July, 2017, Lisbon Portugal
My neighborhood looks like a dump with piles of debris everywhere. The house is almost empty. It smells bad. My body aches because I am not up to doing so much physical work. I am the only one who has a car because mine was in the shop and it did not flood. We rented a storage unit to keep what is left of our stuff, mostly kitchen items and some clothing on high hangers. Our apartment will not be ready until October 3rd which leaves us in limbo until then. Shortages of petrol have eased, but traffic is still awful due to road closures. There are shortages of prescription drugs because pharmacies are behind on deliveries. While all this mayhem is going on in Houston, Florida, especially the Miami area is waiting for Irma, a true killer storm. My 200-500 zoom is full of water. A local repairman said to throw it out.

How awful, what a nightmare, Ron, better move out.
-
Ron, just exchange "dusk" with "sunrise" in your picture's title and let a new beginning come.
Keep safe and look ahead!

We will not be returning to the house.

I really appreciate your upbeat comment. Things should improve a lot once we get to our apartment.
-
Beautiful and serene image, Ron! Hope your mind will be as peaceful as this image in a shortest possible time.
I think you should find the new place not only on the second or third floor, but the building located on a higher altitude where there is no concern of the flood.

Ron:
Your Lisbon Bridge photograph is beautiful
But you poor people: what a dreadful and heart-breaking home-coming.
Hopefully you can get some help with the hard physical work of trying to clean-up and rescue what can be rescued.
-
Beautiful shot, Ron. If only every day had those colors!
Please check the elevation v. local hydrology of your future residences if you are staying in the Houston area. There is a possibility that what happened will occur again.
-
Thank you for posting the beautiful photograph of the bridge.
I'm so sorry about your house and it contents. I hope things get better soon.
Best,
Dave Hartman

Good to here your safe! All the best and hope things clears up!
-
Ann, nice to see you again.
The apartment is up two levels from the ground, about 6 meters. We don't intend to stay there much longer than a year but right now there is no long term plan. We are going to visit our daughter and her family in Austin, TX tomorrow.
-
Lovely photo, but very sad to hear about the destruction of your home.
I hope you can get back to normality before too long.
-
Ron, so sorry to hear that flooding has hit you so hard so soon after the last big one a year or two back. At least it sounds as if you and your family are OK.
Let your beautiful image of the Lisbon bridge be a reminder of better things ahead.
I have travelled over this bridge. It is very long and is a fine piece of engineering.

Hello Ron
you picked a very nice image to share your current status
Hope things get easier and better soon
I'm afraid to ask, but were your image archives dry ?
Hope you have a good time while in Austin

All of my digital archives are dry. Everything was on external hard drives which were above the water line. I had done very little photography for decades before buying a DSLR, so I am not going to weep about a couple of old boxes of color transparencies which I haven't looked at in over 20 years. My wife and I are OK, but under the new definition of what passes for OK. We are dealing with this blow and finding solutions to our problems. We did have flood insurance which will reduce the financial impact markedly. Today two policemen stopped to chat with us today. They were so nice. The whole thing is kind of surreal. The big ranch house is history. We are downsizing and I am looking forward to it. I appreciate all the comments.

Ron, in the big scheme of things, I´m happy that you are both ok and about your insurance. I hope you will be past this and stronger in no time.
I like the image, how it represents a strong broken symmetry ( begining of everything) and still being in harmony. Colors pleasant and with deep spiritual side. Interesting that I choose to see a sunrise.
Thans for sharing it

I am glad you both are safe.

Thanks. Every time I look at one that came out like this I think how fortunate I was to be there with a decent camera. Yeah, this too will pass.

Very much like water under the lovely bridge you started this thread with.

That's a great thought. Our move in day has moved up from October 3 to Sept 16 and we will get a larger place, probably one we could stay in indefinitely. The rent isn't cheap, but eventually expenses connected with the house will go away.

Good to hear you safe!

Glad to hear you are safe! Great opener shot, btw.

Ron,
I have posted nothing so far, thinking that words are only words, they cannot change anything for you, and they may seem a bit vacuous in the face of the enormous upheaval that you and your wife are experiencing.
And yet, knowing that others, who are not able to do anything for us, still feel for us and wish us to get through the ordeal as quickly and painlessly as possible, is a heart warming feeling.
I think it would be if I were in your place.
I hope that the forced change in your life will have its positive aspects, you certainly seem to have a positive attitude in the face of adversity.
All the best
Simone

Simone, my much younger next door neighbor said they might not be able to get me out of that apartment complex. Thank you for your kind words.
-
Hang in there, Ron. You're a Texan- "tough" comes built into our soul...

Thank you Rick. We moved to an apartment yesterday. It's a really nice complex.

It is great news that you have now been able to move into the new apartment. You must both be finding it a huge relief after the turmoil which have suffered.

Thank you Ann. It's a lot of work, retrieving things from storage and buying furniture. Inventory is low on sofas due to the storm. It's a good thing Houston was overbuilt with apartments otherwise I don't know where we would have gone.
-
All the best to you both!
-
I am happy to hear that you found a new home. It must have been a scary and uncertain time.
-
Every time bad weather hits Texas, I always think of you Ron. It does my heart good to hear from you and know that you are OK.
You've gone through this kind of thing more times than anyone should ever have to...but you keep your chin up and juts keep moving forward. You are an inspiration!
Glad that you have an apartment to stay for the now.
