The unusual front element curvature reminds of a UV-Nikkor ....

Apparently the E-mount version already has the rear element almost at the mount. Maybe it is exclusively for the mirrorless cameras.
The convex front element is fairly popular now. Many manufacturers make lenses of this kind. I don't know how beneficial it is to have a convex element at the front, but apparently it is easier to clean...

Which other mounts?
This is a dedicated full frame mirrorless lens, not an adapted DSLR lens.
When Nikon does introduce an FX mirrorless camera all the third party lenses now exclusive for the Sony FE mount should also become available shortly after. So where we Sony users had to wait for years for a decent lens lineup any new full frame mirrorless platform should have an assortment of cool lenses in a matter of months.
So lenses like the Voigtlander 10, 12, 15 and now 65mm, the Zeiss Loxia and Batis lenses, Samyang 14/2.8 AF, Tokina 20/2, etc, etc give any new contender a flying start because they don't have to introduce a full lens lineup on day one. Of course they want you to buy first party lenses but they can take their time to put these on the shelfs.

I think this one is exclusive to the E mount. Note the rangefinder style placement of the aperture ring as well. However, the fact that Cosina revisits the "Macro Apo Lanthar", may raise hopes for longer focal lengths, usable on DSLR as well as mirrorless. A 125/2.5 with revised mechanics springs to mind.
Anyway, I find the Voigtländer Macro Apo Lanthar 65/2 FE Very Interesting! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

The convex front element used to fight vignette. But, to compensate for some negatives, the optical formula needs extra elements. So, such complicated optical design could be expensive for manufacturer. And for us, finally! LZ

Same here, if it is as good as the 125/2.5 it is must have lens IMHO.

Yep to correct field curvature and get enough back focal length. A Dr A W Tronnier speciality that was,
who originally designed the Apo Lanthar first and the Ultron with negative front lens....maybe a kotau
towards him, he certainly deserves that ;-)

The CONCAVE front element - in this case - is using to effectively minimize chromatic aberrations and achieve high resolving power. Usually, such complicated formula is very expensive. Used in new Zeiss Sonnar T 55/1.8 lens. LZ

The lenses with the concave front elements: Leica Summilux-M 35/1.4, Summicron 35/2.0, Zeiss Otus 85/1.4, Milvis 50/1.4 and 85/1.4, Distagon 35/1.4 ZM, Voigtlander Ultron 35/1.7, Nokton 42.5/0.95, Panasonic Lumix G Macro 30/2.8, Sony Zeiss Sonnar FE 35/2.8Z and 55/1.8Z, SEL 35/1.8, Tamron 45/1.8 to name a few.

I'm very pleased with the performance of the Sony/Zeiss Sonnar 55/1.8 ZA. It easily beats a classical 50mm double Gauss at wider apertures for resolution, and it is a great alternative, for those who want something more compact than an Otus 55/1.4 or Milvus 50/1.4.
Bokeh fans should be aware that the Sony Zeiss 55/1.8 employs aspherical elements in its' construction, that can produce onion rings in bokeh highlights.

Only A mount lenses will work on the A99 II, so the 55/1.8 ZA is out.

It depends on the flange distance. If the flange distance of E mount is longer or equal to the A one, we will see the 55/1.8 lens on the S99-2 body very soon. Otherwise, it is impossible, I am afraid. THX! LZ

Sony A mount was originally Minolta Alpha mount from the film days whose flange back is 44.5mm, whereas that of E mount is only 18mm. So there is not hope for the E mount 55/1.8 can be made into an A mount version, unfortunately.

. Impossible, indeed! Even if back element of the lens is deep, but not of 27mm deep, of course. So there will be a problem with new A99-2 line of lenses. THX! LZ

The A99 II can take Minolta autofocus A mount lenses and Sony DSLR A mount lenses, but not mirrorless lenses. Sorry, I wasn't clear enough in my orevious post.

Minolta old lenses are not up to task today, and we have very few new A lenses on the shelves. Even the giant as Sony is, can't make a full line of the lenses at once. Maybe they have something up to their sleeves? LZ
