Title: The only problem with D850 is...
Post by: Stany Buyle on September 10, 2017, 15:07:49
...PC power and disk space.
After handling over 1000 D850 nefs, with hangs and long waiting times, I realise I have to go shopping.
My 5 year old PC(i7-2600k,16Gb ram, sabertoothP67, 2nd gen SSD's),  can't do this job decently.  :(
Up to that, Nikon software, which I prefer, slows everything down even more...
Kindest regards,
Stany

Yes, serious, but doable. What about DR, compare to D810, would you? THX!   LZ

For what it is worth, according to:

 http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm

it is at least as good as the D810. But not always as good as the D800E.

On my 5K iMac with 32GB RAM not a lot of difference compared to D800E processing, no crashes yet with either ACR or Capture NX-D. I even managed to to a 21-shot stack with the demo version of Zerene stacker without significant issues.

According to this nikon D750 is the best iso/dr sensor

Hi Stany. Awaiting the D850 for a while I upgraded my computer a while ago following the advice of our long term member Andy formerly known as AndyE or NikonAndEye.

He informed me that the big number crunching sites in the US of A replace gazillions of potent Xeon Chips whenever an upgrade to their server infrastructure is due.

I bought two eight way Xeons with HT for 65$ a pop plus shipping and taxing into Germany and plugged them into a dual Xeon board from ASUS with 64GB  of RAM. This way I get phantastic multi thread performance of up to 32 threads at a time for relatively small money. The whole system without VGA, Monitor and case, but including silent prepackaged water cooling was roughly 1000€ compared to 1500€ for only one typical eight way dual enabled Xeon CPU alone.

Huge Panoramas render faster that I can cook a coffee....

Also Photoshop CC subscription runs very smoothly and editing in NX-D is as fast as viewing in VNX-i.

Only thing that is slow is rendering edited files in NX-D. This is actually done faster in camera.

Thanks. Your answer is very helpfull. Perhaps the nikon sofware is my only problem...
ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate does not support D850 files yet, but when it will, nothing will be faster to go through the 100% viewing files...
Kindest regards,
Stany

even without frank's epic deal-hunting prowess, you can buy a PC these days that can handle big images without breaking a sweat for about 1/3 the price of the d850 ;)

Just use Capture One Pro and no need to expensive upgrades.

C1P handled large file since their inception for medium format cameras.

Try it. It is free.
