A third topic dedicated to light, in this case the idea is that the main subject or object is brighter than the background. So in essence the opposite of the backlit topic ;D
In the title I'm referring to center-weighted exposures but it doesn't matter which exposure method you've used. In my case I switch between spot, center-weighted, matrix and manual exposure modes to bag the images I envision at the time depending on light conditions and how the used camera responds to the specific situation.
Most of my images are of animals captured in the zoo, sometimes while walking past an enclosure (the lucky shots) but for some of them I was waiting for a long time for an animal to walk into one of the sunspots with shady backgrounds I had the lens pointed at (while trying to ignore the dozens of people commenting on my big camera ;) ).
Please show us your "center-weighted" images, if you are unsure if it's applicable to post it do it anyway :)

This is very common situation on stage. A hope this counts.
-
Toddler mafia. Hope I am at least close to being on-topic :)
-
This should be interesting since , if to be believed, most used metering is Center :) . I like to play with spot metering on my ever present white birds using -EV as in -2 or more. Gets rid of not so nice backgrounds ;D .
Good start with the images :)

Hi Paco, thank you for being the first to respond wit a very fitting image.
I've seen you perform and the way the dancers worked with the light on stage made me regret not bringing a camera along, would have been a nice break from my zoo life images ;D

He either just buried somebody or is planning to do so hahaha. He reminds a lot of the English hooligans, same look and same attitude.
And yes the light is awesome so very much on topic :)

One more stage center weighted. It can be seeing as nudity and I don´t know the rules for that. Please, move or delete -or comment- as needed.

No need, there are no nudity limitations that I am aware of on NG other than that the content needs to be legal.
On a personal note; stunning image, thanks for sharing and keeping the topic alive :)
-
Paco, I don't see nudity, I see flexibility and a marvelous image!
-
Thanks you guys. I don´t see anything wrong with it but there are a lot of people here and it doesn't hurts to ask.
She is not only crazy flexible but the way she moves gets her to the extreme. Very, very good and emotional dancer. The show is called "Petit Comite" and the lighting was experimental. This section was lighted with only to tungsten little canons in either corner of the stage, creating depth and strong contrast with total darkness.
-
Very nice thread. Congratulations to all !
-
A lot of the photography I do is done thorugh center weighted metering. It's just the mode of metering I am most familiar with. My Nikon FM and FM2 only gave me center weighted and they were all I used for my first 15 years in photography (ok, and a Minolta IVf for studio, mediuma nd large format work)
Most of the photos below show backgrounds well beyond the DR of my D3. Most likely beyond the DR of film as well

Let me make my contribution. It is a theme I like very much.

Light spot on stage. The new lens is not working well -70-200mm vrII- The seller has disappear and it is now being looked at to estimate the repair cost. More than probably de-centered and un calibrated af.
I still have some images to show
-
From a light spot in a church.
-
Cool! Great additions here. Thread was obviously saved by the the safety net.
-
I found the center-wighted part to be the leitmotif of this image

A classic portrait on stage (rehearsal) Tough exposition and light conditions handle with easy by the Z6 and 70-200e. 2.8 at 2.8, iso 3200, 1/400th.
Standard picture control with slight opening of shadows.
-
Another tough work for the camera. Live shows are hard but rewarding. Black dress, black shall and very low light on stage. Z6 at work again.
Late year student with coreography by Eva la Yerbabuena.
-
Great stuff, yeah Paco.
-
Thank you Fons, happy you like it.
-
Paco, your creativity is enormous, and the Z6 makes you even better.
Impressed about the AF, on Z6, the scene is black on black and the focus is spot on. That was the technical stuff, but framing and timing is you Paco :)
-
Thank you Bent.
The Z6 at work again. One fix lens, 28mm 1.4e and stuck in backstage. As Akira says, limitation is inspiration.
-
Very nice Paco !
-
Thank you Bent.

You are truly inspired, Paco! The use of the lens' perspective is perfect!
-
Thank you guys for the appreciation.
Akira, I took your advise at heart ;)

Akira, I took your advise at heart ;)
To tell the truth, I've never really liked or been inspired by the lenses in the 28-35 (equivalent) range according to my preference. But your image above may have changed my prejudice.
-
Paco, these are great , and so different :) .
-
Thank you guys.
Akira, thanks for such a compliment. I personally don´t favor that focal length myself but everytime I grab this specific lens is very special.
One more -since I have the thread for myself for a while now ;D- Same day, same lens.
This is the lighting operator, very professional and kind fellow. It does treat stage lights diligently but with taste. This portrait takes me to the memories of big classic paintings
-
I am not in favor too and I don’t use 28 mm for portraits due to distortion but this lens don’t look like 28mm to my eyes , did you used correction?
-
No, i didn't but it was shot with the Z6 and developed in LR so it may have been corrected without my input? Of course the closer you get the more pronounced distortion and here has a more 35ish look, I think
-
When the face is kept small in the frame using a 28mm, it is effectively being imaged with a perspective as if from a longer lens. Like shooting a portrait on m4/3 with a 28mm lens.
-
The explorer
-
Very inspirational!! You are a master in painting with light.
-
Thank you Peter, I´m overwhelmed.
I consider this images only half mine. The creators of characters, makeup, costumes and specially light designers are portraited here.
-
Paco, Paco, Paco.
It is very obvious that you know how to control light, and how to accentuate moments!
-
3 outstanding pictures Paco
-
Thank you both, you are too kind.
-
This is the very same show I saw with Frank in Dusseldorf. I found this one today by chance. I like the odd story telling and lecture with the clear lines and distant echo.
I guess today I commenting my own image ;D

Growing from the dark.
This fella looks like it had a not very linear life. Interesting. He made it to the light.
-
Thank you Bent.

splendid and the scene is perfectly framed, yes the 28mm 1.4 E works in so many ways! Perfect for environmental portraits and all story telling as well.
Only detail, is the bright light on the knee area mid right, kind of catches the eye but you end up looking at a knee :o ;D Of course not possible to move, but possible to pp it - Just me being nit picking
-
Thank you Erik. Your nit picking is very appreciated :) I didn't notice until you point it out.
That 28mm 1.4E is outstanding, even if I don't use it much. Serendipity, it is in my bag today.

Thanks Bent. This place has a kind of light very close in feeling of that of a stage. We had some fun time there :)

Z6, 50mm 1.8s
Right figure for the right place. Given her fantastic presence as performer, I might want to try even a bit wider viewangle in order to enhance the spotlight effect.
-
There is not much more negative space left but if I can, I'll give it a try. Thanks a lot h your the suggestion.
-
Hopefully the multi-pattern meter chose to work as center-weighted one.
-
I surprised myself :)

Today simplicity felt like the best approach.
