Aii Frank. Doesn't look fine. Good luck with the repair.
So this set me back 236 Euros. They said I should be more careful, attaching the Ai-S lens to the camera.
I guess I ask in the "Dremel" section what the gurus recommend in this case...

Nonetheless, thanks to NPS I could use the Combo today, 1. March, visiting the church "Sankt Gertrud" built by Gottfried Böhm.
Very interesting architecture, will go back there with tripod and more time.

Your shots:

Great portraits, Frank. The hands of the man in the first shot could be telling a strong story too.
The men at work is great, John. I like the balance between the men and the surroundings and yet the strong presence of both.

Frank - your portrait shots are very unique and wonderful. BW conversion is very pleasing. I would love to hear more on your bw workflow.

Puddle by food carts
-
The most important part of the workflow is the way I talk to the people.
They seem to trust me very much. So they behave openly and friendly.
The second step is choice of equipment. A Nikon cam suits me well and
the 35mm lens of the manual focus kind slows me down and the 1.4 aperture
adds the necessity to concentrate even more.
Then I do develop for tones and details in men or tones and soft skin for women
Photo Ninja is a nice developer.
In Photoshop I try to separate further with Curves Brightnes Contrast and add a
vignette from Siver Efx.
sorry before that I get rid of distractions, like geometric trouble or elements that
do not fit the composition.

Gary, would be curious about your findings on the new toy
Firstly, it has retained the look and feel of the original. It is reminiscent of my Nikon F or Leica M3, solid, highly functional, a well oiled tool. I hope I can explain it ... The complexity of the of the camera is in the inside, but it is very simple to use with minimal menu diving. But if you want to menu dive, the menus are clear and simple and the photog has a lot of options for different setups. For what I shoot and how I shoot ... Everything is right there at my fingertips ... The sophistication of the camera is that it is so elegantly simple ... At one level, the shooting level, it is a camera and doesn't try to be anything else ... And is fully operational at that level. At another level, the menu level, it is a sophisticated photographic computer with all the bells and whistles.
I've only used it once on a walk with the pooch. I armed it with my also newly acquired Fujinon 100-400 and surprisingly, (IIRC), the optical viewfinder worked at 400mm.
The AF is extremely quick. I didn't see any 'significant' differences in AF response between my XT1's and my 1Ds ... But the AF on this XP2 is definitely much quicker than the XT1.
Lastly, for now, the shutter sound is absolutely wonderful, this solid and low ka-click ... Like a recorded SLR but played back at a lower decibel.
Tonight, I will shoot a play. We'll see how it does in the wild.
-
Gary: cannot wait to see your results with it!

Congratulations on the purchase, Gary. Hope it will fit all your needs.
Good portrait, Frank, but it stands more out in B&W. Partly because of the somewhat distracting bokeh in color. The 35/1.4 is very suitable for B&W.

Frank, I also prefer the B&W one. I like the contours of the figures. Also, the open door to the next room is less detracting in B&W.

A spot of fungus John?
Yes, around the edge. Probably on the inside. Must figure out how a 135mm/2.8 Ai is constructed. The backside of the lens is a complete 'disaster' by the way. ;)

Thank you all for helping me decide about the school concert shots.
I feel stage is best done with Manual settings for light and if you
got good AF then AF. My special look though results from using
the 35 Ai-S @f=1.4 so AF is not present and I can only cater to slow
scenes.

Art-work of the Tilburg Cowboys. On their website: ( Tilburg Cowboys (http://www.tilburgcowboys.nl/project/6/niet-thuis-huizen) )
"Not At Home Houses
Ringing doorbells of fleeing houses
"In 2011, during the worst summer in decades, the Not At Home Houses (Niet Thuis Huizen) settled in the Tilburg Piushaven. On rubber boots, the two houses seem able to run away. Each house has ten doorbells with nametags of ten different local residents. By ringing the doorbell, one could hear the resident of the nametag tell why he or she is not at home during summer. The Not at Home Houses also marked the summer terrace of the local residents that stayed home during the holidays."
They are now located in The Spoorzone, the former railway-repair-facilities.

That 35/1.4 is very well suited for bw portraits, Frank. Nice one's.
March 6th Lots of cold rain, even snow expected.
Positively surprised with the Nikkor C 135/2.8 Q auto, a lens which can be purchased for nearly nothing.... Beautiful colours and wide open full of contrast and crisp images. And a very smooth and pleasant bokeh. Unbelievable sharp stopped down.
On the Df with the 4T (@ f/5.6) a detail of the mini ficus.
-
The 2.8/135 series is very good. The result you show here is amazing. Looks like it has been stacked.
-
Thanks Frank.
I have the 135/2.8 E-series but I am and not so enthusiast about that lens. Rather normal.
Apparently the Q-version (around 1973) was a different class, and design. And expensive in that time too I believe. The only disadvantage is the Non-Ai, so I can only use it on the Df.
Another example, now without close-up attachment lens and wide open.

crazy that the lens is still built and sold till today.
mine is 2006 vintage.
what troubles me with her is that she sometimes irritates the light metering system very much
AND
that the results are great if I nail the focus but that it is very difficult to do so
last thing has more to do with the camera that does not allow green dot focussing outside a very resricted zone
of AF points. That is why I want to try the D500 with the 1.4/24mm as a 35mm solution too. She has focus points all
over the place and the 1.4/24 has some very interesting intentionally non corrected faults at 1.4.

A better focus-screen can help or the screen enlarger DK-17M. I had one on the D700 in combination with the 35/1.4. On the Df focus is relatively easy.
The green dot can work if you first take the centre of the lens, at the right distance, focus-till the green dot appears, and then reframe to the desired composition. This method I used when it was pretty dark.

I feel that reframing after green dotting offs the focus easily at 1.4

Frank, did you max out the ram, will you use 2 graphic cards?
Always have build my machines myself, also.
I understand that very much. Have been working for c't magazine before testing motherboards and Optical drives...
These are two Xeons, 8 core & 16 threads each.
I did not max out the RAM, because 64 Gigabyte seems enough for my purposes and 256 Gigabyte (what the board can take) seem a bit of a stretch, moneywise and purposewise. As I got 2 x 4 memory channels it makes sense to use 8 x 8 GB (ECC registered for max stability and compatability)
Generally I optimize the systems for stability, noise and longevity. That is why I chose water cooling all in one. I am not sure I need a lot of computing power from the GPUs, but if my software will utilise such in the future, I have an upgrade path there.
I am excited. My last system stems from January 2009 and is still in perfect shape. I will now pass it on to my son.
Next stop: replace noisy Enermax original Power Fan with silent Noctua replacement Power fan.
For the new system there is a BeQuiet Black Power 650W (140 Euro plus Taxes) very good electrical and nosewise.

Gary, thanks for the identification. I always see this species in my neighbors and have wondered its name. The newly grown leaves are red which gradually turns to green. Very peculiar.

"A passion in wood"
I am very pleased with the results I get from the little X100T developed in Photo Ninja, even the ISO3200 shots are very clear and detailed with wonderful colors despite the bad light I had there. The little one keeps impressing me PLUS: there is no excuse to not carry her. This morning I weighed the D600 with 1.4/24G in my hands (wonderful results!) and I did not want to carry this stone strapped around my neck, sure not.

Second thought: the background scene is so nicely bukolic like take from a Dutch painting. Could It be a nice (although bold) edit to cut off the back of the horse to get rid of the plastic items?
A very harmonious square cut could be a good idea.

I would straighten out the geometry in #1 & #2 if it was my pic. Tonality seems just right to my eyes. Which brings me to #3, which is really dramatically cut and would be a perfect addition to "the organ thread"... thank you for taking part in our picture a day effort. I feel it is a great exercise & form of diary ...

Indeed. I'm rediscovering it, now on the D750 I like it even more. I only had a bit of a cognitive dissonance with the first pictures as it is so much slower than a modern lens I sometimes feel I would be faster in manual (no, I'm not :) ).

Lars, these looks great, especially the images with the vine (?), the twisted trunk and the trunk with the incused patterns of leaves.
Could you identify the wood in the first image? Would they be beech trees?
Thanks Akira! - in English I think they are called Honeysuckles, those that twines around the trees - latin hints: Lonicera, Caprifoliaceae. I'm pretty sure it's a larva/beetle that creates those leaf patterns in the wood - very nice work :)
Yes, it is Beech in the first image.

For me the cars in my street are always a distraction. Today I climed a wall and held the Fuji X100T way above my head as far as my arms could reach to minimize the impact of the unloved structures and to better the Geometry of the houses. To further emilinate distractions I converted this to 1 Bit in several steps. Now the bones of trees and houses dominate the picture as it should be.

Peter. Your shot. Nowhere to go:
"You Never Give Me Your Money"
You never give me your money
You only give me your funny paper
And in the middle of negotiations
You break down
I never give you my number
I only give you my situation
And in the middle of investigation
I break down
Out of college, money spent
See no future, pay no rent
All the money's gone, nowhere to go
Any jobber got the sack
Monday morning, turning back
Yellow lorry slow, nowhere to go
But oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go
Oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go
Nowhere to go
Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh...
Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh...
Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh...

Pick up the bags and get in the limousine
Soon we'll be away from here
Step on the gas and wipe that tear away
One sweet dream came true today
