These proportions are not at all unusual for a web community, Frank.
However, 818 non-paying out of 942 members is not what the admins had hoped for. We manage to scrape by, so a crisis is avoided, but in a longer perspective, the situation might be untenable.

G'day. Can't remember if I've posted or not, but I don't think so. I mainly read and get inspiration from the comments of others for equipment or photographic subjects that interest me. I really appreciate the time that the more experienced members donate to this forum.
I am from New Zealand and am retired, finding that I have a lot less time now to do photography than I thought I would. My interest in photography dates back to the late 1970s and an F2 (which I no longer have). I presently have a D800 I bought second hand in the hopes I would grow into it, and am slowly building up a collection of suitable lenses.

I would offer that my paid membership is one of the greatest values I know of - I get a lot for a very reasonable price.
I don't post much, but I enjoy the insights everyone else brings. I am proud to be a member of this community.

Just a background information: Being an NG Supporter literally means one subscribes to support the site, there aren't any hidden strings or obligations attached. Thus zero posts are not a drawback - not everyone is comfortable posting or sharing pictures.
The forum software does have an option to remove inactive members. It will not be exercised.

So I go into Taco Bell and place an order. The tab is $6.66. I exclaimed in mock horror. The lady waiting on me after being assured I was was a joking told me some people who frequent this Taco Bell actually order something addition so the total is not "666". :)

So if only 1 member per year tours with me - I will have work for the next 942 years. That sound incredible and I must be the busiest tour guide in the world. So you see- I am special :P
Frank - every forum has plenty members or subscribers who simply visit a few times and get occupied elsewhere. This forum is lucky - one of the others I frequent has something like 20 000 members - it's a free site - and most days there isn't a single post. I must add it wasn't like that before - it was probably one of the busiest sites in the world at one point - but life happens and things change. And then there was Facebook...

Frank, how long did you have to wait for the "funny" numbers to come up?
In the morning we had 57 at the end so I logged in two hours later to find 65.
I waited two minutes then.

Compared to other forums I see a generally very high quality level of the posts here.
Of course we have you gear heads who really make a difference in testing and mending equipment.
But currently I also see a lot of very good photographers posting a lot of very good photos

There are photographers here whose work I generally disregard. That does not mean their work is generally disregarded or ignored by others. That is only one example.

Many qualifications may be considered, yet the best way to ignore people's visual output, is to pass-by with a comment on a previous post.

As for me, I am happy to have discovered NG.
I am thoroughly enjoying involvement with the members.
I am very glad to have become a paid up supporter, I do not seek or need much outside NG to bring on my photography skills.

I asked the Admins few weeks ago how I could renew my subscription.
I don't believe I got a reply (though may have missed this). I'm ready & willing to renew.
Meanwhile other similar sites have an easy-to-find icon to let anyone easily make a payment/donation etc
Easy enough to put on our site?

As a Dutchman yourself, you probably would have understood the page in Dutch too :D
I got it presented in Dutch, though. But easily understandable for most Europeans at least.
I believe previous Paypal activities (in the current computer session) have a bearing on what language is used. As said, Andrea will look into this and should be able to modify the forum scripts.

it may depend on your browser settings - I was using an old iPad, iOs7 & Safari and what it showed at the time definitely wan't in English.
However as Bjorn observed, I took a guess at the likely options and found myself on Paypal, where I authorised it.
What I hadn't spotted at the time was that I'd set up a repeating annual payment. Going back into the NG menus, I see this is a tick-box option (it was late, and I was tired....). I think this makes sense for the site, after all we all value it and this is a fair price

I believe the 'repeated annual payment' is set up as a standard for Nikon Gear.

This is whats going wrong as far as we know:
The problem only occurs when people remove their cookies, when the PayPal cooky is still present everything works as designed.
So the workaround is to log into PayPal before subscribing when the PayPal cookie has been removed recently.

If no action is taken this 14% rate will decrease even more with time.
So, the question is : When the situation will become untenable ?
Second question : How to motivate more members to be financially involved in the site ?
It would be interesting to see more ''non paying members'' giving their opinion in this thread.

Earlier in life I was working for a photo site that had 100.000 members, later they had 1 Million and sold the operation.
Their conversion rate was at 13% and they managed to crank a very healthy profit from that.
Their minimum charge was 4€/month and they had some advanced plans too.
What I like to point out is:
1) we are a non profit operation
2) we should closely watch our costs and then possibly raise the annual contribution if necessary
To me 14% seem a fairly reasonable amount compared to people registered.
The site is open. Noone needs to register unless they want to post
More than half of the registered people do not participate actively.
How many of them visit regularly?
How many are just dead accounts?

I registered in order to answer a request for the identification of a plant. I'm not sure that I would have paid for the privilege.

Community support comes in many ways, some do it with great technical or photographic content, some by subscribing and some do both :)
The crew has no intentions of making money on NG, all we would like in return is a healthy and happy community which we can enjoy ourselves as well online and in real life during the NG events like the amazing event recently hosted in Scotland.
Our server hosting fees are payed a year in advance and I'm proud the say that with the latest subscriptions (renewals) we now have the funds needed to continue the current hosting plan for 2017. So a big thanks to those whom subscribed or renewed their subscriptions the last few months!!!!
With a growing community the need for a bigger hosting plan also arrises so we're saving up additional revenue so we can scale up whenever the need arrises.
