Title: Experiments in color
Post by: Akira on June 19, 2016, 02:26:32
The mixed lighting created interesting effects.

I like the noirish mood these pictures evoke, with the colorful artificial light accenting the darkness.

Thanks, Tom.  The mixed lighting on this house was quite inspiring.

Post by: Mongo on June 22, 2016, 13:07:35
Mongo agrees with Tom - the mood created by this combination of lighting and colours is quite a feature on its own.

$1 - the defined lines of colour and geometric shapes together with framing work very well

$2 - Mongo really likes the combination that these two deep colours create against a black BG/surround. Particularly like the fusing of one colour into the other. Framing also very well worked out.

Exposure is spot on on both.

Well seen and produced Akira.

Mongo, glad you like the image and thank you for the comments.

The second image was actually a retry of the one posted in the past here and to FZ.  The image was shot with D7000.  This time I tried it with D750, and its superior high ISO performance and the pliability of its NEF enabled the further experiments of heavier processing.

Interesting pictures.

I am just wondering whether the difference of colours are due to the lights or actual different colours ?

Cheers, Francis.
Title: Re: Experiments in color
Post by: BW on June 22, 2016, 21:46:52
It might be something of both. It depends on the light source and the chosen shutter speed. If the ss are shorter than the frequency of the light source one might get just one wave length instead of white light. Only the photographer can answer that question. Nice effect Akira.
Title: Re: Experiments in color
Post by: Akira on June 22, 2016, 22:21:47
Francis and Børge, thank you for stopping by and commenting.

The "difference" of  the color is definitely due to the different light sources: incandescent, fluorescent (both seen on the house) and mercury llamps (cast from the right-hand side of the image).  But the color temperature and the hue were heavily tweaked, and the saturation and the vibrancy sliders were set to 100% in CC2015 to enhance the adverse color and the difference of the light sources to make the image more abstract.
Title: Re: Experiments in color
Post by: rosko on June 22, 2016, 22:32:08
Thanks, Børge and Akira for your explanations.

Actually, this is what I thought, but wasn't sure as the difference is quite amazing.

I also think that the incidence of rays and angle of reflection influences colours rendition (hue) too, according the watcher' position ?
Title: Re: Experiments in color
Post by: Akira on June 22, 2016, 22:39:10
I also think that the incidence of rays and angle of reflection influences colours rendition (hue) too, according the watcher' position ?

That may not be the case.  All the light "rays" were diffused well enough and none are polarized, if I'm not mistaken.

First shot is a beautiful postcard Akira. Not very often we see colour combinations like this. I would have preferred it even more if the tree weren't there, but still love it.
Title: Re: Experiments in color
Post by: Akira on June 23, 2016, 04:17:38
Anirban, thanks for the comment.  Here in Japan, mixed lightings are not very rare, especially in larger cities.  So, it is interesting to tweak the image like this and to see the results.  Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time or an appropriate tool to cut the tree.  :D

Post by: golunvolo on June 23, 2016, 14:09:28
Akira, love your tweaks. They work, specially the first one or me. Even thou I tend to minimalism, all the parts work in harmony in the first. Second works as well but it looks tilted to my eye -weird, because it shouldn´t, there is no reason :) -

Title: Re: Experiments in color
Post by: Akira on June 23, 2016, 17:42:31
Paco, glad you like them.  I would have to confess that it was tricky to "level" the second image, because the angle of the stairs, the camera angle and the stand point to include all the elements I wanted didn't coincide easily.   :o

First one is terrific - outstanding color combination and contrast.
In the second shot I don't see prominence of any particular color, unlike rest of the shots in this series.

Sten and Anirban, thanks for the comments.

Oh, I simply love the first one Akira. The woman in red is like a red berry in a meadow of greens.

That was exactly the inspiration.  Glad you sensed that.

First one is terrific - outstanding color combination and contrast.

I would have to agree.  But, hey, this is a thread for the "experiments".  The unprocessed image was way more boring, and the reflection on the entire facade made of glass made the interior look washed out.  I tried to raise the contrast by tweaking not only the "contrast" slider but also the "dehaze" one in ACR.

I see a lot of similarities between #1 and #2. Basic composition changes however from  rectangle in the first to a triangle in the second but both use red as the lead colour.

What is the importance of the prominent NPC signs in the third image? You do seem to exist in a colourful city ...

The point of the image is various repetition of squares, triangles, diamond shapes, etc.  The NPC sign would be included as part of that rhythm, but the sign could stand out a bit too much...

Thank you, Peter, for stopping by.

Since I briefly tried a Hasselblad during the film days, I have always been interested in the square format.  And I somehow believe that the square format is one promising way for the abstraction.

But I have tried to stick to the full image frames of the sensors, which I consider to be part of this particular experimental concept.

Beautiful, how did you do this?

Thank you, Anthony.

What you are seeing in the image are: a brown (not white) chicken egg, a piece of kitchen paper of the towel-like texture and a clear glass bottle.

I happened to find that the brown egg looks strongly saturated red under the 365nm UV flashlight with the Baader U filter.   So, I put it on the kitchen paper and added a bottle to make the image more like the traditional still life oil paint.  The image was shot in total darkness, and the only light source was the UV flashlight with the filter.  There was very faint visible light leak which cast the shadow of the egg.  The kitchen towel fluoresced in faint blue.  During the process, I just raised the exposure a bit and trimmed the frame.  So, there was no significant manipulation.

The camera is Sigma fp and the lens is CRT Nikkor 55/1.2 shot at f2.0.

After the first attempt, I found that a boiled egg with the shell removed fluoresce in lime green!    So, I decided to add lime green to the original color scheme.   The blue looks different, but the basic set up was the same as that for the first attempt.
