Hi all,
Jakov, Nicole and I are happy to announce the first Nikongear Photo Race in the Hague (Netherlands). May many races follow!
Our source of inspiration are the Urban Photo Races held across the world. What does this mean? During the day participants will shoot 3 photos for 4-6 themes. Themes will be handed out during the day at checkpoints in the city. Themes will require your creativity so don't forget to pack your creativity when you decide to come.
It is not (yet) our intention to run it in a competitive format, although we may change our minds when we find a qualified jury. However, the idea is to publish each one's series here at the forum.
As we will participate ourselves (participating is too much fun to stay on the sideline) we will seek for someone who will provide one of us with the themes when the race starts. The checkpoints will be used to share our experiences and ha ing a drink or meal. Further details will be provided later.
For now, 2 dates seem to work best: August 12 or September 30. Both dates are on a Saturday, allowing people to come in on Friday and leave on Sunday. Depending on your interest, we will organize some other activities (such as having a drink or dinner or a photography-related activity ;-) ). When sufficient people want to stay overnight we may check for an arrangement with a hotel.
If your are interested, please respond to this thread by:
1. mentioning your preferred date: August 12 or September 30
2. if you would like to stay overnight, and if so, which nights
We do hope that many of you from around the world will join us on this exciting event! If you haven't scheduled your vacation yet, this might be THE opportunity.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Jakov, Nicole, Peter

I'll love to go. September is the best dates for me. If happening, I'll be probably flying to and from Amsterdam unless there is a better option.
-
Great idea ;) I'm in, so far both dates are fine, will have to come back to it ;)
-
I might join, but only Sept 30 is possible.
-
Great idea. I'm in for September 30. Most probably I'll drive in the morning, if it doesn't start at 7:00 :)
-
What a cool idea, I'm in! Both dates are fine for me, no need for a hotel in my case. :D
-
A very cool idea. :) Both dates suit me (at the moment)
-
I am interested. I could only make the 12 August date, and would stay over on the Friday and Saturday nights.
-
August 12th is fine for me.
September 30th only till about 16:00 (concert of the Rolling Stones :D)
-
I guess we will have to host both dates, which will be my pleasure :)
-
If it's the 30th, I'm in :)
Only a 200 km drive, so no need for accomodations on my/our behalf. We'll bring Kristina, Anouk, Lumi and myself
-
Can the themes be published on the list so those of us half a world away can play in our own locality?
-
Jack, I think if the themes are posted, even after the fact, it would be fun to give it a go locally. As part of the Competition, not sure it would work but the themes could be posted as a "Themes" . Of course some of the themes may not suit my location and the Monsoon ;) .
Cheers,
-
Thank you for sharing your interest! Wonderful to see so many people are interested already! It seems that September 30 is the preferred date so far. So let’s settle on that date to make it easier for others to sign up.
Anthony, if it is possible for you to also attend on September 30 that would be great!
Chris, perhaps we would steal one theme from the UPR “Finally I am an old guy” which allows you to participate for that theme during the concert by making a bunch of photos of the Stones. ;-)
Bjorn, hopefully you can make it!
We love Jack’s idea to share the themes at this forum to allow others to run their own NPR! We will then be able to turn this into a global event. So we will share the themes on the 30th of september when the themes are known. We’ll try to find solutions for the time differences.
Feel free to share the event with your friends and photography-buddies. More people = more fun.
So for now the date is September 30.
Hopefully the group will become larger as we get closer to September. In the meantime, we will keep you posted.
-
September, 2 Nights, Hotel Arrangement welcome
-
Great idea.
Struggling with dates right now though, September much less propable that August. We'll see.
Would love to meet up again :-)
-
Thanks, sorry, 30 September is impossible for me.
It is a great idea, and I look forward to seeing the results.

I am sorry, Anthony.
When there are more people who can only attend august 12, it could be an idea to do it twice as Jakov suggested. We'll meet the 28th of June and will discuss it.
-
I really like to see Anthony again. 12 August is in the school and Kindergarten Holiday so I will probably be occupied with two kids, because my wife probably has to work.

-
Looking at the responses I am not certain that there is more interest for September?
Those who could make it in August are:
Erik Lund
John Geerts
Anthony (prefers August)
Chris Dees (prefers August)
Thomas G (prefers August)
So let me repeat myself, I really don't mind if we do it twice :)

Thanks, Frank, let's hope we can both be there.

When I did the math, I made a distinction between those could attend august only, those who could attend only September and those who could attend both. Thomas G was not on that list yet so Anthony was the only one who could only make it in August.
But, as said, doing it twice is a possibility. Let's explore this further when we meet and when other people have expressed their interest.

Jakov,
I appreciate this offer a lot :-)
-
The Hague has enough spots to visit :) and we can certainly find enough themes for 2 races.
It's great to see your enthusiasm for this event.
Please continue to sign up and give your preferences.
I'm looking forward to see you soon.
-
I'd like to play and see all of you again. I can only make it the September 30 though.
Looking forward to it!

We are happy to announce that:
1. Susanne Fichtler has joined the organizing committee. So the group now consists of 4 people.
2. We will host 2 events. One on August 12 and one on September 30.
3. We encourage people across the world to organize concurrent events.
4. Each race will cover 4 themes. 2 themes will be announced when we start. 2 other after lunch.
5. To ensure that everyone has the same starting position, we will draw theme-straws just before the start. Themes will probably be partly conceptual, partly concrete.
6. The themes drawn will also be communicated to those organizing/participating in the race in other cities.
7. There will be 3 checkpoints (well, meeting points would be a better description: one at coffee time, one at lunch time and one dinner. The first one will be announced shortly before the day. The other 2 meeting points during the day. The main purpose of the meeting points is to socialize and get energy for the next activity.
8. Rather than sending photos in directly after the race, we decided to take things a bit easier. For each theme, 3 entries have to be posted before noon the next day (time zone of the city where the photo race is run). For each theme, no more than 3 photos will be allowed for entry.
9. For each theme one thread will be generated to allow participants to post their entries.
10. We would appreciate that participants limit the editing of photos to regular postprocessing steps such as B/W conversion, curves, cropping, and alike. So please do not post photos that involve heavy and creative editing, such as turning photos into abstract paintings, changing colours, adding or deleting subjects/objects , (other than via a crop).
11. The community will be asked to vote for the "best series" per theme. We will come back to the system that we'd like to use for voting.
The request for hotel arrangements has been limited so we won't be able to arrange discounts. It would be best to arrange for lodging and transport yourself. However, if you need some ideas or help, let us know and we will try to accommodate.
May we ask you to communicate:
1. your preferred date for participation, even if you already expressed your interest earlier
2. When do you intend to arrive and leave
3. Any limitations/request w.r.t. food.
4. Will you bring others to the event.
If you can't attend, but would like to do a similar thing in another city, please leave a message here as well.
Fee free to drop a note here with questions and ideas as well.
We are really, really looking forward to seeing you at one of these days, catch up and have fun together.
Let's hope this is the start of an annual happening!
-
I have added poling buttons, so it's easy to choose the preferred date :)

4. Will you bring others to the event.
Certainly (have voted in the poll):
1. 30 September
2. Same day
3. Not really
4. John if he decides to join ;)
-
Sorry, August 12th is not available for me anymore (business festivity).
-
interested, but not certain whether I'll be able to join you.
Any deadline for committing to either date?
Cheers,
Günther
-
Günther, there is no deadline, whatsoever :)
-
I'll be very pleased to see you again.
1. 30 September
2. Same day
3. Nothing
4. Denis, who was in Maastricht, and perhaps Martine, who always confirm late.
I voted.
-
Well,,, for me it's now the only option 30. September :)
-
I can only make 12 August; but there would need to be enough participants, as the social aspect of meeting fellow NG'ers is very important. I have voted in the poll.
As for the questions:
1. 12 August
2. Arrive 11 August, leave 12 August (or 13 August if enough people stay on for dinner).
3 None.
3. No.
-
Great !
4. John if he decides to join ;)
Happy to join, Hans.
Great idea to make two events. For me it's no problem to join in for the 12 August as well !
-
If both take place I will possibly participate in both. I am keen to see Anthony, my old pal and hopefully Bez too, my love. For the social event I can throw in a box of http://www.chateau-couronneau.fr/ or another wine of quality
If only one event takes place I prefer the later date. That is how I voted.
I will arrive Friday & spend two nights, leave on Sunday.
I will try to coordinate all that with Werner from Bonn, whom I will also share a car with as we did before.
Food: no WHEAT and no MILK as ingredients, currently also no garlic and no raw food, only cooked.
-
Some details about the program:
- We start at 10 am and end at about 10.30 pm after dinner. So we'll have plenty of time to socialize and take pictures.
- Both events are organized and we encourage you to participate twice, as we do. :)
- Because of the lunch and dinner bookings, we need to have your participation confirmation at least a week before the event.
See you soon.
-
Are there anybody interested in doing a local photo race in Copenhage on August 12?
Br Bent
-

PeterN and Nicole will shortly follow up with a detailed planning :)
Yours, Jakov

I'm in the same situation. Will do my utmost to attend 30 Sept.
-
Yes, 30 September is still on!
The Hague is waiting :)
-
This is a final call for the 12 August photo race in The Hague.
Please confirm if you are interested.
Thanks, Jakov

I have not made any arrangements for meetings as nobody has responded, but I could just make my own contribution ;)

I can definitely NOT join the 12th.
I am still on for September though.
You guys have fun!
-
I'll leave the racing part of this event to the more gifted photographers but might join later for dinner :)
-
The first photo race is getting closer and closer.
We have also thought about those of you who couldn't attend but would like to participate in your surroundings.
Hence, we will be opening threads with the themes as we draw them.
The first two themes will be drawn and published in the morning, while the other two around lunch on Saturday 12 August.
You are encouraged to post up to 3 images per theme. The deadline for posting will be noon the following day. Then we will open up the polls for voting.
All comments and suggestions are welcome.
-
Jan Anne, do join us for dinner, there will be fireworks on display in Scheveningen.
Apart from the fireworks, I heard that the Biggest and Brightest Meteor Shower in History is About to Take Place on that day:
http://educateinspirechange.org/science-technology/biggest-brightest-meteor-shower-history-take-place-dont-want-miss/
Now all we need are cloudless skies :)
-
Unfortunately cicumstances changed and I will not be able to attend.
Feeling that I'm going to miss something.
-
Themes 1 and 2 have just been drawn:
1. Halfway Down
2. Street Food
Themes 3 and 4 will be drawn during lunch.
Happy shooting.
-
Themes 3 and 4 have been drawn:
3. Diversity
4. I was here before
-
Today the four musketeers roamed through The Hague.
I will post all images here that don't belong in the challenges as will the rest I hope :)
The Hague is celebrating 100 years of the Mondriaan abstract and non-figurative art.
-
Cool flag, Jakov! Hope you guys enjoy the race!
-
Thanks, Akira. We are having fun. Feel free to join the race from Tokyo (or anyone anywhere). The themes are published. We are now at the beach waiting for fireworks. A lot of processing yet to occur. Will we manage by noon tomorrow local time :)
-
Ahh, beatiful Mondrian!
-
Thank you, Paco!
If only Paco, Akira, and many others could have joined the 4 musketeers...
-
I´ll try very hard to be there in September ;)
Akira, come!!!
-
Akira, missed the fireworks :D
Tonight in Scheveningen, China and France had the honors to light the sky.
I didn't shoot the Chinese due to unforeseen circumstances but I caught the French at display :)
-
Nice selection, Jakov!
Our annual firework festival will be held the day after tomorrow. The weather forecast says that it will be cloudy and occasionally rain. Hope it will turn out to be wrong!
-
Anthony, thank you for joining us. It was a real pleasure to see you again. You are a true gentleman as I have been repeating all this time.
Here is a blurry one of the binnenhof in The Hague.
-
I had a great time in the Hague with Jacov, Nicole, Peter and Aleksandra. I am sorry I cannot make the 30 September event, but I strongly recommend it to anyone who is able to attend.
A target rich location, and wonderful NG people, what more can one request?
-
Spectacular! ;)
-
Thank you, Erik! We are all spectacular aren't we :)
The first NG photo race has concluded. I appeal to all NG folks to vote for the 4 themes!
-
I love your first Fireworks shot, Jakov. Especially since the wheel was turning very slowly so I assume the shutter speed was longer than the 10-15 seconds you mentioned. The colors of the wheel, the pillars and the tones of the building look great. Did you use a grey filter? At f11, ISO100, I measured a shutter speed of 3sec. max to keep the evening/night look of the skies. Or did you use another trick?
BTW: it was great to meet Anthony. As you said: a gentleman and a wonderful companion. We had a spectacular day.
-
Thank you, Peter!
I used D750 and 85/1.4.
In the beginning it was ISO 100; f/11; 20sec.
Then I started speeding it up because I felt that I was blowing out the wheel too much.
So I ended up at ISO 100; f/5.6; 2 secs.
I don't remember exactly what the settings were of the first image that you like so much, but I will let you know as soon as I reach the EXIF data ;)

Thank you. I recognize the shorter shutter speed versions from my photos of the French fireworks.
Since you did not see the Chinese fireworks, here is one shot at 1s and f5.6 with D750 and 58mm. I only discovered the barrel in the front towards the end of the Chinese fireworks. ;-)

and one 2s f8 shot of the French fireworks:

I must admit that the wheel in your long exposurephoto brings something extra compared to the shorter exposure photos.
-
seems you really had a great time
I am struggeling between the first and the last fireworks shot, but they are all great

Neat firework images, Peter!
Unfortunately the annual firework festival on August 15th was cancelled due to the rain. No firework images from me this year. :(

-
Ann, there will be more opportunities for a photo race in the future. It would be lovely to see you again.
As one of my favorite bands "(Dead Kennedy's) would say: "Last call for alcohol"
The NPR Committee organising this event would like to share the following practicalities.
10:00 - Meetup for coffee and draw of themes will take place right next to the Central Station in The Hague - Mingle Mush;
13:00 - Lunch and draw of the second pair of themes - BIT Grill;
19:00 - Dinner and drinks - Bleyenberg.
There's 15 of us thus far and the time is nearing. Please let us know if you are joining for restaurant reservation purposes.
The NPR Committee reserves rights to change the schedule but with prior notice :)
All comments and suggestions are more than welcome.
See you all soon, Jakov
-
It would also be helpful to know if you would like to run a race in your own city. If so, we will post the themes when these are drawn.
-
There's 15 of us thus far and the time is nearing. Please let us know if you are joining for restaurant reservation purposes.
Yes, i'll be there from start till end, so including the restaurants :D
-
Is there a common hotel where all externals could reside and have a glass our two before bedtime?
-
BEZ? Where is Bez?
-
Looks like a HUGE NG gathering!
-
Erik will be there, so yes, HUGE :D
-
might be an interesting place for people photography during the photo race: https://amsterdambookfair.net/home/ (https://amsterdambookfair.net/home/)
-
Jakov et al - Thanks for organizing everything on the practical level! Very well ;)
The plan is so far that we will join the Coffee, Lunch and Dinner :-*

Thank you Thomas for the tip. Since the race in The Hague, I doubt that we could take a walk 60km to the north to visit the Amsterdam book fair.
Frank, we haven't booked a common hotel.
Since I have guests already, I cannot offer you a spare bed at my place, sorry.
Erik, the thanks belongs to PeterN, Nicole and Suse, I am just the publisher :)
-
Duly noted! Also a big thank you to PeterN, Nicole and Suse <3

For those looking for lodging and/or transport: there is no possibility to arrange a deal with a hotel with the limited number of people we have. So using your favorite booking site or app might be the best approach.
If you want to stay in Amsterdam: the train brings you in 45-55min from Amsterdam Central Station to the Hague Central Station.
If you want to chat about hotels in the Hague, send me a message or emai. I am happy to reflect on options.
Peter

Contemplating joining if there still is room aboard the magic bus :)
-
There's 15 of us thus far and the time is nearing. Please let us know if you are joining for restaurant reservation purposes.
Count me in for restaurant bookings.
See you there.

There is plenty of room in the bus! Would be great if you could join.
-
I will come by car, have free seats from Bonn to The Hague, will be at the Restaurants & stay the night before and the night after in The Hague. Either I will explore the place on my own or I will be pleased to have people join me. Thank you, Peter, for help finding a Hotel in the middle of the action.

We are getting closer and closer to the 30th.
We've made some maps for your convenience to use during your stay.
If you shoot me a PM with your email address, I will send you a pdf file in color.
Also a last call to those who would like to participate in their own city: if you are interested, please say so. We will then publish the themes as soon as they are known.
For those mentioned in the list last published by Nicole: when it is not possible for you to attend, please let us know as well.
-
Thanks, Looking forward!!! ;) you can maybe convert the PDF to a JPG and post it here ;)
-
Finally I will not be able to make it :-\ :'(
I was looking forward to meet you all in person and share the experience but it will have to wait until the next time.
-
Wonderful, Paco. I am still searching for a hotel & people who like to share the place to experience The Hague at night, street shooting until early in the morning!
Drop me a PN to coordinate
-
Wonderful, Paco.
Frank, I´m not coming. Wonderful? ;D ;D ;D ::) Misunderstanding somewhere
Real pity. I still can try to play from here but the point was the meeting itself. Have fun!

I did not see the "not" ... pity

Big thank you to the organisers from me as well and just a note that I will meet you in the morning and for lunch, however, unfortunately I cannot join you for dinner. Looking forward to seeing you all!
-
For all those that would like to have a drink Friday evening, you are welcome to join the Crew at my place around 21:00.
Beware of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll!
PM me if you would like to know my address.
-
Usually the afterparties are the best - However,,, I'm sure this will be an excellent pre party 8)
-
A last-minute tip: small notebook and pen may come handy to keep track of ideas as well as shots made for each idea. Although it may sound easy to keep track of 3 shots per theme, the excitement of the day may distract you. Well, at least it happened to me although that was with six themes.
Obviously shooting 1000 photos and selecting afterwards is also possible. ;-)
-
Thank you all who have organised the main event and the pre party. I have found some nice bottles of Bordeaux and Corbiere to not let the pre party get too dry. I am not sure about the after party and how many bottles we might need. My cellar has a lot to offer so we might upload some bottles to Jakov's place.....
-
Denis, who was there in Maastricht, will also be with me. Can you count him for reservations?
Thanks.
-
Bruno, Denis is more than welcome and he will be counted in for the reservations.
Frank, I have a bottle of wine specially for you ;)

A few (food) tips :
Don't miss the excellent Wiener style pastries at
'Wiener Konditorei ' at the Lange Poten 2511 EE The Hague
http://www.wienerkonditorei.nl/banketbakkerij/
I'm a fan of their 'Sachertorte' for over 35 years now, despite no longer living in The Hague
for close to 20 years now still make a detour for it when I happen to be in the neighbourhood
If you like Indonesian style food and snacks, my longtime favorite foodplace is
Toko Semarang at the Danckertsstraat 77, 2517 TG The Hague
http://tokosemarang.org/
Don't expect a flashy/trendy looking interior, but what they lack in 'presentation'
they more then make up with the quality/taste of the snacks
Don't forget to try their 'Lemper' - sticky rice rolls with a chicken/cocos filling-
and the Loempia Semarang -baked springrolls with a spring bamboo root/chicken filling-
Ask for the special (handmade) sauce they have in a small jar in the cooler ::)
If you're more into a 'real' restaurant to eat your Indonesian food, visit
Restaurant Dewata at the Beeklaan 269 2562 AH The Hague
http://www.dewata.nl/
Again not a flashy/trendy looking place, actually quite modest looking from the outside
The food has the same 'quiet' appearance, but the rich, yet not overly spicy taste will be a pleasant surprise
Their Tahu Gimbal - birdsnests made of tauge, shrimps and tofu, with white rice and a small bowl of sweet soy sauce -
keeps me coming back for well over 30 years now (yes, I'm a creature of habit ;) )
And oh yeah, The Hague has some real nice locations for eg fashion photography too :P

paul: superb fashion shots!
