In a few days Carnaval is prominent in Tilburg, and during 4 days from 6 till 9 February the name will be 'Kruikenstad'.
A number of shops sell clothing and other articles for that event. The Tilburg- Carnaval colours are Orange and Green. A nice example below...

Quick lunch time testing of the G. Rodenstock Trinar 13.5 cm F4 I got from the flea market. It is reaching 1/1 at max extension of the PB-6. Both pictures at F9.

Hi Seapi, it is indeed fitted with a shutter but a rather basic one. For the first test, I just put it open and used the focal plane as I mostly wanted to check if the lens was useable. Next time, I'll make a comparison.

Bruno, the Rodenstock looks as though it is fitted with a shutter, if it is, would you use the leaf shutter or the focal plane shutter from preference?
I shoot a lot with Large Format lenses and the D600 as my back (and D3 before) and prefer the in camera shutter for flexibility. See. You have to fully open the camera shutter to be able to use the leaf shutter. The whole contraption has to be extremly light proof therefore. You will probably see the vibration of the shutter in the final frame, also the cable release has to go somewhere. Afterwards you have to remember to close the camera shutter before your next exposure.
With in camera shutter you can use life view & Tethering & Mirror Up & IR-Release & Bracketing ... Much better Routine!

Chip. What is wrong with the water? Why does the green not extend to the shore?
Frank, this is an artificial reservoir in Northern CA. Water levels are significantly down due to drought, so lots of exposed areas that are normally under water. It is a pity about the water shortage, but the end result is interesting to look at. The exposed banks have an orange-red color that is very striking!

This is pars pro toto for a series I took at a children's carnival today 4/Feb/2016
I was very unhappy with my performance and with the Cameras performace too. Currently she tends to signal focus acquisition and the face is still dead unsharp. I did lose some series today.
Sometimes it helps to put her into Focus "M" and then switch back to Autofocus "S"-Mode and she works as normal again.
I cannot say the X100T has made it into the "reliable workhorse" park of my equipment after one year of heavy use.
EDIT: Added three pictures to this thread.

Thanks Thomas and John for your comments. Yes, sled dog racing is sport no. 1 in Alaska with respect to publicity. The Iditarod race is the longest one, but the Yukon Quest has an even higher star here in Fairbanks, as it runs in the interior and is a tougher race with respect to environmental conditions and less support along the trail.

that lens the 80/2.8 how does that fit on df, thought it fitted the f3af only,

The Autofocus of the 80/2.8 will only work on the F3AF (and apparantly also on some other Filmbodies).
But the lens will work on any other Nikon-body that accepts AI lenses as a manual lens. It has the same focus behaviour as the 105/1.8 but in this case 'damped' by the non-functioning AF.
The lens is perfect, colourful, contrast, and sharp at f2.8 and unbelievable sharp stepped down. It is at least in the class of the Voigtlander 90 in my opinion. The only little drawback (and that is a personal note) is the focus at 1 meter only, in which case the use of the close-up attachment lenses is an outcome.
-
If I remember correctly, Af lenses for F3AF drain the battery power when mounted on the modern AF camera or DSLR. Didn't you experience that?
-
Nope, no battery-loss at all, not on the D200, D700, Df and D800E. But the AF-selection-button is switched to M of course.
-
Okay, you all know how I love California and our weather... Well, here's another, all-in-fun, poke at you cold weather peoples. We are experiencing a heat wave here ... another 85F day. I just picked a salad from the backyard and I'm firing up the BBQ for the rest of dinner. Kale, lettuce, tomatoes, celery, parsley, a pepper and a lemon for some zest, topped with some Mandarin Orange slices. (Yes, I cook with wine, that's an Oak Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.)

Festival day. Saraswati Puja (Hindu goddess for wisdom, knowledge, music; Greek equivalent Athena, Roman equivalent Minerva) at neighbour's place.
This occasion is widely celebrated in every single school in Bengal and few other Northern parts of India. Prayers followed by traditional meal: Khichdi, a dish from cabbage, Papad, Tomato "chutney", sweet dish.

My wine country photos are from Temecula, not as old, bountiful or uniformly as delish as Napa or Sonoma. But it also only an hour+ drive away from home. If you search enough you'll discover a jewel here and a jewel there. The discovery part is half the fun.
@ Tommy- I don't think that anything in India would truly surprise me ... But I've never seen such a well stocked wine fridge in my travels to Asia. But the times, they are a changing.

Nice atmosphere, Thomas.
Morning and evening-light offer no doubt extra challenges and possibilities. It all depends on the subject (and a timing) which light you want ;)
But on many occasions the circumstances play a rol, time-lack on a travel, or a meeting with a specific time to photograph. Or the location of the subject. For instance, The Kerria japonica in my garden can catch some sun but only in the early morning. This time of year that's only fifteen minutes sun.
This morning there was a bright sun, and despite the cold the Kerria starts to flower enthusiastic.

These images are taken in Portmeirion village in North Wales, we live a 2 hour drive from here so we are able to take advantage of some of the off season pricing deals. Portmeirion is Clough Williams-Ellis imaginative Italian style village that was used in numerous TV shows when they wanted to pretend to be in Italy, it is most well known as the location for all the exterior shots of the Prisoner TV drama starring Patrick McGoohan. Within the hills opposite is an early hydro electric generating plant, the power lines are one of the downsides.

This is a pork shoulder after 12 hours in a smoker and another eight hours in a crock pot. The black stuff is called bark, it is crispy and full of seasonings. Beneath the bark, falling off the bone, is this tender, flavorful pork full of subtle yet intoxicatingly smokey flavoring. We paired it with Caverio, a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre grapes. I don't think anyone can be completely happy with a daily photo of high quality. Some images need more time, to develop in the head, for selecting which one is the best. Apart from any post-procession possibilities.

Thanks Frank.
This is typical an example were you need more time to consider options of post processing. Shot in high ISO, dark, scarcely lit, cropped. I refrain the usage of flash in the fieldwork. The world-outside is not a studio, and it gives me a feeling of an unnatural effect (although very controlled diffuse flash can be useful)
And as I only needed web-quality of very small size, an opportunity to use different lenses I normally would have done. In this case the 50G/1.8 I have three 1.8G lenses (28-50-85) and in evening and night situations they behave, how shall I put it, uncontrolled. Sometimes very lousy, sometimes acceptable, sometimes good, usually when going on the 'all manual' options. Perhaps an autofocus-issue...
Back to the lady. She has a natural browny skin, which I tried to emphasize. Getting the correct white-balance is the first issue. My Df has, especially at daylight, an considerable green overtone, which needs correction (around -25 or 30 in the tint of the white balance). It's much less in evening-and night situations. With portraying people I try to avoid any sharpening even with resizing.
I must have a closer look at the file later this week.
-
John: Which RAW converter do you use?
PS: Does the following picture look like an "unnatural" flash use? Flash here is only for getting rid of the ugly downlight situation, so 80% ambient + 20% flash on a D70 with 1.8/50D IRRC .... 1250 ISO 1/125 s f=4 manual flash dose 1/32 or 1/64 of SB800
-
CC and DxO. I switch between them. DxO is very good in correcting High ISO, but weaker in colours. It has a very fast workflow for output of more or less 'standard' photo's. CC has more fine-tuning options.

Oh yes, I agree a limited use of flash can be very effective. But it means time for setup. What I prefer, when possible, is directing the people to natural light-sources and get the shot I want.

-
Like the daffodils - test with the 85K and 4T (handheld and f/4)
Can you elaborate on the 4T and 6T how they work in your experience?
-
How it works is pretty good described here: Close Up Lens vs Macro Extension Tubes (http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/macro-extension-tubes-closeup.htm#calculator-closeup)
In the field I usually don't switch lenses, but getting closer with a close up lens is very convenient.
Loss of light is minimized and all camera-controls work. For lenses you are dependent on the filter-size but step down-and up rings are a perfect tool to get them on every lens. It takes however some fine-tuning and testing which combination works best.
For the available Nikon Close-up Attachments see: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/macro/index3a.htm (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/macro/index3a.htm)
-
John: I have some close up lenses (one 77mm Canon, some Hoya for other lenses) but they distorted the images so much that I gave up using them. Good to know it is worth to experiment more
-
Yes, there is a lot of bad-quality stuff on the market. This is important: "Numbers 3T, 4T, 5T and 6T are two-element achromatic lenses that still maintain a high image quality. 3T and 4T work best with lenses from 85mm to 200mm, and 5T and 6T with lenses from 70mm to 210mm." I also use them for wide-angle lenses by the way were the effect may be less, but still is there, especially when looking for the best background.
Disadvantage is that the usage of close-up filters are not in the EXIF, unless you store it in the 'comments field' or author.

Free bicycle park - Central Station
D800E - 20/3.5
-
thats an inspiring subject John 8)
-
Yes Fons ;) Tilburg is loaded with bikes, and parking problems of all kinds are part of the daily news.
But also a nice test how the 20/3.5 performs on the D800E. Not the best combination to my idea.
-
20/3,5 makes me think of the voigtländer which similar specs but i suspect it performs a little better, although the corners remain weak even stopped down, better invest in a 20/1.8 if you want to upgrade on that focal length.
-
today I looked out of my windows

Frank i see b/w material 8)

Fons, I see b/w filters ;-)

Wides are always difficult. Mostly I use the 17-35/2.8, but that has serious drawbacks regarding architecture.
Nice Bird, Bruno. Didn't notice to much noise on my screen...

Yes, the 35/1.3 AIS is a lovely lens with special bokeh, and I think it is comparable with the Voigtlander 58/1.4
-
Fons. Your grandchild does not look so happy. Those blue eyes. Smashing.
-
She fell chin down, bleeding very much, straight to the doctor, so nowadays they glue such cuts.

I know. Good glue. My son once trew a big metal toy down from a bed, meeting his friend back of the head.
A fountain of blood. Wow. The hospital people put some glue there and gone was tze wound. Great technique.
-
A really dramatic portrait, Fons. Hope she is well soon.
And a great portrait, Frank.

You all have a day with people today with very good portraits. I'm glad Puck is already going well.
I only had time for the frozen daffodils after a very cold night. D750 AFS 105/2.8, severely cropped and aggressively edited. I like the colors that remain when brightness is pushed totally down.

Brone: Very interesting crystal structure.
Jaques: Wonderful backlit workshop with lots of retro elements.
John. Yes! What cold it was. All the roofs were frozen all car windows, but it got really nice during the day.
Fons: Half male, half female? What is this sculpture? Is there a title, an explanation?
-
Thanks Frank. Nice portrait again.
Busy at the exposition, Fons?
Great overview, Jacques, he uses old equipment?
Interesting Structure, Bruno. What is it?
The sun did shine a bit, but we had rain and snow and hail as well.
And frozen Daffodils...
-
The exposition is most certainly recommended to see the paintings "in the flesh" is fascinating yet is very crowded people treading along with headphones stalling ifo the paintings, will have to deal with it.
The sculpture in the courtyard will have to look that up, my initial thought looking at it "Worldtraveller"?
I will be gone today a grandson is born.
Cheers

All good with grandson?
-
Today I needed to test some equipment because my D600 does not expose according to measurement. Now I am quite sure the aperture lever of the cam is broken.
That is why I had some very unsharp shots at f=5.6 and f= 8.0 ... the aperture did not close ... I had to dial in a time 4 stops "too low" ... and got DOF 4 stops too low. ... great excuse to buy a D5 !!!
A possible culprit is a metal pice on the 1.4/35 AiS that seems to be bended in the wrong direction. But I have no clue. I will visit NPS on monday
-
Aii Frank. Doesn't look fine. Good luck with the repair.

Yes, the whole area will be rebuilt. Unfortunately those pruned Limes (Linde) will be removed due to a new big sewer-system.

This belongs to last Thursday the 25th feb 2016, the Pearle building on the corner has collapsed last night it was being renovated.
The building next to it "De Kleine Winst" has been the former workshop of the painter Jheronimus Bosch, statue.
I took this shot last Thursday after going to the J. Bosch exposition.

John - that's sad with those Linden trees! It will certainly change the city. I'm very fortunate to have old and tall Linden trees just outside my door. If those were to be cut down I think I would consider moving.
Frank - that statue seems to stare at you like he just asked you a question and awaits the answer.. I prefer the BW.

Scary story Fons - hope noone was hurt. Those are very old houses if Bosch had his workshop there. Paintings of Bosch are fascinating .. and his depictions of hell can make you slightly uneasy.

Yes it's sad. Too many trees have suffered from the building-and re-building mob and corrupted the city civil servants with their 'financial' influence. The only cure is planting more trees ;)
