June 1st 2016  A grey day

Overcast, little colour.

On the market. One of these doubtful moments whether colour or Black and White is more suitable.  The B&W seems to give more expression.

Yesterday UPS left something on my doorstep.

I proudly present:

My first camera, with motordrive, and my very first zoom lens.

This, along with a Nikon FM2, a 17mm f3,5 Tokina lens, a 50mm f2 Ai and 55mm f3,5 Ai micro Nikkor formed my complete photography kit for almost 10 years from 1995 to 2005.

I loved the lens, but after buying the 80-200 f2,8 AF-D it did not see much use anymore. Now that my lens kit has grown and I no longer take "just" a 20mm, 55mm and 105mm with me I found the big AF 80-200 to be bigger then I'd like. It just takes up a lot of space that is also occupied by a 16mm Fish-eye Nikkor, the 20, 55, 105 and occasionally the 200mm f4 Nikkor-Q.C or any of the 135mm lenses. Add to that both a digital and an analogue camera and I would either need a bigger bag, or need to scale down in packing size.

So, with that not really in my mind, I started to miss the mechanical perfection of th e80-200 f4 Ai-S recently. I used the Nikon FM on a few trips, and it just didn't feel the same without the zoom, so I decided NOT to look for one on ebay.

After Kristina telling me a hundred times that I really should not look at the 80-200 f4 Ai-S that much on ebay (and that I should stop drooling on one or two occasions) I accidentally made a lowball offer on a lens from a German seller.

Reviewing the offer I thought of 3 things:
-I really miss this lens
-No way is that seller going to accept my offer
-So what do I tell Kristina?

The seller did not flog me. He accepted my offer within minutes, and while I was driving to Kristinas parents. So I did not see that I actually bought the lens until some time later. When I did I instantaniously paid for the lens and told Kristina that a "mishap" had happened and that I had no clue as to the how and why.

I already made some boring test chart shots at my usual working distances to see how this copy performs, and I'm thrilled. This lens could very well become a frequent resident of my camera bag, depending on where I go and how light I want to pack.

What I still want to do is take some real photos with the lens and see how it performs. OoF rendering and such. Sharpness is well up there with the 135mm and 200mm primes I tested it against.

More to follow soon...

Buddy: The noise comes from editing. As you can imagine the original file is a no contrast histogram peak kind of thing.

Genesis:
a) ooc
b) auto contrast
c) RAW development & edit

Yes Frank. I wanted to have it more or less comparable. Usually I make up my mind after a few days.

Interesting story Buddy. Good luck with the camera and with the 80-200/4  !

We have some wateroverloads here....  heavy rains, and more to come.  Floating buckets....

John, this exact camera has served me well ever since 1995 :) The lens is new to me though. Sold off my original one, but I'm glad to have this version back in my kit now. As far as non-CPU data goes, i use it as the 200 f4 already in the list and it works fine

I cannot prove it scientifically but with zooms I get good (perhaps the best) results entering the lowest focal lenght.  35mm/2.5 for the Angenieux zoom, 35/3.5 for the 35-70 ai and 80/4.5  for the 80-200/4.5N. It are unique combinations as well ;)  Combined with the CPU'd 17-35 these are the only zooms in frequent use.

It's one of the best manual wide zooms of Nikon I would say. Very bright images. I love the rendering and colours. Very sharp in a natural way. Little distortion.

For me personally one drawback in general use is the close focus distance of 1 meter, but sharpness and the possibility to crop solves that in a way, if needed.

June 2nd 2016.  Cloudy, but not raining (yet)

A bit of boring photowork. City Hall wants for promote small gardens in the streets. The local Stadsfarm, run by volonteers, is also making special wooden crates or boxes for plants. A few volunteers are skilled carpenters.

City Hall plans now to order a number of these for use in the city. Hopefully the photo's can persuade them in ordering larger quantities ;)

Frank, that people in motion photo looks really nice. Personally I would have cropped a bit off the top, even though this facetted view also has it's merits (and a bike)

It reminds me a bit of a more mundane photo I took a while back

Catching up with June 2, which I spent driving back from Dijon. I could only snap a few shots late in the evening when back home. Work is eating all of my time these days, I've only been skimming the thread but I see very interesting roses.

Both shots handheld,  D750 with 50/1.2: night of the snails, on the street in front of the house, and the welcome back from the cat.

This morning the weather was ideal: a bright foggy morning. Swallows came up to 1,5 meters to my balcony and I took 142 shots , wonderful shots of swallows entering the nest, in fast flight, frame filled at 85mm and D500 and many more.

Then I checked ... pity ... I hat the camera still set to "M" 6400 ISO f=1.4 and 40th of a second from the night before.

All blown out, all white. Afterwards I took some lesser shots. All crops.

No problem. There will be other bright foggy mornings with lots of swallows and all settings right!

PS: These are "black martins" or "Eurasian swifts". They are the most erratic flyers and one of the fastest flying birds. BUT: I have a colony of a few hundred in my backyard so I have lots of them to practice my birding skills

Thanks Peter.  According to the Dutch biologist Midas Dekkers, four is the ideal number. So still room for one ;)

Cats are very suitable for photographers. They hardly ever pose, so you need to react quickly, with manual focus, have difficult furs for sensors and light measurement *especially the black one, and, for me, the ideal subject to have an idea what a lens is up to.

Catching up with June 3. We have extremely tiny Forget-me-not in the garden, check the size of the flower in front of the grass for a measure of how tiny they are. Trying alternate focus points and framing. D750 105/2.8VR

The swifts are only so near when the weather is such. On a normal morning they are 20 or 25 meters
up i  the air and flying faster. No chance then.

Those forget-me-not surely are tiny - I especially like #1.

Frank - swifts are one of my favorite birds. I have tried photographing them myself - they often fly close to my balcony. But wrong camera for the job (Fuji X-E1) and I'm a poor BIF shooter as well. In danish they are called Mursejler.

John - I would like that shot even without the flowers   :)

June 4. It is very hot in Denmark these days - seems we get all the sun and heat while central parts of Europe gets all the water and thunder storms. A few indoor shots of my Brassia orchid still setting flowers - and now also a nice scent. Each flower spans approx. 20 cm.

June 5 - national celebration of Constitution Day. I visited Roskilde.

Roskilde Cathedral is on UNESCO's list of world heritage.

The bronze relief is part of the large gate of the cathedral.

Public political meetings is tradition on this day.

The viking ship is Havhingsten.

Thanks.  Well actually I did hesitate when I saw the lens a year ago, because it was too expensive  to my feeling.  Great was my surprise to discover a month ago, it was still unsold, and at a 50% discount, and I didn't hesitate one milli-sec.   ;)

If weight is a concern Frank you should look for the Ai or Ais, it's 500 gram less ;)

yes, the 200 / 2 is perhaps a nearly perfect lens. But i would not buy it because it is too heavy for my. And too expensive. :( Perhaps i can try it on one of  the next fotowalks?

Beautiful Swarms, Lars.

For winemaking? That's strange. The juice of the berries was used here as a coloring for wool in the textile-industry. The old Indians used it already for the clothing and their skin, so, it's not that toxic, I think ;)

Thanks John - according to what I've read the use of it for wine coloring has probably stopped and one reason is the toxicness. Maybe it's more safe for textile coloring as you usually don't eat it...  ;)  It also have medical properties but apprently not something for amateurs to experiment with as it caused many incidents of poisoning in the US in the 19'th century.

John, excellent story on how you got yours. Patience is a virtue.

Harald, nice work with the 75-150 f3,5. I heard a lot of good words about that lens, but decided against it and in favor of an 80-200 f4 because I really need that long end of the lens and 150mm just is a bit too short.

It depends on the job.  In a small room and acting anonymously is not the playground with the 200/2  ;)

Thanks Frank. Great colours with yours.

Another opening of an exposition in Museum De Pont, this time an interesting one, for a change. Slave city from Joep van Lieshout. It's in exposition in view of the Geronimo Bosch 500 anniversary year.

D600- 80/2.8   (large lenses are not allowed, for whatever reason)  ;)

Fons, a lost cow? I see the fence though. I once met a cow in the middle of the forest. I was on my way down a hill at 80 km/hour and needed to brake full force to prevent "impact damage" as Nikon calls it.

Which brings me to the 200mm f2 in small rooms musings. I guess the reason why they do not allow big lenses in that exposition will also be to prevent impact damage. Look at how fragile that construction is!  :o

It looks like an interesting work of art and you gave it a very own look cropping that detail out of the whole. Interesting take. It certainly works in a commercial sense because it makes me curious as to what else there is to see.

Harald, the 200 f2 is smaller and lighter? Compared to what  ;D
I'm afraid that, as good as the 75-150 might be, it just will not see much use in my bag. It could replace the 135mm f3,5 and add versatility, but it would have one hell of a lens to beat. The 135mm f3,5 Nikkor-Q.C is every bit as impressive as the 105mm f2,5 Nikkor-P. Disadvantages of both is the minimum focus distance which I solve by bringing a PK-11.

Thanks Buddy.  I got an answer earlier:  large lenses (+100mm) were too intimidating. Perhaps their policy changes. In the past I had to put al my bags and coats in the locker. To prevent that, I go as 'light' as possible ;)

It's an interesting exposition, done by Atelier van Lieshout, I don't like to spoil it. There is a whole philosophy behind it. The mankind being slaved... etc. etc.    Wrote a small article about it. http://tilburgers.nl/grote-expositie-van-joep-van-lieshout-in-de-pont/ (http://tilburgers.nl/grote-expositie-van-joep-van-lieshout-in-de-pont/).

Sometimes the visitors are more interesting than the art-objects ;)

I always liked (and still like) the works of Jheronimous Bosch. 500 years ago he was a visionary who searched for the boundaries between reality and religion, between social acceptance and exclusion. In that light I find the thematic of the exposition fitting and interesting. I also know some of the works of van Lieshout. I always found van Lieshout an excellent architect. As an Artist in the true sense of the word, he rather invents meaning then distill it in his works.

Unfortunately, after reading the article on the exposition I'm afraid the reference to WWII is too far fetched and the whole body of art would be much much stronger had van Lieshout concentrated on the essence of the title SlaveCity.

He could instead have addressed the slavery and reduction of mankind to part of the global economy more directly and controversely by relating it to media consume and how this reduces humans to "less-then-individuals" as well as "glass puppets" which could be seen as assets to the advertisement industry instead of linking back to historic events. It would, in my opinion, have given the installation a far stronger message.

With that in mind, I really like how strong your image is with the lady that looks at her smartphone where she could instead look at the installation in front of her, the drinking couple and the outsiders. Your image conveys the message better then the explanation van Lieshout gives in your article ;)

Thanks Frank - the diversity of plants is quite fascinating and botanical gardens are interesting.

Speaking of special plants and botanical gardens - the botanical garden in Copenhagen have had great success with a very special plant that just had the 3rd flower flower since 2012 - the Amorphophallus Titanum. The latin name that includes "phallus" has given it its Danish name .. but in English called "corpse flower" because it smells like rotten flesh .. not a charming flower.

It was 191 cm when it reached its maximum height in Copenhagen. There is a time lapse video..

An unexpected and unprepared moment (because I only had the Df and the Ang. with me) when I met the local  beekeeper.

He uses a special natural beehive, with the same form as in nature, giving a much larger production of Honey, but more difficult to get it out.

He lifted the hive to show the bee-population (around 20.000)

Thanks, Lars. I picked it up for that but I'm often surprised too. It gives a 20+MB DNG file but the in camera jpg is most of the time good enough with a few tweaks from the basic phone editor.

This lens seems to be very interesting on the D600. I am tempted to buy the 1.4/58mm but the 1.2/55 seems to be a very interesting option too...

The 55mm f1,2, any version really, is a very interesting lens. As well as a lens I use a lot. It is usable wide open already, but becomes really sharp and contrasty at f2 and then turns into a very well controlled sharp lens at f5,6, so you could use it dreamy/swirly and glowing at f1,2, decied to use the still limited DoF with a very sharp subject at f2 or make excellent landscape shots at f5,6. Everything goes.

I know Chris Dees also likes his copy, and he recently had a copy for sale so you might contact him about that to see if he still has it.

John, lovely smooth background rendering. You hit the focus on both, which is quite good knowing how the DoF is thinner then what the focus screen on your Df shows you.

Frank, looking forward to what you can do with all those rolls of film :)

If however you are after a lens with a unique and special (read creative) look, you might want to either pick up the 55mm f1,2 or go all the way and look for a 5,8cm f1,4 Nikkor-S. That one will have to be converted to Ai if it has not been done by the previous owner. Ai conversion should be about 30 minutes work and I could help you with that if you decide to go that route.

The PF is an "E" type. I can to set the aperture on a body that supports "E" type apertures and then I use the lens as a fixed aperture lens. I guess I will fix it to f=4.0 for usage on the FM-2. Did not yet think about how this will affect measuring. I simply take a digital body with me as a light meter for the FM-2...

First encounter:

1) The camera is much heavier than I remember her.
2) The sound is very loud and snappy. I remember her much more discreet.
3) I entered the red light district. My old FM-2 did sure not have +0- in RED!

I have to look that up.

I have to look that up.

The FM2 always had a very distinct sound. I really like it around 1/15th and again around 1/125th and 1/250th.
It was never quiet though.

At 540 grams it is about 2/3rds on the way to a Nikon F3 and half a Nikon F Photomic. That is without the MD-12. With an MD-12 and 8 eneloops it will be quite  abrick. Excellent old-school-VR

As to the red lights, the FE2 has a match needle. The FM and FM2 always had the red +0- on the left hand side.

E-type apertures?  :o ???

The camera will meter with the lens wide open, shoot with the minimum aperture. Unless you wedge something in between the aperture lever on the lens. Things levered in there can fall out and end up wedged in the shutter. A nice 300mm f4,5 ED-IF costs about $150 and is fully functional on the FM2 ;) (the ED non-IF is optically superior though)

No need for such measures, with E-aperture the lens has no aperture lever and stays wide open when it does not receive an electrical command signal. This is similar to earlier digital bodies that do not support e-aperture.

I must say that the FM-2 finder is currently harder to focus for me than the D500 VF. I guess this will change when the diopter arrives.

Optically it involved a "black box", a bicycle and a suitcase  :o

Bruno, thank you. Yes, very welcoming indeed.

John, it's not winter yet, but in October it will be, and that's when things are about to unfold (and you will most likely be pestered with baby photos).
That Zeis Triotar looks interesting. Similar kind of rendering as the NKJ 10,5cm f4 Nikkor-T which is based on the same optical design.
Ever tried the 135mm f3,5 Nikkor-Q? Can be found for $50 or less, but renders in a similar fashion and is incredibly sharp, even wide open.
Nice (double) exposure with the 55mm f1,2 :)

Fons, that is a very convincing alligator leather camera bag :D

Frank, I can really recommend buying a 55mm f1,2 nikkor of any vintage. It is indeed a fairytale lens, and I could show scores of fairytale photos I made with the lens ever since I owned a copy.It is my 2nd most used lens, after the 105mm f2,5

Thanks Hugh.  It really is like new, even the glass. It is the T-coated version, one of the last they made.

With the standard thin M42/Nikon F adapter it goes to infinity and behaves like an AI lens on the Nikon Camera's, when leaving the aperture wide open at f/4.  Changing aperture (at the front like the 28/4 PC lens) implies changing the settings, I usually use the compensating exposure for that, or adapt the camera settings  of the lens to the aperture in use.

June 22. Summer solstice passed yesterday - the summer is moving too fast. The Linden trees have set flowers and the trees have a fascinating humming sound from bees.

Your Garden is a waterway now? That is something different.

In past times my Grandparents house was only reachable per boat once or twice a year.

It seems the high waters of the Rhine river have been less high for the last 20 years...

Is the basement dry at least?

No waterway anymore, the stream is almost back to normal but 1 meter wider at some places, due to erosion. The house is safe, it was built 300 years ago by people who knew what they were doing: we're 4 meters above the stream and it would require a cataclysmic event for the water to reach the house :).
This flood was not too bad though. The stream crossing the garden went from 1.5 meters wide to a good 20+ meters in half an hour. Damages are limited, apart from 5cm of mud everywhere, flowers washed away indeed and 2 trees down from the water coming down the neighboring fields. Unfortunately, one of them is the only Sambucus racemosa growing around here.

-- not all buttons are placed as thoughtfully for my purpose as on the D500 with grip
-- wonderful clarity in the files, like D4 / Df / D600 but even better ... there must be a HUGE pixel budget to achieve such clarity!

The first batch is all 4.0/300PF @4.0

Later today I will see a children's theatrical performance in really bad mixed light, can hardly get worse.
This will challenge white balance performance. Knowing the d500 I expect wonders

And later even a garden party with barbecue from 8 pm till midnight. This will give me skin tonality in bad light
and high ISO performace.

so that for the first day.

Prophoto is a colour profle with a larger colour gamut, for a webuse one converts into srgb, since most computers have not set their browsers to display this colour space.
I see a shift in colour once converted.

I am amazed there is never any discussion over colour differences when the mode, or gamut, changes.
Very apparent with dense colours.
I'm certainly not versed enough in this matter to explain it but from several threads of Iliah Borg on DPreview I remember him explaining that an important issue is the enumeration of colors. There is no unique way of doing it and each enumeration has an arbitrary part in it. Add metameric failures to that and color changes are inevitable not only by moving to a smaller gamut but also to a larger gamut, because of these different enumerations.

Personally I finally got tired of spending more time on the computer and finally resorted to ad hoc color and wb tweaking in the destination space :)

Post by: Fons Baerken on June 25, 2016, 21:26:34
When do colour-changes manifest?

Colour changes from tiff to jpg, in other words from a prophoto workspace into srgb jpgs for webuse, it is most evident when a tiff is created in photoninja and opened in photoshop to finalize for webuse, the only way to minimize gross colourchanges is to avoid unnecessary processing, where raising contrasts leads to colour changes anyway.
Title: Re: !DAILY UPDATES! June. 366 days: your 2016 in photographs

Yes I understand. If you work in ACR/CC  there is no translation to TIFF, so that will minimize the risk of colour-change.

Thanks, Fons.  I have to confess that my camera was a bit tilted upwards, which should result in the spherical rendition in the sky.  Also, the freshly stitched image before trimming was far from being leveled correctly.   :P  Photomerge did an admirable job anyway.

Temporarily the two incarnations of Nikon's fith generation cameras are in my house. On the left D500+MB-D17, on the right D5.

I very much hope for the third incarnation. Sources say that the D850 / D900 will not happen this year. Pity.

A slow high res camera with superb implementation of silent shutter to use in musical events and theatrical performance and in churches would be more than welcome.

The D600 is a proxy for such a camera since 2013 ... proxies tend to last long ... wonderful IQ, amazing, but compared to the fifth gen cameras simply no WB and no AF.

With the D500 I now got a second proxy that has its own virtues as a sports and wildlife cam.

In post #1 of this group of threads Frank set the new day in NZ as the Threshold... that give you some reserve in Germany.
By the way: your ourdoor pictures have a certain, very admirable touch.
In dealing with the highlights in the sky you accepted the greens to look different that you usually show them - on purpose?
Title: Re: !DAILY UPDATES! June. 366 days: your 2016 in photographs
Post by: the solitaire on June 27, 2016, 05:24:36
Very much on purpose, yes. For pictures containing cornflowers and the like in fields of grains I prefer to develop for contrast and clarity. A matter of personal taste mostly. This has the effect that skies look rather dramatic as well, which fits my personal taste for the sky in the pictures above as well. Sometimes I still decide to revert the skies to a less heavily edited version in photoshop, but in the pictures above I just happened to like the overall appearance.

The pictures of the forest details are far less heavily edited. I just like this far softer nearly SooC approach for pictures of forests and forest details. Again, this is pretty much a matter of personal taste. Sometimes I process all my forest pictures by just setting the correct WB and export them as JPG without any further editing.

Faster time, manual focus. What light levels are we talking here (I go check the EXIF....)

(back again:) OK: set ISO to 1600 at least and time to 1/1000th of a second at least.

This is ISO 100 and 1/125th of a second...

Never be afraid of HiISO as long as it is well behaved. ... This is a D750 ... go for 4000 ISO even if necessary to freeze the movement see the steam and the sweat flying.

Choose "S" mode "S" for sports and "freezing time" as the main issue...

A wonderful song comes to mind

Quote from: Pere Ubu
Pere Ubu – We Have The Technology Lyrics

How I wish we could take this moment and freeze it.
To come back again and again and again -
To hold it to the light.

Now, turn it in our hands and study all the angles.
To find out how and why it's gotta go the way that it
Goes.

We have the technology not available before.
We have the technology.

But thinkers and poets of the past -
Oh, no, they had to leap into the dark so blindly.
Whereas, we'll stand free and upright like men.
The day's golden light.

Linked with our machines our eyes are beaming.

It won't matter at all how weird things are seeming.
We have the technology not available before.
We have the technology.

We need the means to dig deeper.
To search below the surface appearance of things.
Worlds never dreamed of!

What a wonderful life if, darlin, that moment might be
Found wherein we come unstuck completely.
Flap A from Slot B -
Slappin in the wind.

We have the technology not available before.
We have the technology.
