Title: Alternative use for monopod
Post by: richardHaw on November 29, 2016, 03:03:38
I have a painful achilles  tendon  :o :o :o
Good thing i have my monopod to double as my walking cane ::)

I can now fit in with all the old men here in tokyo. Now, where is my pension? I am paying hundreds of dollars monthly

Interestingly, there are walking sticks available for hikers that have a detachable top that reveals a 1/4" bolt that allows ones camera to be attached.

You have applied reverse logic here Richard.

Richard,

When I bought my tripod earlier this month Rita said "That thing better double as a walker!" Now I can use your post to verify my answer.

Thanks,

Sam

I can’t believe I am reviving such an old thread, but it seemed appropriate…

I will soon visit Yakushima island, where I will attempt to potter around on the mountains. A hiking pole is an absolute must for my broken body, but I also wanted a monopod.

Though once (a little) popular, telescopic hiking poles with a tripod mount are not easy to buy new any more. But I got lucky and found an unused one on an online market.

It’s not exactly a secure mount at the top, and the pole is pretty light. BUT, it’s better than nothing, and I will use a loop of string to anchor the pole to my upper body.

I probably could have used a monopod as a hiking pole, but I would trust something designed for the job (even if it isn’t really designed for another job).

Have a great trip to Yakushima Island.

My old Manfrotto 681B monopod is certainly strong enough to use as a walking pole, but it is very heavy as it was designed to support large/heavy cameras.

Let us know after the trip how your adapted walking pole worked for you.

Since you've already found one, I only wish you to enjoy your trip to the fabulous island.

Incidentally, I've heard good things about iFootage Cobra 2 monopod.

Yes, that's it!

I just ordered a 150cm aluminIUm :-) I will still use the hiking pole gizmo while hiking, but I like the flexibility of the Cobra the rest of the time.

I almost got the Strike, as I prefer the simpler locking mechanism, but the compacted length is considerably longer - which isn’t ideal for on the go use in Japan. I think it is about 80cm, vs 60 something cm for the Cobra.
