I couldn't find a pet post, so I decided to start this one. Let me know if I should have started/posted this elsewhere.
Here's a snap shot of my cat Dexter that I took last week. Got pets? :)

At first glance I thought the thread was named "Got pests". Nice dog Andy. By the look of it, it might be able to pull a prank or two ;) The cats are as usual relexed. I wonder how many hours of their life the spend relaxing :)
-
Saddam Hussein. Lived up to the name.
Sadly her water and lights were turned off 2 years ago due to feline aids
-
Elsa, great photo and I love his attitude :)

I have "always" had cats, here is a selection of the more recent ones. The brown one is our first pedigree cat, all the others have been more or less traumatized cats given to us by the local animal protection organisation, and we have tried to give them confidence and a good home.
-
Gorgeous images in this thread - how we love our pets...
Thanks Bjørn. Your images are seriously nice too
-
Taken early January when he arrived. 10 weeks old
-
Andy - the doglett is beautiful. I assume you dont have black or red soil at your place ;D

I dont know how and why, but the same cat down to the minute detail of how it places her feet when lying down, is now residing in our bathroom. It showed up on our porch two years ago and demanded to stay here. Spooky!
-
- Impressive Russian Blue cat (I believe) Elsa.
- Nice Abysinian (I guess) Bjørn J.
Here is our King of Snow Alfi (Red Tabby pure bred Siamese cat). Unfortunately he is now gone, due to kidney failure.
-
BW - if it sits behind doors - waiting for you - attacks your feet and bite - it's Saddam Hussein re-incarnate.
-
10 years ago - people freaked when we posted pics of our pets. Now it is such a special thing.
yep - Russian Blue she was.
-
Bjørn - your B&C cat duplicated to mine also - called Moses (loves living in a basket)
-
I started getting "expert" (selfproclaimed) on the various breeds of cats after I began visiting cat shows, photographing the participating cats for the breeders :)
After Alfi passed away, Shessie (a seal tabby pointed pure Siamese) is the only cat left here. Accordingly she is getting very spoiled.
-
Tersn - she looks quite royal - must have an interesting personality
-
So many cats!
10 years ago - people freaked when we posted pics of our pets. Now it is such a special thing.
Yeah, it was soooo not cool to do that... ridiculous.
Here's our cross eyed cat, Ziggy, our friends found him in a bush when he was 5-6 weeks old.
-
Tersn - she looks quite royal - must have an interesting personality
Yes, she used to be very dominating when she enjoyed company of several other cats here. Already as a 5 months old kitten she forced our large male cat away from the food tray!
-
BW - if it sits behind doors - waiting for you - attacks your feet and bite - it's Saddam Hussein re-incarnate.
The only thing she is attacking is the food. With great passion....
-
Super ones.
Well every cat has a story. The oldest one of my three cats was in a animal-asylum and I wanted to take care of them. When she saw me, she ran towards me, but was so shy later on, we had to grab her. She came into the home, started to snore very very loudly (for such a small white cat). She can't really miauw, but snoring very good. And she winks....
-
A lot of nice and proud cats passing by.

Let me bring some balance in to this thread ;)
-
Success Børge, nice scene with those 8 puppies !
-
What a bunch of fantastic pets! I truly am enjoying all of the photo's!
-
Bjørn J, that shot of the cat flipping the mouse is cool!
. . . I'm not here . . . :-X Any other reptile/amphibian owners?
Nikkor 105mm f/1.8 A--s @ f/2.8
-
Maybe I am biased, but is'nt there a rule that states, "pets should be soft and fluffy" ;) Does that thing live in your computer?
-
Tristin, is that the material for your new guitar strap? :o
-
Børge, she has a cage but sometimes when I take her out I let her relax in the room for a bit. Which for her means hiding, she is still young and shy.
Akira, hopefull not for another 20-30 years. :D

My other (real) - Ruby Tuesday

Nice dog portraits Elsa !
The doglett is the same breed (German Spitz) as the dog of my parents, but different in size (your's seems "miniature" vs the medium version of my parents).

Arend - mine is a Pomeranian (Toy Pom) but you are right - they look kind of identical!
and your's looks much truer to the right colour. Beautiful dog!
-
Elsa the Boxer's face is super.

Monte is my first child, and I used to take a lot more photos of him before the human kids arrived.

Tersn - I am unable to see your image - anyone else having the same issue?
-
Yes, same here. Cannot download the file either due to a program error. Probably a corrupted file.
-
No problem here viewing and downloading on both a MBP and an iPad;
Beautiful capture of a beautiful animal.
-
It's a *.jp2 file.
Hermann
-
Irfanview detects that it is a .jp2 file and invites you to rename it to a .jpg, at which point one is greeted with a splendid image of this long legged cat bounding through the grass. Well worth the effort - as already noted, a splendid image Tersn.
In the meantime, Tersn's modified file is here:

Thank you Hugh! I discovered that it was called jp2 myself (I was first trying the 2000 jpg - format which apparently did not work well) and renamed it jpg, but there may still have been some problems.

Thanks Elsa H.
-
That's a real tiger Terje. Beautiful in action.
Mine is a bit normal ;)
-
The gist of the Cat story is: NEVER rename the file extension of a file attachment. This causes all sorts of collateral damage later on.
When such a renaming is conducted, there will be a mismatch between MIME type and the actual file type, so as to confuse browser and viewing software. Not all programs are clever enough to look for file signatures inside the file itself to detects its true type, and problems arise.
When the .jp2 extension is kept, the file is perceived - correctly - as a 'Jpeg2000' type and displayed properly. However, using Jpeg2000 is not recommended as this type never took off and thus did not evolve into a new standard as its creators had hoped for.
-
That's a real tiger Terje. Beautiful in action.
Mine is a bit normal ;)
Thanks, John. Tiger, or perhaps lion (her real name is Shesmetet after the lion goddess of the Pharaos Egypt : )
"Normal" cats are often less problematic regarding illness etc.
-
Three of these creatures are not strictly speaking “pets” but they have become so familiar to us they seem to be as much at home as our dog.
A few Field Mice, make their winter home in the walls of our house, or in our cars (this year they made their way into the ventilation systems costing costing us a tidy sum for our mechanic to extract the nests they left behind). This one I found in our closed garage today feeding inside the bird seed container, which I stupidly left ajar. I captured it and tossed it into some bushes but it somehow grabbed the lower limb of a nearby tree instead where it fearfully clung to this unaccustomed perch before it fell safely to earth.
The squirrel is seen here denuding our magnolia of buds that otherwise would have been lovely pink and white blossoms. F#!@ing tree rats!
The chipmunk comes out from its nest under our front porch and vacuums up what birdseed falls to the flagstones below robbing our birds of a meal. It brazenly perches on the head of this concrete swan three feet from where I have my evening cocktails, paying no attention to the wild protestations of our dog who can’t get anywhere near him from inside the house.
And finally our only true pet, Reggie, with a look on his face that is pretty much what he looks like when he sees the chipmunk (or squirrel or turkey or white-tailed deer or possum et cetera, et cetera).

Visiting my sister over the easter days I enjoyed the last one a lot. Thanks for posting!
-
My boys
Nice, those two seem really close.
-
Chip, the hug in front of the mountain is priceless.
-
Thanks Thomas, JA, and Jakov. It is fun to watch their relationship develop over time :)
-
Tom's squirrel is extra special too. Especially the first two shots :)

Easter sunday, soon he will be 5 months old.

Hi Andy, the last one gives such an impression of strength ...
-
Andy, the second image is spot on. The timing is perfect!
-
My white "shadow". D700 50mm f/1.2
-
Two more of Knut's white shadow. It's a lovely dog.
-
Bjorn, Knut
lovely pictures of (Simba?). He seems to have the appropriate fur for the conditions ...
Bruno,
yes sometimes with the proper light it shows really nicely. I was just playing with the D5 while walking the dog. Such "bursts" are so well supported by technology these days... On the other side: He is still a puppy, sometimes within a few minutes, a very wet puppy :-)
Jakov,
yep, the D5 made "timing" easier. Here is another example :-)
-
Thanks Andy, but the dog's name is Simba, he follows his owner Knut S everywhere, hence the "white shadow" :)
What kind of dog is it we see in your photos?
-

Bjorn,
I realized my error in the meanwhile - sorry (changed my post already).
The breed of my little dog is "White Swiss Shephard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shepherd)" (Berger Blanc Suisse).
rgds,
Andy
Below a picture when he was 3 weeks old.
-
Pets are such a wonderful enrichment of a family life.
Unfortunately, their life expectancy is shorter than that of humans.
I guess, many of us had to endure the feeling of sorry, the challenge to say "Good bye", the mourning and the fond memories of their participation in our life.
About a year ago, we had this challenging phase (again), when our dog was about to leave us forever.
The whole family was sitting on the floor around his favorite place while he passed peacefully away.
Rest in peace Amor
-
Andy, the first one is especially touching. Maybe because I know that feeling.
-
Having lost a few life long companions my self, I really connect to your pictures Andy.
-
This is a terrific thread. I am really impressed by some of the action shots.
Here is a snapshot of Mocha, unfiltered. The photo was made with my new full spectrum converted Sony A7R. A mix of visible and infrared wavelengths (from the room lamp) was recorded. The IR causes a slight softening of detail.
Kitty Mocha must have moved slightly on the day her nose stripe was applied. You can see the result is slightly off center. And there is only white under her right eye and on the right side of her mouth. She has an endearing "kooky kitty" look sometimes with the little half-smile and decentered nose stripe. We think Mocha has very long whiskers.
-
A quick snapshot with the iPhone of Beer cleaning up the leftovers of a burglar ;) ;)
Beer is getting beefier each day, from eating a ton of proper food but also from the freedom of movement on the property.
Removed his belt so his protective "mane" has a chance to grow and thicken properly, he starts to look like a male lion now ;D

Very true. Last sunday we lost Mikkel. He was hit by a car, luckily he died momentary. And I am glad we found him. He was only 4 and a half years, a very happy and joyful cat. Heart breaking it is.
I post his photo again.

What a sad news, Bjørn. Wish you all the strenght. Five years ago I lost one of my cats due to a car-accident, it's a very hard way of saying goodbye.
-
It appears that several of us lost a cat that way. Here is our very clever Ice Blue Isak, a blue point Siamese cat that lived a strong and free life as a stud. He was the father of some 20 litters. Finally he died in what looked like a car accident. Unfortunately i have few (if any) good pics of him, as he hated cameras and turned quickly away. Isak also inspired some "poems" :) :
SIAMESE PRINCESS
(or Isak´s spring theme)
I want a hairy little Siamese princess
With a couple of sisters who can raise a few blisters
A fragile little Siamese Princess
With feet playing drums, who talks when she comes
I don´t want no bore
She must master a kitten or four
I want a darling little Siamese Princess
With long phony nails and a hairdo that rinses
A vicious little Siamese Princess
With her mouth full of mice, who hisses ´n´ lies
Don´t want no smudge
She must have earned a cert from a judge
I want a funky little Siamese Princess
An angel; a devil; with mind like a rebel
With titanic head who would sleep in my bed
She can even be poor
As long as she knows how to open a door
All up inside
I just want a princess of pride
I want a classy little Siamese Princess
With charming blue eyes wearing elegant thighs
A brazen little Siamese Princess
With two over-sized ears who can rut without fears
I don´t want a snail
She must carry a whip of a tail
For ten years or three nights
Won´t someone send me a princess who bites?
.
.
Yes, won´t someone send me a princess who bites?
(After Frank Zappa´s Jewish Princess. A special thank
to Connie who learned us about the princess)

Beer jumped the electric fence last night, apparently he learned his lesson as he was patiently waiting on the wrong side of the fence for me to take the power off and open the gate.
Before doing so I just had to take an image of the rascal being too cute in a yellow field of flowers ;D ;D

A recent addition to my mobile household. Scruffy was found trying to survive in the parking lot of a motor home repair station. Workers would toss her the occasional leftover sandwich bits.
The resident cat is less than thrilled with the new tenant >:(.

Bjørn, so sad to hear of your loss of Mikkel. Likewise others who have lost their animals. I still miss my cat who died of kidney failure, aged 15years. They become part of you it seems.

Here, some pictures between the ISO 1200-3600 range; just what you need to take in house pictures without artificial light and with sufficient DOF and speed to fix our English Bulldog who is faster than you think; in any case moving enough to give a photographer a tough time ;)

Bill, your waif has a very appealing face, cute super
-
Thanks Mike. It was hard to resist her. Once I showed her a little attention and food she followed me all over.
I'm not sure if it happens so much in other civilized countries, but here in the US there are 1000's (or more) abandoned pets each year. I have never gone looking for a pet, they just seem to wander up and stay.
-
Bill, I think abandoned pets are sadly a problem in most western countries. And yep they do get to ya don't they!
-
Nice examges of an English Bulldog. This one looks particularly happy.
Thanks, and yes he is very happy. On top he has a lot of sense of humor.

I am with Akira - beautiful images and snake - she is gorgeous. Isn't Jasper a boy's name?

Thanks, she is a lovely animal to interact with. As for her name, she doesn't mind. ;)

Beautiful colours and details of the skin. I think it's difficult to have a complete overview. ;)

In memory of my faithful friend Magnum, who passed just over a year ago. We adopted him just before our daughter was born, he was about 70 lbs then and was about 140 lbs (63.5 kg) at his max. These pictures track along my photography evolution - a borrowed D70, then my first D70s (2 shots), then D300, and finally Df!
Thanks to all for sharing!

The shadow that has lent itself to Jasper make a exceptional image, presenting Jasper with much allure.
Interestingly this seems to be the Human interpretation of a Snakes powers for milenia.
-
Jasper is also a mineral, and I think that fits with the snake which looks a lot like a Boa constrictor.
Beautiful specimen either way, and very well captured! I should take some decent pictures of our two Boas some day
-
Jasper the Boa Constrictor has got my attention,
I have a past that has had me as a Snake Owner
I was lucky to know very knowledgeable breeders
with Skills in Morphs.
I don,t recall morphs common in Boa Constrictors,
this has prompted me to have a browse to see the
Variants.
Is Jasper a Super Hypo Morph ?

If it was a mouse he ate then he is young I assume? Do you have other species apart from common boa?

Good age for a dog, I reckon he's earned a nap or three ;D

He is 10 months old and isn't a common Boa, but a Suriname locality Boa Constrictor Constrictor. A true red tail boa. Common Boas are Boa Imperators which hail from Mexico and Central America rather than South America.
I have some "morphs" of Boa Imperators, but no regular common Boas. A hypomelanistic azabache, an azabache jungle, a groovy coral albino and a hypomelanistic.
Thanks for the compliment. I'm amazed I managed a sharp shot with it at 1/60! Typically I need 1/200 to get sharp with the 105+5T.

Thanks for the explanation - very interesting variants I didn't know of. It's a beautiful snake species. Many years ago I had reptiles - including a Boa Constrictor. It was most likely an Imperator.

Awesome dog shots
You are years ahead of me regarding manual focus
Thank you Armando.
I am not sure when you started focusing manually. I started photography with a Nikon FM almost 25 years ago and always prefered manual focus over AF. With AF I never got the consistency I had with MF so I never indulged in it too much. It's a matter of practice however, even if a good eye helps.
Now as for the good eye, I (unintentionally) got a piece of metal in my eye 2 days ago. I hope it fully heals, otherwise I will have to learn focusing using my left eye. From the few attempts I gave it, that would be almost as tough as starting from the beginning all over again.

I used to shoot with my right eye, but now my left seems to be better so I switched. After a while you will hardly notice. I did add a magnifier (DK17M) which helps with hard to focus lenses like wide angles. I still don’t trust autofocus and very rarely use it unless I’m handing my camera to someone to take a photo for me. I suppose I should give it a chance one of these days.
-
In a near completely dark room, using flash to at least get some light on the subject (remote trigger and holding the flash with my left hand, slung under the lens to support the camera) I made this photo. (The lights in the enclosure went out about 2 hours before I could make this photo, and the only light source was a light in the kitchen. Turning on the light in the living room would have spooked the spider)
I used an AF lens, but focused manually because there was no light for the AF to work with.
I'm happy to announce that after 2 accidents, both involving my right eye, and both within a 2 week period, vision to my right eye is 100% again.

Such great images of forum pets, I'm kind of jealous especially at the dogs.
