult to find bigger houses.

Sorry, I have other business to attend to. Later this night I will have more time.

I know, Erik, you can read German. Maybe you create a compact version in English?

i wait for the rest. travel agency will be open from 10 to 13 tomorrow. We can finalize the booking then. I have a soecial insurance for all of my bookings so we are on the safe side.

~2000€/8 is not expensive for such a luxerious place per week

I have the list like this:

Paco not staying overnight at the Villa

Bent + Gunver in one room
Bjørn one room
Frank one room
Jakov one room
Erik one room

So altogether 5 rooms, did I miss anyone?

Looks like two rooms has separate beds so there are still room for more ;)

Paco thinks it is a good solution. He has to work all week and we have a set of amazing photo opportunities very near to the place we stay. We are very near to Granada compared to the Killin situation. We have a phantastic solution were we all can stay and do day trips like we did in Scotland.

Big changes in little time. Sorry to hear. Should we make a list again?
The proposed lodging is far away but in our conversation  today with Frank he told in recent events people was taking up to two ours drive to different photographic opportunities. If so, this is a good option already on hold, just give me at least an extra week to get some more options before deciding.

There was some misunderstanding as it is definitely not walking distance from the beach.

If smaller place is needed there are more options. Still looking into small apartments close to each other and a couple of houses.

I have booked tickets for a flight with Norwegian from Oslo to Malaga, with a stopover in Copenhagen, on May 5th. Thus we'll arrive simultaneously in Malaga.

For the return trip, I'll go with Gunvel and Bent to Malaga on the 11th. Not decided on the return flight(s) yet, perhaps I'll stay a day or two in Malaga before flying home on the firstcoming Monday. Or maybe I'll go to Copenhagen to visit Erik and my middle brother who is married to a Danish girl.

I am coming. I would even go alone to meet Paco, whom I will also meet in Düsseldorf later this month. In my case tickets to Granada were much cheaper than tickets to Malaga. I am looking forward to meeting Bjørn again, very happy and I am looking forward to see Bent & Gunvel for the first time.

I also hope that the nice people from Austria who always came to the past meetups make up their minds and join us. What about US folks?

I booked a flight directly into Granada & a car with second driver option. So if someone else likes to join me, we will have all options. I will fly also from Granada on Sunday morning.

If Bjørn writes a round mail also to those who did not read the forum lately, there might be some more people joining in. We had some non-regulars join our meetups in earlier cases and it was also fun to meet them!

City center? I am not so sure if this is best for hiking and nature photography. Country life with quiet sleeping places and visiting cities if necessary seems more appealing to me

There is a possibility of a house with three diferent bedrooms with double bes -one, on top, overlooks the big  common place- plus one portable bed, confy sofá and a possible extra single 90 cms wide bed.
It is located 10 min outside Granada and has plenty of parking inside the land -a few olive trees and barbecue if I´m not mistaken-
It is available from the 5th to the 12th and the owner has no problem to add an extra day.
Price will be 250€ / week. Grand total.
As it is outside the city and from a private owner, it has no internet. If you want a phone-shared conecction with around 10gb can be easily arranged.
10 min to Granada and 5-7 min to the main highway to go anywhere.

I keep on looking and should have at least a couple more options after the weekend.
I´m out of the city from tomorrow so, if there is interest, pictures can be taken from monday the 1st

Looking forward to meet you all!

If only Frank, Bjørn, and Gunver+me with are to sleep in the house, the 3 bedrooms should suffice.
It might be nice to try a week without internet :o
The price is low, so the extra costs of adding a phone based internet will be ok.

Parking is only mentioned in one of them!
Otherwise both will do.

First one looks better. Huetor is not pretty but close to Granada. You can park and take a bus or taxi to see the city and is close to the highway to go anywhere else. If my counts are correct is 5 of you coming? Bjørn requested a private room so 3 rooms with a double bed will do. That´s what I´m looking at as well.

Finding a place for a week, with three double bedrooms, appears to be a very complex logistical problem (187 posts, spread over nearly 7 months). If successful, I suggest you call it “Operation Overlord” 😉

OK, enough.

A lot of uncertainties regarding attendance and locations have been dealt with. Transgender issues came into the equation along the way as well. A solution appears to be found.

Devote further posts to the topic at hand.

Which of the two houses would you prefer?

Can we book then?

I follow the majority. You can choose. No strong feelings for either alternative, except the availability of parking space is beneficial of course.

Yes book please :)

Gunver and I are interested, any others?

As of yesterday official tickets are sold out until June. There still the option of a guided your if I’m not mistaken.

The two times I visited the Alhambra, I did not have pre-purchased tickets. I was told by locals that there was no way I was getting in. I went anyway & stood in the very left line (which was the shortest, also) and managed to get tickets for the day I was there.
Buena suerte

As I recall, about an hour or so before the time allowed in for the afternoon.

The weather forecast calls for some indoor activities, any chance that we can get to photograph at the dance studio?

Birna doesn't like rain. Triggers her asthma.

I had hoped to escape my bleak and dreary weather at home into the sunny Mediterranean climate?

We must use all our willpower to think about sun ;)
Otherwise it seems we are going in the wrong direction, the weather forecast for Copenhagen is also fine for next week :o

We'll see soon enough. I put a light rain coat in my luggage besides the summer dress. Hopes are for the latter to be appropriate attire. And add a couple of books just to be on the safe side.

Hi everyone. Looking forward to meet you.

Weather is impredictable this time of the year. Will see day by day. How long a drive will be practical for a day trip? Just to have some options.

Taking pictures of a dance class, rehearsal and maybe a show (there is such this thursday) maybe arranged. It is a school but interesting anyway. You have already seen images from some students.
Albaycin and Granada are very nice, there are hamman, cathedral, interesting neighborhood and what not.

   See you tomorrow?

I am sheduled to be in Granada Airport by midday Saturday.
The Norvegians will arrive late in the evening and have a 90 minute drive.
So after check in we could have a late lunch / coffee / Hi Tea  and connect with the Malagan incomings later by telephone. Only wine drinking will not be if I have to drive a car afterwards.

Sun? Rain? I do not mind. For a great photo opportunity / landscape / cultural  event I might drive two hours one way, but I prefer less.

There will be a lot to discover in Granada alone. Architecture, Eateries, Vinothekas, Bodegas, historic places, gardens, people, street portraits.

And we see you and your wife and your dance company

Glad to hear that a dance session may be possible.
