July 1st 2016 - Cold, cloudy, rainy.
A busy day, and a busy week. Time to relax with the Heligon...
The Dypsis Lutescens or the Areca palm prefers the sun and not a shadow place....

Nice interaction with the cat, Fons! The hydrangea in the background work really nicely.
John, the obsolete camera does the trick! Downloading your image and browsing in TWIN UI of WIndows10 shows the image in a very different color balance. In which color space did you save the image?
-
Thanks Akira.
That was Adobe RGB. Forgot to do the Save for Web which translates it to sRGB

Thanks, John, for taking your time. Now the discrepancy is gone.
Bruno, I like this humorous snapshot. Well spotted and captured!
Frank, hope the squirrel would rest in peace.
Buddy, the farm house looks nice. There should be a lot of room for renovation.
-
Interesting harvest of different images, and styles the first day of the summer month.
Frank that 58mm on the D3 does well at wide open, the exotic plant is a Lonicera, a common climbing plant in wooded area with a delicious scent.
John i see no difference in firefox in colours.
Good move Buddy, Akira thank you.
-
On color managed systems with color managed browsers no difference can be detected.
Wonderful contributions for the first of a new moth. Let us keep that level!
-
Beautiful catch, Bruno. I think he prefers the local seefood ;)
Nice, surroundings and house, Buddy ! You are going to be a farmer as well?
That's a nice Honeysuckle (Lonicera), Frank. Love those flowers. But they don't love my garden of negligence, have not been able to keep them ;)
-
The yard is a wilderness, noone cares, the plants plant themselves...
-
Thanks Akira.

Possibly the differences between RGB and sRGB are bigger when moving on to reds

Nice, surroundings and house, Buddy ! You are going to be a farmer as well?
For now I will leave the farming to the experts John :)

Today there can only be one topic!
Will the Germans defeat Italy?
Will the Germans surrender?
Will it be a boring game decided by penalties?
Will Germany humiliate Italy like they did with Brazil in Brazil (7:1)?
Will Müller wake up and shoot three goals?
Will the Italians lie on the floor weeping in the end or will it be the Germans?
My son, fracophil as he is, went to a shop to buy an official German "Le Mannschaft" T-Shirt "Triomphe"

And now for something completely different!

July 3. Went to a local exhibition under the title "To your own good" - about alternative forms of health treatment (or quackery..) back in time put in the context of the "scientific" forms of treatment.
#1 Volta crosses,
#2 various kinds of helpful(?) mixtures,
#3 old pharmacy drawer - I assume three crosses means extra attention is required :)

Interesting pharmacy, very soft light, Lars.
Thanks Frank - nice shots from the mass today .. especially a wonderful group portrait. I'm curious - are these shot with the D500?
-
D500 & Af-S 1.4/24mm is a dream team, just like the D600 & Ai-S 1,4/35mm
of the five pics I published up there
1, 2, 3 go to: D600 & 1.8/85G
4, 5 go to D500 & 1.4/24G
I guess that the 1.8/24G will behave similarly.

Testing the Voigtlander Apo Lanthar 90/3.5 with different close-up lenses. The lens is extremely sharp in the 50-90cm zone, without close-up lenses. Close-up lenses do not really improve image quality. Best results I got was with the T4 reversed...

Nice garden stuff Fons. The D3 is the same sensor as the D700 not?
i
They say, the software in both cams are different for certain, high iso is different, since i had the d700 before, colours are different.
-
You find the D3 worse compared to the D700?
-
D3 very nice camera with a film like rendering, it appears to me the d700 was a more modern camera.
-
The D3 has rather cool tones but very consistent. If you know her you know how she will show
the colors.
-
With the D3 I use rhe "cloudy" WB setting by default. In most situations I hardly need to adjust WB afterwards.
One thing I like about the D3 files is that I can recover almost 3 stops out of the whites/bright areas. Compared to the D800 it makes sense to expose for the shadows where the D800 should clearly be exposed for the highlights.
On one side that is an odd choice because it also means that the D800 allows shorter exposures times which would again be beneficial for action photography.
The D3 on the other hand shows the tendency to produce a recoverable sky in nearly all situations
-
"cloudy" as default ... never came up with that idea!
I use "A" and several predefined settings I custom measured for several situations
-

That's not my experience with the D800E. I can recover also a lot of stops out of the whites and bright areas, which is the reason I always underexpose. Also valid for the Df. The D700 had much less dynamic range.

Slush means melting snow or ice, in particular it means some desert like icecream melted in a container for consumption.
Basically, sweetened, flavoured, coloured, semi-frozen water. No "cream" contents whatsoever.
In Canada, land of slush and snow, those drinks are known as "slushies". Winnipeg is known as The "Slushie Capital of Canada"

Funny. I went the other way: bought the 1.4/85D, saw, that I did not use it, although 85 always was my favourite FL, sold it. Tested the 1.4/85G via NPS, did not like it. Then the 1.8/85G came out. Went to my brick & mortar dealer ASAP. and it became my always on on the D3, just like the 1.8/85D was since F4 days in the film era

-
Yes. True.
Didn't like my 1.8/85G, sold it and swapped it for the 1.4/85 D.
From my 2 years with my D3 I found that lenses that work particularly well (in the range I regularly use) are the:
16mm f3,5
20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD
AF-D 17-35 f2,8 (wish I owned one)
Any 50 or 55 mm really, but I prefer the
5cm f2 Nikkor-S
50mm f1,8 AF-S
55mm f1,2
55mm f3,5
AF-D 85 f1,4 (liked it better then 85 f1,8 AF-D or AF-S)
105 f2,5 (any)
105 f2,8 AF-S micro Nikkor
AF-D 80-200 f2,8
135mm f3,5 Nikkor-Q.C (should be the same for Ai and Ai-S)
200mm f4 Nikkor-.C (sharper then later Ai or Ai-S)
I tried quite a few other lenses, but for these the viewfinder gives me the best feedback for when focus is acquired, and I get colors and contrast that hardly needs post processing.
Just a personal observation though.

Nice Horror Story?
There is a war and people die every day. War against nature: 7 Million direct deaths per year through air pollution.
1 Million deaths per year through traffic. Several hundred thousands through war. Millions by cigarretts and alcohol.
A few thousands through terrorism and other forms of crime.
Every life matters!

Nice details Frank.
Indeed D600 is a very good camera.
D600 - Angenieux 35-70/2.5
The D600 cuts it IQ wise, the D500 is much better in AF and (sic!) MF too
plus all the fifth gen goodies like color consistency over a huge range of ISO and light sources.
So what we need are two more full frame fifth gen cameras:
a D780 = a D600 in a D500 body (transcending the D600) and
a D850 = an A7R2 in a D500 body (transcending the D810)
PS: even with the FM-2 on furking film I can still see the superior IQ of the 4/300PF compared to the 1.4/35 Ai-S which is still a super great performer.

July 18th 2016 Sunny and warm (at last)
The Japanse Spindle ( or Euonymus japonicus var. Ovatus Aureus). was purchased in the eighties of last century as a decoration plant for my apartment. Later I bought a larger house and early nineties I planted the small plant in my garden as it did not flourish all too well. Over the years it has grown to a massive tree of more than 5 meters, especially helped by our soft winters. Around July-August the small white flowers attract lots of native bees, and it's a joy to watch the plant (tree) which is partly covering the terrace by now.

Too early to tell to come to a definitive conclusion, colours seem a bit on the harsh side, will have to spend more time and try different sensors.
This is the chipped sl-II version with the knurled zoom ring, well-built, snap-on cap doesnt fit that well with the sunhood on.
May add like it better with the aperture open than stopped down.

hard to focus wide open what i see in the viewfinder doesnt correspond with the actual, i have similar issue with the zf 35 f/2 wide open. Maybe coma sets the focus off at near limit distance.
-
Thanks Fons, I have the SLII with the normal focus ring. Usually I take HN-7 with stepdown ring as sun hood (or stepup with HN-24) in which case the cap is not needed. Flare can be annoying.
Wide open I like it too. It excels wide open in low light. When stopping down the lens gets very sharp, with a very high resolution, and indeed compares with the CV90/3.5 and with the 80/2.8. Bokeh compares with the older Nikkor 5.8cm 1.4 according to some reviewers.

very ripe goose berries on 21 July 2016, had to select them carefully and throw out a lot.
-
Thanks Paco.
I had been thinking about the orientation but that has two main drawbacks (for my feeling).
First the light and colours, coming from above with the sun close to it's highest point. This influences the green especially. Changing the orientation would not feel good. (perhaps it could work in B&W were a light source is not influenced by colour)
Secondly, when in a portrait mode, the framing and the image is not working in the same way with that view. The space to the right, is not really filled in to make it balanced. That would need a different approach.
I did however take another flower in the 'portrait'-mode, but with a slightly different interpretation ;)

The first portrait is very Nice Frank. Not sure what went wrong with the pano on the right side with the strong blue/violet overcast. Overexposed?
-
Thanks for all your good wishes!

Hope you get well soon, Thomas!

no. Underdeveloped. I tried to take a short cut letting the pano software do the RAW development.
better to first properly create two TIFFs from the RAWs, then stitch them.
The orange head in the orange train car. Yea. Love the picture.
EDIT: Here a better mixdown from RAW via TIFF...

It is roughly 90 years old. A very rare kind of "Kontor" standing table.
I plan to use it as my place to edit pictures and write.

Thanks. Yes, it's hard to beat this with any other lens. Must have it Ai'd as I can only use it on the Df right now.

Lol - your picture made my day even more favourable.
There is a Pokémon-Go Arena and an Ingress portal directly in front of my hospital room window.
Funny studies.
Need a Df and a 300PF...

Armando, I like the whole. Nice atmosphere and flavor from another time. I will be interested in how did you manage the lighting.

Fons. The first thought entering my mind: Where is the cat?
-
Thanks Armando and Paco. What do you mean with 'makes sense'?
Armando, very nice light indeed.
Interesting entrance, Fons.
-
I ask because I explained my reaction to the image as "busy clean": it is full of details with multiple subjects and behind a fence to round it up, but it appears clean and easy to read and navigate.
In resume, I asked because I tried to explain it with to opposite words.
-
Ah, I understand now ;)
Yes, these are guarded parking places for bikes surrounded by fences. Did a lot of test-shots with the goal to show the massivity of that parking lot.
With regard to distance and lenses I think the 200/2 is able to get enough distance between fore-and background in showing details and bokeh. And that makes it clean I guess.
Another view..

I thought was more elaborated looking at the angle of the light the low contrast in the face. I like it even more now :)
-
Akira, the sunrise is very compelling. I like your choice of putting the sun in the center and I´m in love with the half invisible roofs. Love it.
Will you consider cropping some of the blue sky to enhance the contrast between the oranges and the deep blues -some 16/9 ratio...-
Thanks for sharing it!

searching for photogenious industrial spots (mobile phone drive by shot - re-visit looks promising)

July 30. Been away on holiday for some days. Playing around with some indoor shooting - I like coffee and got myself a new cup. Made by a local pottery maker. Deep cobalt blue.
-
Pots and Müesli bowls are special items if you use them often.
With life passing I try to get rid of all non special items and people.
Fewer but more deeply felt coonection.
Love that cobalt blue.
Cobalt is rarer than Lithium. We need both of them if we want to replace gasoline and diesel with electric driving.
-
Fons, beautiful ribbed dome!
Thomas, glad to know you can go out and shoot again now!
Lars, nice coffee cup. I like the texture. You have a good taste (pun intended, why not!).

Paco, thanks for the comment. That makes sense. Here's a cropped version which is slightly slimmer than 16:9.

Lava????

Lava????
Something molten into the asphalt. The orange parts look like industrial fabric - needs 1:1 pixel representation, at the edge of iPhone resolution.
Not sure what happened - there was no ash, only these cinder like black things.
