Love the picture, Fons. You took it through a Windows obviously which reduces the optical high fidelity of the wonderful lens as if a fog kind of filter was applied. The effect suits the subject wonderfully. Thank you for opening the February thread!

February 1/28
.Poetry vs. Bureocrats 0:1.
01 02 02017
The beautiful poetic German word "Kindergarten" has found its place in many non German languages. Yet, German bureocrats started to replace this lovely designation by the more technical "Kindertagesstätte". Gosh. Why?
Have not found time and juice to post Monday and Tuesday, sorry for that.
Technical: In this situation terrible purple color fringing appeared on the printed word "Kindertagesstätte". I had to use all defringing NX-D has to offer. Is that the standard of the Neo-Noct? Am I spoiled by the 105?
-
it looks idyllic for sure!

This is the entrance of the BImA, the Federal Institution for Real Estate management of the German Government. The German Government has a lot of Real Estate, so there is a lot of management to do.
The fence belongs to the building's former use as a historic train station for a local train connecting the agricultural area between Cologne and Bonn with both cities.
Frankly I do not know why the fence is crooked and why it contains the greek symbol Phi so often.

.abandoned bus station.
03 02 02017
Since I was a kid my town is in permanent reconstruction ALL THE TIME!
The bus station has been relocated from the city center to the South of Bonn. I do not think that makes much sense if you want to encourage using the Bus instead of the car and they may after more reconstruction shift the station back to where it is needed most. Currently the city center is one huge construction site. I hope it will be for the better this time!

I saw the light today, but I had no camera on me. So I could only continue to say and repeat to say: "Look! At! That! Light!" and my daughter just said: "Paps, you said that already."
Frankly I have not seen such a light in my entire life. It was all the best lenses in the world require for the best pictures possible. All highs and lows, all detail rendening, no dust after the rain, revealing light!

I expected more fine details from the 1.4/58 Neo-Noct @f/1.4, but I see that I have to accept some halos to extract stuctures shouting "details" in the small version. When I am done with the purple fringing, not a lot of finde structures remain. Closing the aperture means less defringing and more fine structures at f/2.2 for example

Today I took some serious portraits (not shown here) with the 1.4/58G at f/1.4. Then I saw that there seems to be a misalignment between focus point and point of focus on the D500 and esp. in the near field, so I will have to calibrate...

07 02 02017
This door is low. A small child might walk in, an adult can not, a low car might drive in and park there. I guess this is some kind of garage. Very unusual for the height of the door. I was always fascinated by this non standard solution of a drive-in or drive-through. Plus it is monochromatic which is a topic I follow currently without doing it fully consciously. I could sure post one hundred shots to the "monochromatic"-thread.

John, your images with Fuji S5 are not just beautiful but prove that 6MP DX image can still go strong!
Thanks Akira and Fons.
I wouldn't 'degrade' the Fuji S5 by using the '6MP camera' terminology. The RAF files of 24.5MB and with a size of 4.256*2.848pix are cleaner and more flexible than the D700 for instance. And have a larger dynamic range.
And it is food for thought the RAW files of the Nikon D600 are not much larger with 29MB at a maximum.
-
John. The S5 has two sets of six million pixels. Half of them small. Half of them big. This is 12 Million photon counts to be stored in the RAW. Iirc there is no compression in these RAW files too.
I remember a discussion on the old NG that some of our members then carried a D2X and a S5pro, first one for fast operation, second for uncompromising IQ.
The S5pro was regarded as something like an 8 Megapixel camera.
-
Yes, I have read all these discussions. Agree with the IQ. Let's just say the Fuji S5 has a different sensor making, even today, great RAW's. It is a rather slowish camera, yes, back to the basics ;)

Opening of a large exhibition in De Pont from artist Fiona Tan. One of her works is a photo-documentary about Mount Fuji in Japan.
"Mount Fuji is an icon as well as a cliché, in roughly the same way that windmills and wooden shoes have this status with respect to the Netherlands. Ascent is a reflection on this mountain that has such great significance to the Japanese, but also a study of its visual culture and a tribute to the history of both photography and film." -- link ( https://www.depont.nl/en/exhibitions/program/release/pers/fiona-tan-2/ (https://www.depont.nl/en/exhibitions/program/release/pers/fiona-tan-2/) )

It is always good to experience different perspectives. Aside from the impressive captures of Mt. Fuji with the "diamond sun", lenticular cloud or the mountain itself glowing in red, most of the images are, as mentioned, too common and boring. The same goes with the popular Japanese tourist sites.
I always welcome foreign photographers taking pictures of such places to give fresh looks on them.

Thanks for commenting Akira. She didn't make captures of the Mt. Fuji, but collected more than 2.000 images and selected 600 for her movie.
Had a short interview with Fiona Tan. When working on the documentary she quoted Agnès Varda who said "Photography never ceases to instruct me when making films. And cinema reminds me at every instant that it films motion for nothing, since every image becomes a memory, and all memories congeal and set." While editing the movie she realized that none of the pictures show the real Mt. Fuji.
In the exposition she selected also 150 photo's, which she used in the film, and can be seen as a kind of story board.

The Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS is good in close-ups and a very suitable companion in a museum. The lens also impressed me with dark situations.
Work of Marlene Dumas: "black drawings" containing 111 drawings and is linked to her youth in South Africa.
-
John, thanks for the detail of the exhibition and letting me know about Agnès Varda. Her comment is very persuasive.
Also, thanks for the comment on my image. I thought it would be interesting to use the pine trees both as parts of the image frame and subject. The excellent flare resistance of the humble 50/1.8G helped keep the contrast.
I loved using Ais 28/2.8 as an all-round standard lens on my D40 and D7000. On a DX camera, the lens is nearly distortion-free. I miss it and would love to try it on D500. Your image is intriguing and worth enlarging. Did you use the lens on a DX camera (Fuji S5)?
-
Thanks Akira. Shot on the Df (needed the 28mm) at f/4 with nearly no PP. A bit soft in corners wide open, not alarming rather value adding. Vignetting-free at f/4. And pretty impressive with low distortion on Full Frame.
Will shortly try it on the Fuji S5. The 50/1.8 G performs very good on the Fuji S5 by the way.

John, I was in a hurry the other day. Your Crocus image has a great iridescent quality , really makes it POP. The owner of the Hotel project is racing to get the basic structure completed before the Monsoon so much of the heavy work such as digging out for the foundations and levelling was done by machines. Much of the work is done by teams of labourers. Just yesterday an organization which is trying to preserve neighborhoods contacted us for a copy of the plans and will take it up as a trial cause. I do not hold out much hope of their success :( . The Hotel guy is actually quite nice but to him (and more particularly his wife) it is all about money. This AirB&B has thrown the planners and officials for a loop. He is not calling it a Hotel but residential. I had also missed J.A.'s cool iPhone Vid. Smartphones Rule or at least starting to .
I take most images from the D500 back to neutral in CC PS and then start from there.
Thanks Fons. Just what I shoot but this has a bit more purpose since I have a copy of the approved Plans and can use images to backup any claims of his straying from Approved. I also like shooting folk ;)
