According to the manual, the maximum frame rate of D800 with MB-D12 and AA batteries is 6 fps when in DX mode. Does this require that the custom setting "d12: Battery Order" is set to use the MB-D12 first, or doesn't it matter?

The 6 fps is only gained with the grip and AA batteries (or with D4 battery), so my guess is MB-D12 first.
If you have it the other way round the MB-D12 battery will only used when the normal battery is out.

Yes, it does. Put MD-D12 first.

Thanks Chris, that is also what I would think, but the manual does not say this specifically.

Do you have any experience with lithium AA batteries? They should last much longer and keep their power in cold temperatures. Using an EN-EL18 seems to be a very expensive way to go unless you already have a D4.

No experience on very cold weather, but from knowledge the lithium ones are the best performers in cold temps.
They are expensive, thought.
NiMH perform baddly on cold weather but they are cheap and can be kept warm in a pocket. But again, not very pratical to change them often.
